If MyTaxi did kill the taxi, MT would have no business?
We'd get by with street hails if there was no MT but MT wouldn't last long if there was no taxis.

If MyTaxi did kill the taxi, MT would have no business?
We'd get by with street hails if there was no MT but MT wouldn't last long if there was no taxis.
It'd just use "limousines" or the new new rural hackneys.... no shortage of immigrants joining the ranks, they'd follow the money. "We" gave mytaxi our work, they can do what they want with it.

At one stage, MT claimed to have 4,000 taxis using the app - doubt there's that many limo's/hacks driving around.
Plus, we can use the bus lanes - big advantage.

The fleet will adapt, WD. They already dispatch clapped out shiteboxes masquerading as limousines to cover taxi fares. If we didn't do whatever work they still let us have it would merely strengthen their arguments in favour of P2P rideshare. In essence we would be signing our own death warrants.

At the moment DM the Drivers hold the balance of power, we take what we want from MyTaxi and leave what we dislike.
That situation may change if they introduce P2P Rideshare or even Autonomous vehicles OR if the Sun burns out OR if the Oil runs out !
But fer Right now, we are kinda OK !

Hailo arrived on our shores in 2012. It was billed as a simple app that allowed you to book a taxi using your smartphone and pay using your bank card. It was convenient for passengers and attractive to taxi drivers because it brought them more fares.
It caught on quickly and by 2014 it was boasting a nationwide presence and claiming that Ireland was the first country in which it had reached this milestone. The following year it expanded its reach in Ireland even further by signing up Hackney cab drivers outside of Dublin.
The following year (2015) it merged (H'mm !, Rescued would be a better phrase) with its rival, Mytaxi (INCORRECT, IT WAS IN 2017) – owned by German car giant Daimler – to become “Europe’s largest e-hailing company with 100,000 divers in 50 cities in nine countries.”
By 2017, one-fifth of the Irish population had its app installed on their phones and Mytaxi could be safely said to own the taxi market in Ireland.
Then in September that year came a (NTA approved) €2 booking fee which did not go down well and and last week saw the introduction of a €5 cancellation fee, (Mainly because of the Drunks cancelling during peak times at the weekend).
So, in a few short years we have gone from a position where taxis in Ireland were free to book (Still are !) (it was called standing on the street with your hand out) and free to cancel (it was called walking away) (Still is on a Street hail or a local dispatch job) to a situation where we have one dominant player that is in a position to charge customers for both these functions.
It’s worth noting that taxi fares – which are regulated and, in theory at least, reflect the vicissitudes of the business – have not come down. Drivers also continue to pay Mytaxi a commission on every fare.
Nothing comes down in price these days, just like the journalists wages, I doubt he will get a reduction in pay fer such shoddy work !

Yer man makes some valid points, many of us became glorified expensive hacks or maybe budget limos..
But just like the driver Ambassador program customers are beginning to realise that they're being ranked against other customers by how much they spend and what account type the have and may not be always be favoured by the algorithms when they need a taxi.Having a computer program rather than a human decide if yer a bollix or not probably bothers more people than it should.

We are all different DM, in your part of Dooblin seemingly there is plenty of street work and you don't need a dispatcher or an App. In my city 'Cork', things are different, the streets are Dry the vast majority of the time and the ranks are full, so I do need an App to make my weekly wages. I wish I was as fortunate as you to be able to live off the Street's alone, but that is not the case in Cork or more or less anywhere else, you should be Thanking your Lucky Stars fer getting such a lucrative area to work in.

Do you not get what im saying Ken ? The reason the streets are dry ,and the ranks are full ,is because most of the drivers are aligned.obviously if drivers were NOT aligned,then the work would return to the streets in bucket loads.no more commision,and a level playing field for all

The substance of the article is pretty accurate, I guess. Drivers are paying up to four times the freight charged by Irish dispatch firms. The firm certainly promotes part-time operation with part-timers being heavily subsidised by their full-time colleagues/competitors and it promotes muliticulturisation being open to drivers of all nationalities. Obviously whether those policies are good or bad for the trade is subjective. As far as riders are concerned most dispatch firms charge no contact fees on corporate accounts. Traditionally, many charged interest as well. mytaxi was, notably, the last dispatch firm to abolish discounts introduced during the last recession.
