Sir, – I believe free speech is dead and buried in this country.
I am a Dublin-based taxi driver, and as such I hear a lot of comments and opinions expressed by my customers in relation to various topics.
I have learned through my own experience never to engage in such conversation, as it can be detrimental.
I would like to give you some examples of why I hold this view.
While listening to a conversation regarding the gay marriage proposal, I was utterly frowned upon for expressing the view that I would be voting against it.
I expressed a similar view point that I would vote against the abortion referendum, and was ridiculed for having done so.
Regarding the Brexit debate, at the absolute insistence of my customer, I dared to share my thoughts with her, and declared I was a strong Brexit supporter.
This lady, having literally thrown the fare at me, and abusing me by calling me every name she could think of , left my car in an extreme rage. She then stood outside the car, and proceeded to perform Nazi salutes towards me. lol
I had informed this customer twice, prior to her insistence, that I do not talk about politics or religion. – Yours, etc,

I've broken the cardinal rules myself a handful of times, one being always agree with what ever dirt is coming out of their mouths. A had a yungwan giving it the old conor mcgregor is brilliant is'nt he one night. He is in his Brenda, and it went from there. she slapped me from behind and bent my glasses.

Fair play Dalyer. Had a few of those areswipes over the yrs too. Best to psych them out and repeat back what they say to you though, The Nazi salute was stolen form the Romans so don't be worrying....as was the eagle on the cap. A T-Shirt with the slogan "I used to ride fellows like you in prison" is my choice of expression when they get uppity.

What some don't realise is we're only there to turn the steering wheel and collect the money.If you keep any unconventional thoughts in your head best keep the mouth shut.Yeah I do talk about daft stuff in the car but I know how not to be offensive about it.Being able to express a daft opinion about something and not offend the gimps in the back takes practice.If ya can't do it stay silent or be agreeable when transporting drunks and Coke heads.

Best bet is to agree with the passengers or keep your mouth shut!
I used to get into arguments with religious nutjobs before I learned my lesson. At the end of the journey, they'd get out and promise to pray for my soul.

Probably Bob S...I'm fairly sure the taxi Bible tells us to steer clear from conversations about politics or religion somewhere.Just makes for an easy life on the car.

Hate when they ask " Who do you support?"
I usually reply " No one, I grew out of it in my late teens".
