Mytaxi had a budget of 3 million quid to rebrand to Free now and ambassadors are still giving free advertising away..Saw a fully wrapped Luas earlier with the new Freenow graphics..Do yis think the people that run the Luas did it for free too?
Also they say they've pitched their taxi match service to the DAA.Trouble ahead.

Do any of you remember the fella on Roys who warned about this .I remember him warning about fleets of WATs being run by individuals ..AH well the weather is nice .
-
Who are ya taking about owning fleets of WATS?Renters are only buying them because they can avail of grants and the plates are free.

When I said that would happen Roy told me I was a fucking idiot that it would not happen .We should of ran for the council and took the lead on environmental issues and tried to limit numbers by increasing standards .I asked for an environmental impact statement .The Greens just make the shit up to suit tneir political agenda .
-
Who owns fleets of WATs that are a problem. We need more wheelchair vehicles, if a few renters buy them fair enough. The only reason the renters are busy is because new drivers can't get a cheap policy in their own name.
I met a renter in the pub last weekend and he thought it was hilarious that the NTA were subsiding his WAT purchases. He's still paying 30k a vehicle after the grant so doesn't make a profit for 3 years.Hardly worth bothering IMO.

If the Dispatchers who cover HSE jobs can convince the HSE that they will provide WAVs only to service that contract and possible even offer to train the drivers in wheelchair handling which always amazed me there was no such requirement .Changes dont happen over night you need to have all your ducks in a row before you propose the policy .In my submission to the review I proposed all taxies should be WATs but the saving grace is that electric WAVs are not available AT THE MOMENT .
-
I dunno what exactly you're worried about. They're already offerings incentives to pass the taxis test.If they can take on enough drivers to rent their vehicles they'll be happy.
Just think of loads of hungry fuks working around the clock to pay the rent.It will be just like old times.
-
Why why why for fukk sake do you give dispatchers a major say in the running of our industry FUKK THEM OUT.for Christ's sake are you EVER going to cop on and take back control of your industry ? YOU DONT NEED THESE PEOPLE.can you not see they are not essential to the taxi industry, yet you continue to grovel to the likes of Kearns ,Kelly, and Ebbs. What kind of fukkin people are you ?
-
Daly there are drivers in the fleet who never ranked up in their 15 year taxi career.I know them. They don't hate the despatchers because they know no any different.Fellas who would go home if their phone failed or app stopped working.
Most of us are on the apps now.Even posters who used to do without are now relying on it for the majority of their work. There's no going back.I work the ranks a bit and most lads are over 50 and could barely use a sat nav nevermind a smartphone. So it will be the younger lads embracing the apps that will probably do us in.
-
MFH I know what your saying, and I said I have much more time for the likes of mytaxi who dont treat drivers like employees.however I have always maintained there would STILL be the same amount of work available wether you have dispatchers or not.people are not going to stop using taxis just because they now have to come out to the street to hail one, rather then sitting on their arses waiting for it to arrive.infact by coming out to the street ,they are getting a taxi in real time rather then waiting on a promise of it arriving in 20 mins according to the app.also suddenly the driver cancels because he picks up a better fare on the way.believe me you will all regret in the event of time that you gave these basyards control of our industry.mark my words
-
The apps are run by ex radio company guys. The main recruiter in Freenow is a former Ebbs employee and I believe he worked with Xpert at some point.
The main difference between the two is app jobs are pay per job and the radio companies take a weekly set fee plus a percentage of account work.

Well I think the main difference is one treats you with dignity while the other thinks you work for him

Don't rank a whole lot myself MfH but funnily enough I was in early yesterday (Tue) so decided to make a new rank for the lads on Blunden Drive... anywaysanall, there I am minding my own business reading me buke and out of nowhere a bloke arrives at me winda wearing a taxi regulator costume and asks if I wouldn't mind swapping places with him - his car, that is, which he had parked in front of me - as he was setting up a checkpoint. No bodder says I, had a look in my rearview mirror and it was like marshall law or something... Gardai on bikes, in cars, in jeeps, carrying guns and all... after switching places me nerves were rightly fucked so I got out and asked if he needed to check me... I've done that, all in order says he... grand, says I, I'll move on and get out of your way altogether.
-
Good to see a bit of enforcement of the law, the vast majority of us pay huge insurance premiums + all the Taxi test costs, while there is still a few rogues out there in direct competition with us that pay none of these costs.
-
Well I think the main difference is one treats you with dignity while the other thinks you work for him
Both control you. We're all someone's bitch.........knowing it is another matter altogether.
-
Maybe, Ken... but he didn't ask why I was parked where I was parked which wasn't an official stand and isn't an established unofficial stand - yet! I guess he realised the futility of such an enquiry.
Bit heavy handed, in any event. Has the orangeman brought in a shoot to kill policy to deal with road tax / licence fee dodgers or what?
-
Assuming he hasn't got X-ray vision he didn't check my safety equipment either, Ken... nor did he notice / comment on my dashboard ID lying flat on the dash or the passenger information sticker on the sun visor being peeled to the extent of being illegible.
-
OMG Rat you got away lightly, were there any Donut's involved ?
-
No donuts but I am Irish by accident of birth... anecdotal evidence suggests they are far more thorough with our immigrant colleagues/competitors.
-
OMG Rat []
Oh... and bless you, my child.

What im amazed at is how you could park on blundon drive ?there is only one entertainment spot there and I doubt that would have been open at the time you were there.I remember about 5 years ago one Saturday night driving down blundon drive .suddenly my whole windscreen shattered.it transpired a few little scumbags regularly hurl stones over the wall from one of the back gardens.I went to the coolock Garda station at the time, and a female Gardatold me this is a regular occorance from that place

A good friend of mine Trevor Williamson who was most likely my best friend at 8 years old and we got up to some serious mischief together at that young age, we parted company a few years later as my family moved house Circa 1973..
Years on (30) later in the Taxi game we met up again, his exuberant lifestyle as a Taxi driver was so unexplanable, he had a Wedding that put Princess Di in her place. He was going to College by night, working the Day shift as a Taxi, sinking pints all afternoon, and putting the Kids through Private school, his Misses did not work, All this was not adding up fer me !

Ken my mate is a C O with the Garda fraud squad.his job is to look at bank accounts that dont fit the job the person is doing.in circumstances where there is suspicion about a particular bank account, and the amount of money passing through it,he has to inform his colleagues in the fraud squad,if he suspects anything.he told me seriously a huge amount of these accounts are taxi drivers, and most of them are foreigners
-
If you google that name, a taxi driver called Trevor Williamson was a very naughty boy back in 2012/2013. Don't know if it's the same guy.

Where I parked - the lay-by behind the bus stop, at the church gate - is away from the gardens although I wouldn't have thought Slademore was that rough. Dunno why I first pulled in there, to be honest... just seemed like a good idea to have a rest and a read instead of suffering daytime traffic I think. However, I've used the spot a few times now and got away quickly enough on the app (Free Now) including a couple of decent enough jobs.
To be pedantic, there's two entertainment spots - the GAA club and the Community Centre... I think both use Free Now to summon taxis. I'm not sure if they're subject to hospitality surcharges on freight but I wouldn't accept a job from either (or any other bar/hotel/car hire return shed) from the app regardless.

I think its the same story with the new baths in clontarf services by free now.sure its no wonder poor fykks like me cannot get any work

Ken is complaining he has to much work,im complaining I cant get enough

Nice bit of detective work Watty, if it's the same guy. Would explain a lot

Yea, that's him Watty, the point I was making was about Ratcatcher's heavy handed story.
I remember meeting Trevor in circa 2011 and him telling me the story of how he was stopped by Taxi regulators on a city street in Cork, I remember his words, he said; "they were like the Gestapo the way they treated me", and a short few years later I found out exactly why the Taxi regulators had treated him like the Gestapo, they knew full well what he was up to.

I would imagine as per my previous post, they had bigger Fish to Fry that day ?

Helluva difference between being in gear and being into gear.

When I lived up above in Dublin Slademore was a quiet enough area. Blunden drive probably less so given it's proximity to Darndale and various (official and unofficial) halting sites. Given DMs experience and the comments he got from An Garda Siochana the entire area has obviously got rougher over the years, probably as some of the council built housing schemes settled and quietened doewn a bit. Maybe that's why the orangeman sends his troops out equipped for war when they're checking tax discs. Still, it must be terrifying for law abiding citizens (as the vast majority of the population are) passing through these checkpoints... and a reminder of what they can expect at their front door if they miss a mortgage payment. Larry O'Toole ought to up in arms... not literally... or maybe literally.
-
The wall I had to scale backing on to Blunden was in Slademore.........her husband was a serious heavy and I was a youngfella....1991

OK so a Auld one seduced you were you were a youngfella, nice one

There used to be a green behind a bit of the wall but I think it's all built up now so missiles would have to be coming from private property. Certainly during the 80s Slademore wasn't rough, nor was Ayrfield but I was reading recently about gangs from Ayrfied and Edenmore involved in local feuding. In my day the Ayrfield lads were soft as butter, they wouldn't have stood a chance against the headbangers from Edenmore. There was a (mildly) rough bit at the top of Ayrfield Drive (Newtown I think it's called) but that backs onto Slademore and the Malahide Rd, not directly on to Blunden Drive.
-
Can't recall any green but the wall was a serious drop out onto the street behind....proceeded left and on the right hammer was that kip of a nightclub....The Camelot.
-
It's a big wall alright.. probably necessarily so given the number of travellers close to the other side of it. If going round the front of the house was an option you coulda gone through the church car park. I don't think there was even a gate on the pedestrian entrance onto Blunden Drive back then.
-
Out the front door meant a huge fight or a sword.....I chose wisely.....on me Sweeney, and also drinking heavily previous day.....blood pressure even in a young man shoots up to stroke level after a feed of drink....scrapping is not an option.
-
Passed by my spot on Blundon Drive yesterday afternoon and one of my colleagues/competitors was using it. Great minds think alike or did he read it here first?
-
Oh, I did get a walk up from it last evening, too. I was a bit tired and kinda lost interest in work so I was just parked there reading and munching on the most enormous bag of dry roasted peanuts known to man while completely ignoring job after job from Free Now. The lad that got in suggested it was a good spot as loads walk through the church car park to find taxis. Not sure myself, that's the only walk up I've had in the short time I've used the spot and I was only still there 'cos I ignored the app but it could make sense I guess.

Some amount of members/perusers, yet so few contributors.....anything's possible.
