Talking to two taxi drivers from the Uk .Both are paying £2000or near enough for TAXI insurance they say private hire are paying about £700 .they have two ncts and two suitabilities a year and drivers must do a medical .
-
Not much difference then.We usually copy something seen in another country and adapt it a little.Do they have ten year rules?

I think its 8 but there is real enforcement a lot of regulators handing out fines for everything from parking off rank or dirty cars and working outside your licenced area carries a fine and if you are caught regulary you lose your permit .Lad said he has to pay to pick up or drop off at airport and if he works his local train station has to pay to rank needs a permit and a pre paid card to swipe to pay .
-
We were like that during the bad years.Drivers walking up and down ranks checking each others discs like cunts.
I don't think it's more regulations and inspections we need, I meet the NTA enforcers a lot and one or two are complete pricks. We don't need more harassment.
I believe it's much easier to be a taxi driver outside of London than it is to be one in Dublin. So we're better off I reckon thanks to the geography test.
-
I think the realproblemin the industry is ametureism .In other juristrictions alldrivers are full time they cater for a lot of personal passengers and work fixed shifts .InDublin some drivers like myself and others on here only work when we want .I would prefer to have a Rat gnaw me bollox than try work peak time traffic AM or PM to risky for insurance with the amount of bikes on the road ,hit one and your insurance will force you off the road .Trinity to Sandymount in the morning is like the Tour de France Peloton .
-
You'd work if you had to.We all know we will be back working full time when things slow down. There was more than enough full-timers 6/7 years ago.I have jocks longer than that.

John we are self employed and as such we can choose when to work , if you want to have some Rat gnaw the bollx of you go back into the PAYE sector.

Erm at €4500 (before fuel) a year to keep and insure a cheap taxi you've got to keep working anyway. That's alright now but in 5 years when the Fluence is due for changing we could be back to a tenner an hour.Where yea gonna get the money for the next heap?
Currently €4500 a year is your first two months earnings every year after deductions at a monkey a week. Not to be joked about..

Slow down could be quicker than you think .Election today in GB resignationtomorrow Borris or Grove in three months then shit and extractor interaction could lead anywhere .Just this week alone in GB 70,000 British steel jobs gone over 10,000 retail jobs gone Ford are firing 5000 landrover moving all togeather .A lot of Brit owned business in Ireland will go fewre tourists increased prices if Brits go WTO .The last little slow down might be remembered as the good old days .I know the Girl who Manages Top shop she just bought her first home two months ago now she is going to lose her job .If the Orangutang in the USA keeps the ban on American companies doing business with China Intel and some of the chip makers will knock production back .Last time we bailed out the banks next ime we cant borrow so our pensions and savings could be bailed in like they did in Cypress .You might have to work full time for less Merc!

We all sound like survivor's here, were old enough and have been thru the shit before, nice thing(if you can call it that) is that we do have the tools to work longer if necessary.
If you go looking for work you will always find it.

Trow in fuel and maintainance I recon my costs on my present earnings are about 40% .so that leaves me with 60% 12%commission on 100% of earnings is in reality 20% of the 60% after costs so it only makes sence for me to work when there is plenty of street hails available .

Was lucky enough to get an apprenticeship but i finished in 84/85...and went into the glamorous world of male prostitution motorcycle courier....which i enjoyed and gave me a taste of self employment....which i've been ever since....all i need now is a GoFundMe page and raise 30k to finish me mortgage.....i mean asking 30,000 people to donate €1 each.....
