How can illegal people get licences, I’m genuinely curious.

My licence took 4 months to get,I got a Garda friend to check and he said vetting is really strict, do they turn a blind d eye to these people? If so that’s putting everyone safety at jeopardy!!
@ GB, when you recently got your license where you asked fer your Irish work visa or proof of your citizenship ?

The story that broke earlier in the year when a lot of Bogus taxies got found out was because they were here on either holidays visas or student visas and did not have a work visa fer Eire, but in order to get a Taxi licence here you DO NOT NEED TO SHOW A WORK VISA !
And also if'n you are joining a base or an App company, they will not require to see your Irish work visa.

I'm puzzled why anyone would want to come into an industry that is already grossly over subscribed with taxis

You're the last man I'd expect to be puzzled.

As a Trade Unionist do you not support NPHTA's Jim Waldron in calling for the cost of entry to be lowered to replace the 21,000 drivers he suggests left to pursue more lucrative careers/vocations ( https://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/taxi-driver-numbers-fall-by-400-in-2017-465438.html )?

As a Free Now advocate do you not support it's recruitment policy, in particular the incentives it offers prospective (illegal) (immigrant) drivers?

I wonder how strict the garda vetting is. do the potential drivers have to have convictions, driving or otherwise to be deemed unsuitable to drive a taxi. what if there is a dodgy character who is into drug dealing, stealing, gangs etc and the gardai know hes at it but has a clean record, will this kind of person be granted a licence do you think?

I had to get a tax clearance certificate, a report from the NDLS so show my driving history.
It did state I read somewhere that you must not have any convictions and the Garda have the final say if suitable.
So if the Garda know your ropey they can revoke the licence

As far as I remember it did ask in that section, but I will grab a psv15 form and check later.

I think a lot of you guys should wear tinfoil hats lol

A good investigative reporter would get to the bottom of it.....but they're too busy doin stories on the drugs turf war and making up names like the Gucci Gang etc....that's what the public want to read about....not some on the run sub saharan who has a dodgy irish taxi licence!!

That's the publicity that fuelled the influx of so called sham marriages. I think 2 out of 180 were deported, a little over 1% hence with a 99% success rate it's now widely recognised as an almost foolproof way of circumventing immigration regulations.
