Title: Brexit driving
Post by: john m on August 06, 2019, 10:16:22 am
Just wondering if Brexit happens then new cars imported into GB will have to pay WTO taxes that will make Right Hand Drive cars more expensive so they will sell less .If the car makers are selling less Right Hand Drive cars will they increase the price of them to justify the trouble of making them or will one of the side effects of less cars being sold in the UK mean there will be plenty of special offers next year to get rid of the cars that wont be bought in Britain .

If there was ever a United Ireland might we then decide to drive on the Left as left hand drive cars are more popular so should be cheaper .

Donnie Cassidy suggested a number of years ago we should start driving on the right to facilitate the number of foreigners that were here now. I think he was serious

if the brits were out of the north then it would be up to us .We only really drive on the wrong side because we share the island with the Brits .Right hand drive cars seem tyo be more expensive .

I was told years ago that the charging of VRT on imported cars is completely illegal. But because they are making so much money from it, they just ignore the EU directive and pay the annual fine. I don't know if that's true or not

If they can bring a secondhand Prius all the way from Japan and make a profit they'll figure it out.

In fact the same import duties might apply.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_with_left-hand_traffic
There's 75 countries that drive on the left hand side.  The car companies will still have plenty of places to sell them.

British cars generally have better specs than ours.  Maybe the car makers will just downgrade the Brit cars to poverty-spec like we get to make them cheaper?

If the EU did really clamp down on the illegal charging of VRT....I can guarantee by the time the court rules the Irish govt will have a gear selector tax ready to go....if the fine that they're currently paying matched the revenue generated from VRT...then something might give but I'm sure they have a backup ready to go.

No you are paying for the number plate .I remember reading an article years ago and somebody asked why we dont do like the Brits and sell personal number plates and put that money into road safety and the reply was that as we charge the VRT to register the vehicle and then issue that car with a plate that a once off personal plate would be transferable and lead to loss of revenue .So the states logic is VRT is to register the vehicle so is not really a tax but a registration fee.

It's pointless complaining about it.As soon as it gets taken away they'll put 500 on the yearly car tax or a euro on the fuel.Them revenue lads would also run rings around the Paddy power gimps.Seamless..

True John....but not playing the game as the EU intended...the only thing that seems to move freely through borders are people....which the UK citizens voted to stop!!

United Ireland or not, when Brexit happens, within 5 years we will be driving on the right hand side of the road.
It’ll make us more European

When brexit happens it could be the beginning of the end for the EU and the status quo will be maintained. Hopefully anyway
