Parked at the end of a long queue of taxis that spill over into the adjacent lane near St Stephen’s Green, taxi driver Adidemi Lugboso (51) says there is one glaring problem he faces as a cab driver in the city.
“There’s too many taxis,” he says. “There’s as many taxis here as New York.”
Several taxi drivers who spoke to The Irish Times said the number of cabs on the street can be overwhelming and oversight was not enough to regulate unlicensed drivers.
“Nobody’s listening,” says David Heavey (57), waiting for a fare outside Dublin Castle. “If you report someone you never hear back.”
“It just goes flying around in the cloud,” agreed Sean (53), who declined to give his last name. “Nobody ever acts on it. The punishment doesn’t fit the crime.”
Waiting in line outside the Westbury Hotel on Grafton Street, he says he couldn’t remember the last time the enforcement team came to him to check on his details.
Week nights
He maintains that customers focus too much on Friday and Saturday night when taxis are in high demand, but don’t care about the rest of the time when the streets are flooded with cabs.
“Where are you on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, you know?” he says.
The DriverCheck app allows users to enter the number located on the side of the taxi and compare the photo and name to the person driving the car. If no information comes up, the driver is probably not licensed. The problem, according to the drivers, is there is little enforcement.
Pulling on a cigarette next to his taxi parked in the line along the quays, Seán Nolan (44) agrees with the claim of a lack of oversight and response to illegal taxi drivers.
Checking on drivers
“We can’t complain,” he says. “If we find a taxi on the rank that is illegitimate, or not on the driver check, we can’t report them. It has to be a customer [who reports them]. What use is that because not all customers will check the system to see if that driver is legit.”
Nolan, like many other drivers, does not see the introduction of Uber as contributing to their problems. Unlike in many other countries, Uber drivers in Ireland must be licensed in the same way as taxi drivers.
“That’s about the one good oversight that government does have on a taxi,” says Nolan. “That Uber can’t come into the country and just send anybody. I had to be vetted. Every man here had to be vetted. Uber can’t vet the way our police force can vet.”

Sales by taxi .You need to see how this works .George,Joe or some other waster of a Radio presenter goes on a taxi rant he knows that taxi drivers will tune in advantage for the radio station is passengers get to listen to their presenter in the taxi and might then tune their radio to that station .Newspapers do the same thing big spread about any taxi issue as they know big mouthed taxi drivers will rant .Did you read this or did you read that in the Daily Bugle or whatever chip wrapping it appears in .Nobody gives a fuck about some knobhead driving a taxi .Just be there when they want you go the shortest way and stop fucking moaning is all they want .

I bought a 4and a half year old part worn 70k on the clock if i get 3 years care free motoring then one or two more i will be delighted .Dont look beyond a 3 year time frame .The new buzz word is Climate Change TAX If any party needs the Greens to put them in power you dont know what stupidity concerning traffic might become law .Goalposts seem to be moving under their own momentuim .If I was in my 30s I would be looking for a PAYE job and taxi part time .40k for a car to compete with a 3k shitebox for the same work?

I know a couple of auflas who are in to the 40k grand motors and the reason why is because they just live in their cars.
they could buy 100k cars and it would'nt impact them to fuck because that's all they do, drive their taxis 7 days a week, 14 hours a day.

It's mad that they love the money more than anything else.I have my current yoke 6 years and other lads in town are on their third car since I bought mine.At some point they must realise they're just working to keep a new number on the reg plate.The tax write off isn't enough to keep changing.

That's a good days wages after expenses for someone.Might be easy to get now but when the inevitable happens we'll be back to discounting and screwing each other over and dropping the PUC.Our wages will reduce but the expenses will stay the same.
Anyway if/when I change my car I won't break even until I earn at least 9000 a year.The bloke in the new Camry needs at least 11000 to break even assuming he can keep it for ten years.It all adds up to more hours.Lets hope none of us get sick.

Not sure about that one but a decent Saturday would see a good part-timer being set up for his couple of hours on a Tues and Wed. If you can't make your weekly costs on a Fri night-Sat night.........you're too busy on this forum.

We'r did half of Ireland go in the last recession wen everybody emigrated from ther borehole kip? I recently mention that I'm experimenting wit day work because my earnings are down big time.....Ide say the ammount of taxis in Dublin at night has doubled in the past year and I've felt it in me pocket enormously.... I've accepted already that this job is already fucked
