Still a work in progress, but getting there.

The orders should be flying in next week....

Perspex shouldn’t be used. It breaks to easy and will cause you issues. Polycarbonate is the only thing to use.

This crowd just outside of Ballincollig in Cork called Blarney Trading do plastic sheeting
.
I measured my cab and it is about 1.5 meters from window to window and approx a bit less from roof to floor.
Blarney Trading sell sheets of hard plastic which measure 1.8 meters by 1.2 meters and are 2.5mm thick (which is a Tenth of an Inch or a quarter of a centimeter) and cost 55 Notes.
Yer-man-o on the phone told me that it would be perfect fer a Taxi screen and that I could drill holes into it to fit cable ties to hold it on to the headrests but warned me Not to use a Jigsaw to cut it as it could be brittle and crack if heavy machinery was used on it, he said a simple handsaw would cut it easily.

Fools and their money

If'n your interested Roy, then surely a Dooblin supplier would have the same product.
I would suggest a line of metal tubing in the drill holes to protect the plastic sheet from the cable ties that secure it to the head rest.
A line of metal tubing can easily be obtained from cutting a small piece from a Coca cola can and secured by a tiny piece of duct tape.
And a bit of sand paper to smooth off the cut plastic edges.

I might buy another sheet when hardware stores resume. i'd buy a 5mm thick one next time, experience will help make the cutting better

2mm perspex is flexible enough to mould to the back of the seat, so legroom does not need to be compromised

Im sure your engineer friend will tell you that certification of any screen would cost tens of thousands of Euro in tests and conformance certs .I posted what Paddy from Axa replied to me .I have no idea who Paddy is no second name and E mail not on headed notepaper just a reply attached to my original question .

Too much work for my liking but would deffo work, I'd be a bit concerned if Ken thinks a standard handsaw will do the trick, not a hope!

I was kinda thinking that too Roy, but that is what yer-man-o in Blarney Trading told me.
My preference would have been fer a standard Hacksaw and used easily and carefully,
and sanding off the cut edges by hand with sand paper.
Drilling to be done with the smallest possible drill bit, then widen the hole with a bigger drill bit fer the cable ties.

Am I to believe that the two most outspoken posters against drivers working intend returning at some stage without any form of protection against the virus?
They like Trump must believe it will disappear

When I choose to return, I'll have a free now screen and face masks if necessary .
But only when it's deemed safe.
I certainly won't be installing a botch.

I was wondering do the lads on the school runs get paid during the pandemic?I thought they had contracts.

Well if they do then they wint be getting the covid payment as well

Operation snots funny ..Rang somebody who said DO NOT USE PERSPECTS it will shatter use Polycarbonate .So using me old ability to forage on site I managed to get an off cut big enough to do the job for choice then I made a pattern (Renault Fluence ) Threw the lad in the factory a score for smokes .Bespoke screen supplied and fitted for a score .
-
Yis should make template for another one in case it gets the first gets damaged.
Also it might help a colleague with the same vehicle.
-
I have a template can be adjusted for any seat position .Renault Fluence if anybody needs it .
-
I was watching Car SOS last night and they made a screen for an old car, they used a heat gun and a fire extinguisher as a tool to shape the screen...thought it would be a handy tip if the polycarbonate needed to be shaped at the back of the seats.
-
Its bespoke cut to size I will compress fit it using the seats to lock it in between the back of the seat and the roof .I have double sided adhesive foam to fit to pillars with hidden cable ties .I tried to post a picture but is says file to large .

Could you please explain or post another photo ?

Be careful putting any type of adhesive on the car John M because when you go to take it off it will leave a residue which will quickly turn in to a black stain which is near impossible to shift even with WD40.

Dont see a screen as a full time fitting so its bound with pipe insulation to prevent any cutting of roof lining or seats from any movement would of preferred to use proper edging but cant get any .

I would imagine that you are similar to myself John M, A bit of a character and a joker in the cab who enjoys the banter with customers, but with a full screen up all that is gone.
The fares like the one posted below will be a distant past.
I had this fare in the cab one night, a mature bearded man of about 45, it was about 3am in the morning and he asked to go to Blackrock (Southside), along the way he spewed all the usual drunken bullshite telling me how much he loved and adored his 7 year old daughter, then he changed his mind and asked to be brought to Knocknaheeny (Northside). As we approached his destination he started to tell me of how his ex-partner (from Knocknaheeny) denied him access to his daughter and how he was now going to give her a piece of his mind and see his daughter.
I pulled in the cab on Bakers road before making the turn fer Knocknaheeny and turned on the man stating; "Look, I'm not holding you prisoner and I'm not telling you what to do, I will bring you wherever you wish to go, but I will break down the situation fer you. If you go banging on your ex-partners door at 3 in de morning 'Full of drink' then she will come out screaming or call the Guards or maybe both, your 7 year old daughter will be awoken and she will be terrified if there is a Garda presence in the middle of the night and most likely your ex-partner will use the situation to turn the child against you. In the next Ten minutes you may lose all access to your child forever. Now think about what I've said and tell me where you want to go ?"
He thought about it fer about Ten seconds and then said; "Home to Blackrock please Mr Taximan".
There was no further chat in the cab as his drunken confidence had been shattered, the fare at Blackrock was 27Euro, but I only asked fer a Score because of all the diversions, he handed me 30Euro on departing saying; "Keep it, Your a Good Man".

When Im ready to take a front seat passenger ill remove the screen .

I have very temporary screen guards up, and I manually lock the front passenger door and direct passengers to the rear seats.
However if there are 4 passengers then (as fares are in short supply) I will allow a Front seat passenger.

I'll wait!

How much ?
-
What's the "irbag", erm? If it's a bit of an airbag I'd be very careful if I were you... very very careful... in fact very very very careful wouldn't be too careful in such circumstances. Make sure you have receipts from the manufacturer and the installation engineer.

People who love to knock other peoples efforts, sad life really.

There's probably at least another month of the Covid payments and lads are going mad to put screens in their vehicles that will do next to fuk all in the real world where this virus has particles smaller than 0.125 Microns.A human hair is 75 microns. So a bit of a breeze and this thing is gonna blow around like a little balloon.
I watched a video earlier where Ford motors in the US are building HEPA grade filters for front line workers using car parts.Forward to 5 mins if yer too busy to watch it all.
https://youtu.be/OMmvZ_OYQzE
How much filtering will be done through yer headliner on the roof lads?None.
Do yis really think this virus won't go around the headrests and under the seats and into the air conditioning systems.
It's not really knocking if we're having a giggle at screens that will do sweet fuk all.Stop kidding yourselves lads. It's great that yis have a project but none of us will get a job building medical-grade filters anytime soon.Especially Ken.
Have a laugh because the screen isn't gonna do a whole lot.If you think you aren't fit enough to survive it stay at home or get another job.
It looks like all passengers will be required to wear masks in the next few months so don't put too much time into a screen.
-
As well as all that, there will be insurance modifications,NCT modifications, and suitability modifications .I would have a pain in my hike if I had to keep removing thw screen to satisfy these different tests
-

I can take mine out and put it back in again in about a minute, John's looks like it pops in and out even quicker than that.
I put it in for myself nobody else, I will definitely feel safer with it than I did without it, regardless of what passengers are doing
-
Yes but the point is,the insurance will view the fitting of this screen to be a modification to your car and,God forbid you have an accident, they will try to wriggle out of settling if that we r ti happen

I have a reply from axa saying they think its ok .Its not actually what I might call a call to arms but it is addressed to me and indemnifies ME .Its up to every man to cover his arse .I sent a request for guidance to the taxithingey on the issue .Did any of you contact the insurance or taxithingey or do you only post on here ?

Only advice I can offer is that everything has standards now, be careful what you fit to your car.

I wasn't knocking anyone's work. I think TOO was referring to the erm's criticism of his project... I didn't even know the erm made that himself, just flicked through the thread and checked the photo to make sure it wasn't plagiarised without a link.
-
I never criticized anybodies effort to protect themselves

I'm in no hurry to get back out there. As soon as the COVID 350 money disappears I'll think about it proper.I'm still on me xmas holidays.Kinda.Can't face the taxi nevermind make a screen. It's a massive pain in the hole starting the thing up to charge the batteries every couple of days.

Cant see it One .I suppose he wants us off the road for our own good ?
Saying our business is down and will be for some time and we should be compensated, also wants us to be given free screens, minister ran out of time talking about buses with his answer and will provide a written one regarding taxis
-
I've realised now the taxi is not for me after 15 years ..I was kinda delusional and fell into it by accident ..bit like the painting....I was out wit me mate painting yesterday... and I showed him wat I painted an I said " much would you give me for this " ......... " 6 months " he said

Dont know how menny you are but its never to late to do something else .Like you I fell into this few reasons business broke me financially and spiritually .Lads down the pub driving taxies always had cash on their hip so it looked like a decent job and is if your not trying to raise a young family and pay a mortgage and are the only bread winner .If your missus is on an earner then this is great you can look after the kids until she gets home then head out .After the fever and BREXIT dont think there will be a lot of work for anybody .This business will take a hit and like Merc For Hire says its an expensive game to be in .If I was you I would start painting Irish country cottages broken down family homestead type and flog them to the Yanks they will buy them and pretend thats the old homestead back in the Emerald isle .
I told you all about my mate flys Falcons .He is down the country and Americans come in to see him .He has a still and makes a drop but its never ready on the Day as he knows they wont get it through customs .So he gets their E mail address and as soon as they are back in the states he contacts them to tell them the stuff is now really mild and ready for drinking and he sells them a bottle about $50 plus posting .He says they love it and often re order .Its not that they like drinking it ,what they want it for is boasting .People dont want to see your snaps or video from your trip to IRRRRlande but you want to boast you were here ,So you offer them a drop of the old stuff from the old country .Now they know you have the coin to be able to afford to holiday in Ireland .
-
I borrowed a very large amount from the eircom CU about 6 weeks ago with a view to buying a brand .ew jammer,a.d extensive home improvement.yesterday I went in and gave it back ve ause of the uncertainty, both of the virus, and wether or not im staying in the game

Johnny ...I'm looking at an owlone on the website I started put me paintings.....shes painting flowers .....a big write up about she studied art all over the place ....
She put 2 up monday .....one was 700 ...the other 500 ......
They sold within the hour ....1200 euro for a tenner worth of material and a score postage ....now shes to pay 30 % commission but theres other sites I'm looking at and theres feck all commission...anyway....every one them she does is almost the same as the last ......here have a look yurself
.https://www.artclickireland.com/?s=Fiona+roche&post_type=product (https://www.artclickireland.com/?s=Fiona+roche&post_type=product)
....I have a theory that thers alot people cooped up in ther homes ....and are desperate to decorate and change the walls that ther staring at all day ....I tink the art is booming online cause all the galleries are closed and if I can stop bein a lazy cnut I mite make few bob ........
This taxi game I'm going treat it like an expensive hobby ...as merc said ...itl be that for a cople years again
...I reckon facebook and google and axa will all employees will be working from home in the future now that they realise they dont need to rent a building for a million a week in Barrow street or watever ....theyll go the way of uber and freenow .....facebook employees will be using thrr own electric to charge ther laptop and ther own wifi to communication ....the future is here....less and less air travel cause its fuking up the environment and not nessesity anymore with zoom and laptops .
...its time to put the thinking cap on ....I tink theres great opportunity now for parcels deliveries and online transportation of goods ...few blokes on here know all about courier busness.....ther cud be money in that now that its exploding busness....all ya need is a car...

Sensible move .New order for this game buy a six or seven year old crate that will do you .Think in no more than three year increments .To much uncertainty I know I keep going on about it but BREXIT will kill us .Boris will go for a hard fuck off Brexit he can blame the recession on the Corona .The real Brexit game is as I stated to allow the Old money the people who lost their influence after WW1 when they were the only ones with money so the government taxed it off them regain their property .They now have money and access to money @ .5% they can borrow Billions and buy up assetts for pennys on the £ .Just look at the Conservative Party how many of them are x Bankers ,Goldman Sachs ,Lehmans .The harder the Brexit the harder the recession in Britain the cheaper the assetts to hover up .You think Vulture funds had it easy here watch them go in Britain .They fooled the Poor deluded cunt who earned a few quid mining coal or working on the railways who drank in the local Workmans club listening to War stories of D day landing and Maureen Singing Well Meet Again after fourteen halves of best bitter that leaving europe was a rebirth of Britain and their jobs would all return .Britain of the 60s was heaven on earth music, fashion, freedom but that is never coming back Britain is a third world country trying to be a world leader it is in Chaos .To show the Delusion read the Football Transfer fees and wages .Sky will pull the plug on it as unemployed Malcom from Darlington and Nevil from Scunthorpe stop their subscription as their dole wont spread that far .Fucking Deluded Nation .

You're right John.....i've been saving for the last few years...have about 8k,due to change my jammer next Feb.....unless the useless fuks in the NTA decide to give everyone..not just the (less than) 800 licence holders...an extra year with their cars....but i won't be holding my breath tbh.
I was planning on another 4yr old car but i reckong it'll be a 6yr old jammer instead....or a real job!!

Keep an eye open now .A lot of those PPA cars will be returned after 3 years especially by companies that wont reopen they will flood the market probably get a 4 year old car for 5K CASH if you have it .If the Greens get into government Diesel will be the same price as petrol some of the newer petrol cars are good on the juice cheaper to maintain easier on tyres .Should be plenty of options .

Be staying hybrid...or hybird as some gobshites say....when the full effect of a struggling economy is felt...then hopefully a cheaper car might be had.

You would imagine they will hold their value especially if the Greens are in power .Fucking strange times we are under attack from Virus,Brexit and Greens and we are not even at war .More Irish people going to die from dizzeeze or their own hand in the next few years than died in WW2 .Weird World .

You forgot the NTA......about as useful as an inside pocket on a string vest.
-
To be fair, NTA have been pretty accommodating as far as taxis are concerned. They even rang me last month to see if I wanted to extend the suspension of my vehicle SPSV, you can't say fairer than that.
-
FN said they can give me an earlier date than my current booking of 15/06. Problem being, they fit the sneeze screen in Baldonnel. That's over 30KMs from Coolock in today's money, and we're restricted to 5 KMS.
I'll wait, leaving what's there to the money-hungry poxes!! 8)

How much are they charging ya for supply and fit

Do ya reckon the bullet is an ambassador like Ken ?
yes and no .Think bullett is in the same driving seat as yourself and meself health issues he had new bones fitted not willing to risk his life for chump change .
-
Do ya reckon the bullet is an ambassador like Ken ?
Dunno ... you asked him a simple question .. twice! and both times he didn't answer??
What do you reckon?

I was wondering do the lads on the school runs get paid during the pandemic?I thought they had contracts.
Yes
-
Stay at home save lives.Poor oul Ken's gonna be eating stale sambos now he's used up all the cling film in Cork.
Ken is ok dont know if he is making coin but he is minding his head
I'm happy enough with my screen, granted it looks naff and is far from perfect, bit it does the job required as a sneeze and cough guard and still allows me to chat to my customers which is something I enjoy doing. No screen will ever be perfect and airtight and also there is the payment issue with either cash or a contactless card payment.

Does the FN one meet the required certification standard?
-
snipped...
Test certification to a known test standard should be sought to satisfy yourself that the material used has been proven to be shatterproof (the supplier should have access to this information).
Consideration should also be given to the placement of security screens in order to ensure that the effective operation of safety equipment such as side airbags are not hindered.
Kind regards,
National Transport Authority
Pen-pusher rules:
- Probably better asking the supplier FN (and maybe the sub-contractor in Baldonnell). They'll have the docs. And the expertise to know about airbags and the like?
- Might get a bit murky if you had to stand up in court and defend yourself. 'But I got an email from...' a company who doesn't make a penny unless I work. "Sure, it'll be grand, what could possibly go wrong" is always a great legal defense!
