RTE have named and shamed Kildare, Laois and Offally as responsible for 48% of recent COVID '19 cases. Should Mehaul introduce local lockdowns to contain the virus and to punish counties with habitual or culturally low standards of personal hygiene in the hope that such punishments will encourage rehabilitation?
https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/0806/1157761-laois-kildare-offaly/ (https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/2020/0806/1157761-laois-kildare-offaly/)
Specific Covid-19 warning for Kildare, Laois, Offaly
Updated / Thursday, 6 Aug 2020 22:54
Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr Ronan Glynn has said everyone in Kildare, Laois and Offaly needs to pay particular attention if they have any symptoms of Covid-19 and double down on public health measures.
A specific warning has been issued for people living in those three counties, which saw 226 cases over the past 14 days.
That represents 48%, or almost half, of all cases in Ireland over that time period.
Dr Glynn said the cases come on the back of an already significant number of cases and clusters in those three counties.
People aged over 70 in Kildare, Laois, Offaly should take particular care and limit the number of people they are in contact with to a very small extent, he said.
The Department of Health was today notified of five deaths associated with Covid-19 as well as 69 new cases of the virus.
Of those cases 22 are located in Offaly, 19 in Kildare, eight in Laois, six in Dublin, and 14 are spread across eight other counties.
Thirty-nine of today's cases are associated with outbreaks or close contacts of a confirmed case.
Dr Glynn said the outbreaks are currently contained but that the National Public Health Emergency Team is concerned that they could spread into the wider community, especially in Kildare, Laois and Offaly.
A cause for concern, Dr Ronan Glynn said, was that there appears to be some 60 cases notified to NPHET in the three counties which will be reported tomorrow, pending contact tracing.
The Acting Chief Medical Officer said there have been "four significant outbreaks in meat processing type facilities" across counties Kildare and Offaly.
Dr Glynn said two of the outbreaks have been in a dog food factory in Naas in Co Kildare and at a meat processing plant in Tullamore, Co Offaly.
The other two are in meat processing factories in Kildare town and in Timahoe in Co Kildare, he said.
He said the locations of the factories are one thing, but he said clearly the people working in the factories live in a range of places within these counties.
Dr Glynn said there should not be an undue focus on particular locations, as he said "the counties as a whole need to be careful".
Asked if localised lockdowns should be considered in Kildare, Laois and Offaly, Dr Glynn said "with something like this, you can't rule anything out".
He said the situation will be monitored very closely and further guidance will be given tomorrow.
The Acting Chief Medical Officer said there have been "four significant outbreaks in meat processing type facilities" across counties Kildare and Offaly.
To date, he said, there have been around 150 cases in three of those sites.
There have also been a number of clusters in three direct provision centres in the Midlands, which Dr Glynn said now appear to be under control.
He said that NPHET has recommended this week that regular testing of people living in direct provision centres is offered, beginning over the next week or two, but it will not be mandatory testing.
80 cases at Kildare factory - many asymptomatic
A food factory in Co Kildare has suspended all processing operations following confirmation of 80 Covid-19 cases.
O'Brien Fine Foods in Timahoe said they took the decision to test all of its employees following a confirmed case of the virus on 30 July. The company said this was their third case at the facility at that point.
In a statement, the food company said it engaged with the Health Service Executive and a private testing provider to "expediate" testing.
"Of 243 tests completed, 80 have been confirmed as positive for Covid-19. Of the 80 confirmed, the level of asymptomatic infectivity appears to be very high."
A further 42 employees are to be tested.
The company said that those who have tested positive have been advised to isolate and full risk assessment and contact tracing procedures are under way.
9% of meat factory workers diagnosed with Covid-19 - SIPTU
Unions representing workers from meat factories in the midlands where clusters of the coronavirus have been detected have said all factories must be shut down when cases are confirmed and the workers sent home on full pay.
Greg Ennis, area organiser for SIPTU, said that more than 9% of the workforce in the meat industry had been diagnosed with Covid-19.
He said the situation was extremely serious.
He said union representatives will meet with Meat Industry Ireland on Monday next to discuss what he said was a crisis situation.
He said in recent weeks many factories where the virus was detected did not close down while testing was continuing.
He said it was essential that workers' safety be put first and they were allowed to return home but without their pay and conditions being affected.

Two more weeks and the numbers will be in lockdown territory again.
-
Guess im not going back to work yet, ah well another few weeks on the poxwonga
-
Wash your hands.
-
Hopefully it's a localised spike, is contained and the numbers reduce again, everyone needs to take personal responsibility.
Trouble with this disease is how it treats different age/ethnic/vulnerable profiles differently, unfortunately those who are least affected are the very ones who are the most selfish and don't give a flying fuck about anyone but themselves.
-
Disease ridden pox'ssss!!
-
Not necessarily, TOO. You might remember DM and SB slagging off OAP taxi drivers for spreading the virus... that was before DM became an OAP and went back to work himself to make up for the loss of puppy dole.
-
Self isolation works .Big Dommos cousin Barbara had warts on her labia so locked herself in the back bedroom of the gaffs near the flats soon after that the lads on the football team all stopped scratching .Should we bring back internment or make infected people wear bells .Donny T says back when lepords wore bells and we had internment we had no Covid and he should know he is a Genius .
-
Do you remember the aforementioned DM in self-isolation. Not a word of a lie, he came on here to check that it was OK for him to go out for his daily walks.... as if we didn't already know he was only isolating because there was a higher puppy dole payment for the diseased back then. I'd say if he dropped a 1c coin it'd hit him in the back of the head!

NOTEWORTHY
New Covid-19 restrictions for Kildare, Laois and Offaly to kick in from midnight
The Government announced the measures on the back of NPHET advice following a spike in cases in recent days.
4 minutes ago 17,157 9
THE GOVERNMENT HAS announced regional restrictions for Kildare, Laois and Offaly following an increase of Covid-19 cases in the three counties over the past two weeks.
Those resident in either of the three counties are advised not to travel outside of their county in a bid to prevent transmission of the virus. People are asked to only undertake essential travel at this time.
Pubs and restaurants are to operate as takeaway only. Childcare facilities will remain open as will retail outlets.
The restrictions will come into effect from midnight and last for two weeks.

What are the odds?
In most cases the horses are asymptomatic; that is to say they have it but they don't know it. If they adhere to the guidelines on social etiquette and hygiene, and keep the house parties on the back burner for now, the risks will be greatly diminished

Look like they're using yous as a pilot Tony.I'd say the weekend will be busy for those working elsewhere as people might be afraid they're gonna lose their drinking privileges.I'm gonna force myself out for a few pints in preparation.
-
Its the knock on effect .If the horses and jockies in these counties cannot travel then will there be enough horses for compedative sport or will racing be called off and the bookies close again .Im sure the people whos jobs depend on it give a fuck Roy you selfish self serving bastard wont get it until you get it .Will the NTA place restrictions on local registered taxies and hacks or will they allow them to spread the fever .
-
I guess they could fire up FN and work Dublin & surrounding counties.

If you live in leixlip or Nass are you allowed work Dublin or are you toxic .
-
Always wondered about Leixlip - doesn't the county line run through the middle of Main St?
We're 'essential services' so, in theory, we've been able to work all-Ireland since the pandemic began...
-
There will be lots coming from Leixlip into Lucan and Clonsilla and Dunboyne for a few pints. It's gonna be very hard to enforce.

If it did, once you pass your driver licence test, if you were a Dublin or kildare resident driver you would be handed both Dublin AND kildare area licenses. The same way that meath and Louth drivers can work both counties because drogheda is split across both.

Question .Why are all the other meat plants in the country not closed ?

I'd say others might know better.I think Vandriver and Theoneanonly were talking about this subject recently.
I'd test the water before signing off your COVID payment.
-
SERIOUSLY .I would consider this new idea of local lock downs before I consider giving up the Covid Coin .In the last bit of law passed I think there is a Cutoff point of 17 September to apply for Covid Coin .So what happens if after you sign off we then go into a short local lockdown .Do you have to apply for Unemployment Benefit ? The Schools are set to reopen at the end of the month ,if they do that then puts pressure on the Government to play fair with the Publicans .Even though there have been no outbrakes in pubs unlike meat factories ,Hospitals ,Nursing Homes you know the sort of places Larry Goodman has invested in they still remain closed or restricted .I think Mick from Cork is going all in, one big gamble get the schools open then he has no excuse not to lift all restrictions .If I was considering returning I would at least wait till the end of August .You saw the response to yesterdays outbreak it looks like the Government are going to play it safe .Really dont see any logic in allowing Horseracing with horses traveling from infected areas all over the country accompanied by stable staff but the local football team cant train or play in their local league .Schools and Colleges with thousands of students on campus can reopen with Gyms and sporting facilities but local gyms are closed because the local factory has an outbreak .There seems to be no logic to how the government are organizing this .So unless you are financially or emotionally in despair I would hold off until we see if the schools go back and if this local lock down is a one off or part of the new normal .If its part of the new normal how will we be compensated if we are without work .If your going back to work for your head fair enough but if your going back for cash the pot isint as full as it was and its a bit Miwadi the more of you diluting the pool of work the less return for efford .

What id like to know is how does the weather know its lockdown again in laois?

Maybe Sat? You can work 6 days but you still get the full PUP because you did not work Friday.

The payment period of COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment is Friday to Thursday. If you close your claim to return to work and have at least one qualifying day in that period you will receive full payment for that week.
-
Very hard to now when to go back, Im paying insurance now the last 2 or 3 weeks and the taxi is parked up doing nothing. Yesterday was a big blow, and I have a feeling there may be further lockdowns in other counties in the next few weeks. money wouldn't be an issue to be honest so maybe im better off back out working, meeting people.

In other words no matter what day you close it (except Fri--if you close it Friday you're effectively telling them you started work that day and therefore would not have any qualifying days in that week) ) you will qualify for a last 350. I quit last Saturday so I am expecting my final payment this Tuesday. It berra be or there'll be war!

And the difference is .If its a small family owned business like a pub you will be crucified But if its ........A construction worker has tested positive for Covid-19 at the Intel facility in Leixlip, Co Kildare.
The person was feeling unwell over the weekend and asked for a test, it has emerged.
They were diagnosed with the virus shortly afterward and are now self-isolating.
A spokesperson for the contractor they worked for has said it is liaising with the HSE on the necessary follow-up procedures.
It comes as Kildare, as well as Laois and Offaly have been put into a local lockdown.
THEY CLOSED SITES IN TOWNSEND STREET BUT INTEL IS SPECIAL .
-
I wouldn't say they will or would want to be treated any less safely that any other construction site
-
Maybe they'll just close the construction site in Intel. Never been to Intel but I'd say it's the size of a small town. If they can close the pub in a town's Main St while the Spar shop beside it can stay open, they could do the same in Intel?

Another case in a creche on UCD campus. I wonder if they brought it back from their Bank Hol weekend vacation? Is South Dublin next for a lockdown! Deploy the Army on the Liffey bridges :D

They have numerous fabrication buildings spread around Leixlip as well as a research centre and building site(s) all have their own facilities and as someone suggested earlier the fabrication areas are surgically clean far beyond what you would see in a hospital theatre, I'd say they'd be able to isolate a breakout to a small number of people. I have friends who worked on sites there and they were made operate to the highest level of health and safety

I know that and Covneys brother is the bossman I heard a rumour last week that there MIGHT be a problem in a factory in Wexford but it seems there isint unless the factory was advised any more cases and it would be closed .As I said ONly there seems to be different standards being applied to different groups .

I'm hoping Dublin meets that criteria, (of being different to other counties when it comes to lockdowns)
