Surely it's only a matter of going out once or twice a week and starting the car for a few minutes ?

I have a battery charger but it would take ages to charge a modern diesel battery. Jump leads present a pretty much instant solution.

Iif I ever buy a new car, the first thing I'll make sure of is that it doesn't have one of those what they call a feature, where the car stops every time you stop at a traffic light or anywhere else. I just cannot see how that is labeled as being a feature

I can't imagine it would do your starting motor much good stopping and starting

They say the starter motors are made of stronger stuff these days. If you think of a starter motor as an alternator in reverse it might help. The alternator turns constantly with the engine yet they are very reliable in modern cars.

Something I've always wondered about is, if your going to buy a new car why would you go for one you have to plug in and charge when the other one charges as you drive ?

Cheaper to run and better for the environment.

The plug in hybrids will only get you 40 miles before it becomes a normal regenerative braking hybrid.....fukall use as a taxi for the extra cost involved in the purchase.

I certainly wouldn't go for the one you have to plug in I don't care if it's cheaper or not. If I did go for it, I would get one of those charging points into my house anyway

If Govt was paying for my car like it does for all the immigrants I'd have one of those Audi Etrons.

Leave battery in car and put charger on it overnight

Too much effort, easier to jump start ever 3 or 4 weeks I guess. In any event the battery shouldn't be flat after 3 weeks, sure we all went on vacation several times a year 'till the virus hit.

i feel more confident now that I splashed out on a new battery...It actually starts ...first time now!! Remember a 1.2 petrol engine needs much less energy to start ....when compaired to a 2,0 diesel engine

Maybe you understand what "stay at home" means... DM struggles with that concept for some reason.

It takes about 20-30 minutes idling to make up for the energy used to start it up.You must actually drive it to charge it properly.

I'm finding that every time I drive my car to charge the battery, I pass by the off-licence.  And it seems rude to drive by and not support local Irish business  :2cheers

They still have their plebs out there spreading the desease, and feeding off the profits of the drivers labour

Not necessarily When the battery goes flat after a couple of weeks parked up it's usually a sign that it's on the way out.
