Title: Dublin Taxi Driving
Post by: john m on August 15, 2020, 08:46:33 am
Reading different articles over the last few months ,will it be viable for all the Dublin based taxis to make a living full time .More bus lanes and cycle lanes .Pedestrianization of the City .Looks like the Grafton Street area plan may be reactivated making South William Street a walk only street No taxi access to College Green and now there is a plan to ban cars from Capel Street add in a 24 hour bus service and you got to ask if taxi driving full time will be viable .Frankie once said this is only a part time gig .I think he is right .

Im a 58 year old fat man cant do much else as sitting in a taxi with little or no exercise has fucked up my health but im looking for alternative full or part time work .So any body else got concerns about the viability of this industry in the future for full time drivers .add in up to 20% commission on app work my personal opinion is Frankie is correct time to get another gig .

It won't be a problem until the last taxi driver is taken off the COVID payment. Some might not be back until next year.

During the bad years there was no COVID payment to claim so in a sense the real hardship will be deferred until after Xmas.Until then you might get by.

Double jobbers don't like paying tax on their second job at the higher rate.So the move towards apps and card payments has a small positive this time.

I dont think you have to spend it up front, because its backdated to 13 march.so any expenditure you had since 13 th march to now,is applicable.at least thats my understanding of it

And spend a grand before you get the 'grand' grant.

You should be OK with that. Don't know if they will drill down to the micro detail of what is on each and every application form cos there will be so many, but keep invoices and receipts for a year anyway. One item on my list is phone. Tesco have an offer on a smart phone and a 32" smart TV for €250. Sure where would you be going?

Some of the questions on the application form is crazy.what what was the bill with VAT,then it asks what was the bill without VAT. How the fukk do I know is my answer ?

My accountant told me that if the receipt doesn't show a breakdown, just put the full amount in the appropriate box. I suppose you could alternatively calculate the vat portion yourself. It's 23%, but I don't know if everything is subject to vat. I stand to be corrected on that. I wouldn't overly worry about stuff like that.

The 23% that currently applies will drop to 21% on Sept 1st,
The 13.5% rate applies for example if you left your car in for repairs, labour is charged at this rate.

Feck all social distancing going on in Berlin D 2 yesterday. They'll be made a severe example of I reckon, in a "let that be a lesson to the rest o yiz" type thing.

If it wasn't for smartphones they would have gotten away with it.The rent on that Berlin place must be huge if they're prepared to take such chances.

I picked up the manager last year and he seemed like a smart bloke.Probably thinks COVID is a wind up.

What's the difference between claiming these expenses now and writing it off your tax bill next year. I presume you can't do both....

I'll be doing just that! It's a grant so I'm thinking it should not interfere with the ol returns..

the grant gives you 80% of your outgoing back, whereas claiming gives you the tax portion. max 43% at highest rate
Not sure if you can do both
