There's a lot of truth in that. It's human nature to 'puff' yourself up, esp if you're poor, by **thinking** you're better than the next guy. It's also part of the social contract that we generally don't say these things out loud so we can all live in crowded cities and don't kill each other.

To use a taxi analogy... We all get passengers who start by saying, 'I'm not racist but...'. Most of us taxi drivers just nod and agree with them to avoid arguments.
