Batteries. Cheapest for my yoke is c.€180 from Michaels Garage - c. stg£120 in carpartsforless but they don't deliver batteries to Ireland and I'd say it'd be expensive to put through Parcel Motel?
Anywaysanall, I'll have to call an AGM before spending that kinda money with no income. Current battery is down to lasting less than 3 days without a drive.
Is the AGM battery really necessary or would a normal (wet cell) - at half the price - be as good a bet for a little used car?
-
Parcel Motel isn't as expensive as I thought. They won't put anything over 10kg in a locker but one can collect oversize/overweight items from any of their depots - I think there's one in Finglas. Anywaysanall I put all the 30s - 30cm x 30cm x 30cm x 30kg into their price calculator and it quotes €7.00. Definitely an option as this link https://advancedbatterysupplies.co.uk/product/heavy-duty-096-car-battery/ gives the weight as 18kg.

You might get away with a regular 12v but it probably won't last as long.
Try charging the one you have. They take a slowish charge over a long time to replenish them to full power. It might not be fit for the bin just yet.
By the way I got a battery delivered from Carparts for less a few years ago.Think they used DHL.
-
I haven't tried slow charging yet, I've just jump started it as required and taken it for a c.13 minute drive. Maybe I should dig out the charger and leave it on overnight?
cp4less just says some items in your basket - battery is all that was in it - are unavailable for delivery when I select ROI. However, still over €40 cheaper than Michael and c.€50 cheaper than Halfords or Battery World going through Parcel Motel.
-
If you have somewhere safe to charge it just charge the thing until it won't take anymore.Mine takes a max of 4amps and about ten hours. It might come back to some sort of usable state until you go back to work.I don't trust me Aldi Chinese charger so I won't leave it overnight.
Or jump it again and leave it running for a few hours in the garden.
-
How would I know when it won't take anymore? I haven't seen my charger for a good few years but I'm guessing it'd make Aldi's look state off the art. Leaving it running might be a better bet... and save me from crawling into the cupboard under the stairs!
-
Maybe I'll go to work for a few hours when I have a few hours to spare. I guess driving around with the start/stop function disabled would be as good as leaving it running while stationary? - and I might earn a few ton into the bargain... and/or catch the virus!
-
Usually the smart chargers turn off automatically but I never fully trust them.If the battery reads over 12.8 v I think it should be good.If it refuses to charge over 12.8v I think it's will need replacing.
My AGM and battery pack is giving me trouble again.Nearly tempted to go back to work just so it stays charged.Nearly..
The start stop shouldn't really kick in until the battery is properly charged. No harm leaving it off.Probably doesn't help that much.
-
Mine has steadily deteriorated. At the start of lockdown a c.13 min drive once a fortnight kept it operational, now it's down to needing a c. 13 min run every two days. The start/stop on the octys are a bit odd in that it will kick in when there's a warning on the dash saying 12v battery low, charge by driving. Also, unlike other start/stop cars I've encountered (not many to be fair) it kicks in before the engine heats up, at least in normal circumstances. I hate the idea of burning diesel for no reason other than to satisfy the whims of the mechanically propelled vehicle hence the temptation to go and earn a few ton.
-
Do ya need to feed the meter 12v for the timer wen yu remove yur battery?
-
I think they're alright for a day or two. Ideally I'd charge the battery in the car anyway... but that obviously makes monitoring the voltage more of a chore. On balance, I'm probably better off working for a few hours a week and/or buying a new battery!

Fuck Sake Rodent I thought you were calling a meeting or something .You need to be more descriptive with your tread titles like ,Shocking or not Shocking or To start or not to Start .Masked references to your pass mark in English in your Intercert .
-
Point taken. While it would be irresponsible to arrange/attend any meetings in the current climate I can see how said misinterpretation arose.

Try Europarts in Santry.
-
Mad money in Europarts. They're the expensive wing of carparts4less. They were dirt cheap for a while when they launched but the honeymoon period is well and truly over!
Front runner at the moment is this one: https://advancedbatterysupplies.co.uk/product/advanced-xd-096-agm-battery-stop-start-technology/ with free delivery to Norn Iron so + €7 to collect from Parcel Motel - or the crowd in cappagh as per Golfer14's contribution.
Anywaysanall, I'm not rushing into anything. Went out equipped to jump start this evening and it fired up all by itself - it was at the end of it's tether though - despite not having been driven since I went to Lidl last Friday.. so, maybe it's fixing itself!
-
A lot of it is temperature related with batteries.
Tell yer man in Europarts Santry that you know they're related to the UK crowd and they might give you a discount.I got that impression the last time I returned a wheel bearing to them.

The self-service parcel service Parcel Motel is to cease providing a virtual UK address from December 28th because of Brexit.
In an email to customers on Friday it said that from that date “our virtual address services in the UK will be temporarily suspended. This means that from this date, we will no longer accept deliveries at the UK virtual address.”
The UK address, in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, was used by people who bought items from online sites that stated they could only be delivered to a UK address.
The goods were then collected by the company and delivered to one of the Parcel Motel pick-up locations in the Republic.
In the email it said that Brexit will impact on these shipments using the virtual UK address.

I've never had to return a battery under warranty and there's usually small print anyway e.g. excludes taxis or cars driven less than 30km/month, etc, etc... I wouldn't be concerned about it once it's from a reputable firm as Golfer14's clearly is.
If ya wouldn't mind, SB. Not sure if there's a compatible Toyota one but it's a type 096 AGM... the AGM bit is important... as per the link above.

He texted me back and said he wouldn't be able to get that battery. I see what you mean about expensive:
Europarts - https://www.eurocarparts.com/en_ie/p/exide-agm-096-car-battery-760cca-3-year-guarantee-444778006 (https://www.eurocarparts.com/en_ie/p/exide-agm-096-car-battery-760cca-3-year-guarantee-444778006)
€481.00 sheesh!

can you disengage the stop start function and fit a standard 12v battery ?

An Post have changed their Address Pal system aswell....their current service can be used up to Dec 26th...but from Jan the cost will rise to €6.50...that's delivered to your door....if you want it delivered to an alternative address or collect at your post office the fee is the same....the current fee for collecting from your nominated post office is €3.95....kinda looks like they're using Brexit to up their charges.....currently if you want it delivered to your gaff it's more expensive.
-
It's not really €481, SB... there'll be a 40-50% discount code on the main page... still significantly more expensive than Micks, Halfords, Battery World, etc... and very significantly more expensive than their sister firm on the mainland, carparts4less for exactly the same product. Haven't tried the motor since last Thursday so I dunno if it's dead again or not. Either way I'm not going to rush into spending my puppy dole, I'll probably follow Golfer's advice in due course.
