Hard to go back to taking orders, Dalyer. It gets even harder when the person issuing them is incompetent, in their 20's, and asks you who your favourite One Direction member is.

Dalymount if you can get a job you like the wages dont matter drive at the weekends keep the car as your pension .You read about the boom but look at the boom jobs ,most of them are in the service industry low paid .restaurant ,shop ,call center ,taxi driving .If your over 40 hard to get a good job unless you know somebody .I was talking to somebody I know working for Ladbrokes said only ten of their shops in Ireland cover their running costs but they have to stay open as they have iron clad leases and they cant get out of them. There wont be driverless cars in our lifetime Dollyer just find a balance between road, rank and radio/app to get what you need out of this industry while you are in it and dont worry about what happens after you and me are gone .Trump is setting up the endgame for trade wars and real war a lot of job losses and economic downturs just around the corner .This industry does ok in recession less people able to afford to drive but still need transport .

The plus side of cashless is that there'll be any amount of jobs going in the delivery sector when payments have to made electronically into accounts. Half the take-aways will be recruiting drivers not on the scratcher.. Nephew does very well on Fri and Sat nights out of it on his Suzuki Burgman.

I'm not convinced this double jobber thing is viable lads.I've two years left on me taxi licence and I really don't see great value in reinvesting my money to earn a monkey a week.(that's all I need to make)How can the double-jobbing gobshites make it worthwhile? The tax write-offs aren't worth the hassle of keeping a taxi on the road.Either drive the cab or don't.

I think a lot of lads who go back to work probably miss the company .Sitting in a taxi talking shit to every customer can be sole destroying .Im 57 if I could get a job I liked I would probably take it .You need a car to get to work anyway so taxi insurance is the only extra cost of holding on to the taxi plus its insurance against future unemployment .

Honestly, you can buy an old banger or motorbike for small money.Keeping a sub ten-year-old taxi motor is an expensive hobby.

The only thing stopping me would be the loss of my taxi No claims bonus. If the insurance was 8000 to buy back in I'd just choose not to bother me hole ever coming back.

Most of us grew up with Ireland in the EEC /common market /EU .getting subsidies all that has changed .The EU is failing probably wont fall apart but will have two choices slow down or boom any boom will be at the cost of real wages everybody will be on minimum wage .I always recon if you want to know the future look at the USA now .Two jobs ,paid for health care and pensions medicare drugging you into oblivion .Did you know there are no pubs in Ballymun but 9 chemists .More chemists in clondalkin than pubs .

Because they're hungry cunts and use it as a social outlet like many of the OAPs in the fleet. Also you can still find some cash work which helps.

Phooey most of us dont look after our heads if your not happy in your head it leads to all other sorts of problems .Driving can be very insular Good friend of my father had a break down years ago .He drove a truck and because of the drink driving laws he was afraid to go for a pint in case he would be over the limit the next day he lost contact with his mates couldnt cope .

Slightly related but there's an old taxi man living in my area and I'd say he's at least in his late 70s or 80s.In the past year I've seen him go through two clearly red lights and on another occasion went mental at me as he thought he still had a green light and I was breaking my light.Never seen him ever with any glasses.

He's clearly bollixed and is probably gonna kill someone but I'll bet everyone keeps telling him how amazing it is that he's still working.Sooner or later something bad is gonna happen that will have us all doing a medical to drive our taxis. If I ever get that bad I hope someone will put me down.

Never did like Dr Who with them silly robots saying "exterminate" , bored the fcuk out of me.

Little did I think back in the 70's/80's that they would eventually take over our lives

Robots will do most of the work .The big problem people have now is Rent finding somewhere to live somebody to mind kids a job with decent wages and its not just Ireland .After WW1 britain was broke so they introduced death duty that cost the wealthy half their fortune but the wealthy are back buying up every available home to rent out .New Strumpet City people living in rented accomodation on low non fixed work contracts .Even the lockout where workers refused to hand over some of their pay so they could work is flourishing with agencies taking a portion of workers wages .As I posted here people born in the 50s60s 70s are the luckiest generation ever born

Phooey, I suppose with all the other kids wanting to be in IT etc etc and not wanting to get there hands dirty,  it probably makes sense that he wants to pursue this career path, and also the nixer's can be a nice little earner on the side (all above board & declared to the revenue off course)

Dont think it matters what you start out doing its what you end up doing .I started out as a metal fabricator ended up shop fitting then this .None of my kids are working at what they studied in college .Girls making huge coin doing nails, hair, eyebrows while graduates are answering phones selling you Sky packages .Lad in the house over the weekend got a tattoo sleeve cost him over two grand .If I told my old man I wanted to be a tattoo artist I would of gotten a kick in the arse .Work is changing and the gig economy is the future full time low paid job with part time gig .There is a local window cleaner he got a full time job but still does the windows on Saturday .
