Title: Screens glorious screens .
Post by: john m on May 15, 2020, 03:46:43 pm
Thank you for contacting the NTA (National Transport Authority). We refer to your recent correspondence received on 12th May 2020.

There is no specific SPSV prohibition on having a clear partition between the driver and the passengers. It is important to ensure that the partition is of a shatterproof material so that in the event of any impact no danger would be presented to the driver or passengers (this would fall under general health and safety requirements in the workplace). Test certification to a known test standard should be sought to satisfy yourself that the material used has been proven to be shatterproof (the supplier should have access to this information).

In order to remain compliant with SPSV internal vehicle dimensions, sufficient legroom should remain (650mm minimum) measured longitudinally and horizontally from the front face of the backrest at uncompressed squab height to the rear face of the seat or surface immediately in front of it.

For vehicles fitted with a full dividing screen, partition or bulkhead between the driver and passenger compartment, an intercom and an induction loop is required. Signage should be placed in the passenger compartment to advise passengers of this.

Consideration should also be given to the placement of security screens in order to ensure that the effective operation of safety equipment such as side airbags are not hindered.

If you require any further information, please contact the Information Line on 0761 064000.

Kind regards,

National Transport Authority

They already looked at making it compulsory and rejected the idea .I was sure they would have had a policy document before they discussed fitting screens .I already knew the answer Dollymount before I asked the question I was just confirming it .They rejected compulsory screens as we all drive different types of vehicle so costs to drivers would be prohibitive .Read back over the Screen tread I told lads not to use Perspects as it is not shatterproof .The screen should be fit in a way not to injur both driver and passenger mine is designed to come loose on impact .

There was an interesting episode of Lovejoy, I sort of remember, where he had to get £3k in a day, with a starter of say £20, by buying and selling, and he did it, a bit far fetched maybe, but it was good entertainment.

True story .I moved to Clondalkin and went into Tuttills in the Village and they had big glass fruit bowls for sale for 50p I asked for the manager and got a deal on them for 45p each then I picked up a box with a dozen in it fucking heavy I was never going to carry them all about 12 boxes so I moved two boxes at a time to the bus stop and got the bus to Ballyfermot unloaded then moved them two boxes at a time walked about 100 yards put the two boxes down then went back for two more until the pile was all forwarded by 100 yards .Then I start knocking doors selling them for a £ took me all day but I sold the lot .Made a bit of coin then If you are out around Clare Hall you will notice wodden wall placks with your house number on them I designed them use to go around all the Aluminium window fitters getting the off cuts from the window sills Teak,Oroko ,Mahogany anything more that 9 inches out of the sKip then cut them into shape and had a router and a drum sander to put a design on the edge .Sold about 50,000 of them throughout Dublin they are everywhere .I originally did them on a Bicycle then bought a car .I use to give local kids a job selling them .They would get orders I paid a£ for the first 5 you sold and £2 comission on anything over that .No problem selling 5 but the bigger commission meant your mammy would sell them for you down the bingo to her mates .I also bought a few 1000 fiber optic christmas trees that were meant for Super Value but didnt arrive in the country in time to fulfill the contract so I got them cheap again went on the knocker .Making money is easy holding on to it is the problem .I use to make decrotive steel gates but to much work .You drive out to measure up go collect the steel and decorations drive home make them up deliver them then drive home but your price dosent cover all the running around .

If that means what I think it means, my Octavia would be borderline.  Just went out and measured.  With no screen, it's about 650-670mm depending on how you measure it.  As you can probably guess, I'm not very good at DIY  ;D

Its q hell of a lot less important what the NTA rules are ,then what the insurance rules are.but none of tou seem to place any importance on the fact that these scumbags would have a way out of settlng a claim because you made a modification to your car

In another thread, someone posted they were told by their insurance company (or broker) that 'screens' were ok.  No detail.

I agree with you though.  I'd want something in writing from the NTA and insurance company that 'my' screen was ok before I'd put one in.

I'm probably not gonna put in a screen unless the NTA tells me to so I don't really care.

My only concern is the NTA giving out instructions that may or may not be feasible.  E.g., the 2m 'social distancing' in a taxi is impossible.
Title: Re: Screens glorious screens .

I just dont get why taxis were deemed an essential service.if rhey were to be deemed an essential service, then I think it should have been done in such a way that a select few were chosen to carry out ONLY emergency transportation where needed, and at full fare plus .

You tell them that then and Im sure they will revoke your licence .Or you could read the builders federation guidelines about co workers and social distancing .There is an exemption for workers who need to work in close proximity .So there are exemptions .Big Dommo was in the ESSO on Ballyfermot Road today he noticed the lad inside the shop was less than 2 meters away from him when he was paying at the hatch .I would bet money the fella on the till is not bitching about it .

Physical distancing is only one aspect of social distancing. Work from home is another...

Does your screen meet the required specs erm and, if so, are you going to go back on the tools and start flogging them?

Maybe I'm a bit OCD but I've always been interested in 'the rules' the pen pushers send out and the 'real world'.

- As a teenager, I got kicked out of my (middle-class) youth club because I actually read the rules and argued with the 'adults' in the room.
- On the eve of leaving school, I got sent a SW ID card by SW.  When I went to sign on/get in the system, I was asked for ID.  I showed SW the card but they wouldn't accept it.  Pen-pusher rules.
- When the money-laundering rules came in, the Bank of Ireland sent a letter using my name and address to my house asking me to prove my name and address.
- etc, etc...

It's like the Govt/NTA are saying 'everything is ok', we've sent out a press release about social distancing, screens, refusing cash, & no front seat passengers.  But how does that actually work in the real world?  It's like nobody in authority has asked someone who acutally has to do it.  But... But... when the shit hits the fan and it ends up in court or insurance claim (or the Joe Duffy show), they'll point to their press releases and we'll be screwed!

We have to play by their rules so it's useful to know how they think?

Is there a sticker on the screen confirming this.I thought all products used in the EU had to be CE or TUV approved .Is DIN not just Uk approval? If so it is not approved in the EU.

CE marks aren't worth a toss

A manufacturer or importer is entitled to place the CE Mark on their product after they have met the requirements of all relevant European Directives.

An importer I worked for just stuck the sticker on everything they brought it prior to dispatch, nobody checked anything and nobody seemed to give a fuck.

Not an ambassador, there is a limit to my promiscuity.

Maybe immune, but no contact tracing back to me, from anyone who might have had it in the cab, via despatch co, or Fuk'd Now.

Is anyone aware of any driver being contact traced because anyone in the cab had the pox?

Is anyone aware of any taxi driver confirmed as having got the pox while working in his cab?

I'm not sure that's true.  In other countries, they'd done studies recently and found that only 15% or less of the population had virus antibodies in them.  So if you apply that to Ireland, the virus still has plenty of victims to target!

What freaks me out is that there's no clear cut 'victim'.  Old people seem to die a lot but lots of them survive as well.  Other things like heart & lung disease, diabetes, and obesity are factors as well.  But some die and some don't.

If I could figure out who to avoid/refuse in the taxi, I'd be a happier man...

I think a simple test for these screens would be to get somebody to sit in the back, drive down the street and get them to spray a quick squirt of Lynx Africa, if you can smell it in the front of the taxi the screen isn't worth a wank. One thing for sure I'm not going out till there's a vaccine.
