Ireland will join an international campaign for a four-day working week today.
The '4-Day Week Ireland' group is the homegrown leg of an international coalition of unions, business, environmental and women's groups who are promoting the benefits of a shorter working week.
It follows the British Labour Party's recent commitment to campaign to reduce the working week to four days.
Among those addressing the campaign launch in Dublin is Andrew Barnes, founder of New Zealand financial advice company Perpetual Guardian, which rolled out a four-day week for its 250 staff last year. They work four eight-hour days but get paid for five. Galway firm ICE has also introduced a four-day week.
Labour spokesperson on employment and social protection Ged Nash called for an expert group on extending a shorter working week here.
The senator said workers are being made to feel like they are expected to be constantly available to their employer due to new technologies.
"We have to look again at our working time laws and how we can ensure working people work to live, rather than merely live to work," he said.

Cut the working week to 4 day , then surely you must cut the Pay to 4/5ths of your original salary, would mean less disposable income !!
-
I think der is not enough hours in the day.
Should increase the day from 24 to 36 hours

4 pints instead of 5 when you go out !

4 pints instead of 5 when you go out !
Wouldn’t be worth your while going out for 4 pints

Classic hits on about the 4 day week now
-
If everybody did 2 day week then they'd all have half the money's that they wud if everybody did a four day week which wud mean that the prices for everything wud have to be reduced by half so it wud all even out in the end ...and people wud have alot more time to spend ther money and so stimulate the economy and weed all be better off.....
-
But Octy...we could say we're only working two days but work four...prices would drop and we'd be brazillianaires!!
-
More double jobbers >:( >:(
-
I think what's proposed is to work 10 hours a day for 4 days, rather then 8 hours a day for 5 days,so no shortening of the hours worked just a change to when you work them

Talking about companies wanting their employees to be more alert, and more productive isn't it strange that their rep organization IBEC never called on the government to outlaw double jobbing considering the employee is bound to be fatigued having worked at ( say ) taxi driving the weekend, and cannot produce his best performance. What's even stranger is that the ICTU have not sought to outlaw it either, considering a fundamental principle of the trade union movement is one man one job
-
Sure they did fukall about yer man driving the bus....two jobs driving the public around supposedly in a safe manner, the hours he drives a bus are monitored but driving a joe?

Free Now is great for double jobbers. While full time professionals that need the job to feed their families anall pay up too four times the freight they used to pay Irish dispatch firms the part-timers pay less than the equivalent of one week's freight.
