Vaccinations delays 'put us in a problem' - Taoiseach

Delays to the supply of the AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine will "put us in a problem", the Taoiseach has said.
Yesterday the British pharmaceutical company warned that supplies of its coronavirus vaccine to Europe will be "lower than originally anticipated" due to reduced production at a manufacturing site.
Speaking on RTÉ's Brendan O'Connor programme, Micheál Martin said they were waiting on this vaccine and that the delay will "put us in a problem", but added they are going to have to deal with it.
"AstraZeneca was going to be the catalyst to be allowed to move from low level to mass vaccination," Mr Martin said.
He said vaccinations for people over the age of 70 may be delayed due to the issues.
The Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, has described delays in supply of the AstraZeneca vaccine over the coming months as a "real setback".
However Mr Martin said it is still the Government's objective to be at the point of mass vaccination by the end of quarter two.
He said April, May and June are key months in terms of vaccination roll-out.
Pfizer has delivered in accordance with their timelines, the Taoiseach has said, and we will get more from other producers also, including Johnson & Johnson.
He said by this Sunday half of all frontline healthcare workers will be vaccinated.
Expressing his worry with the emergence of the new variants of Covid and if they might undermine the efficacy of vaccines, he said that was focused on at the meeting of EU leaders earlier this week.
Mr Martin said it is a race against time with on the one hand the vaccination roll-out and on the other the variants and if they will "undermine the efficacy of vaccines".
He said research is not comprehensive enough to know just yet.
The Taoiseach also said case numbers have to be in the hundreds for current restrictions to ease, adding that the new variant is his concern.
"It will become the dominant variant. It is at 62% of all cases," he said.

He said Ireland will have Covid-19 restrictions for the first six months of the year.
"By the summer we will be in a changed environment because of the large scale vaccination that will have been achieved by then."
Defending the relaxing of restrictions at Christmas, Mr Martin said "we didn't see the variant coming" but acknowledged that alarm bells were not rung as quick as they could have been.
He said we have to learn from this and said he would be more cautious going forward.
Meanwhile, the Chief Clinical Officer at the HSE said they are hoping to start administering vaccinations to the next cohort of healthcare workers in the first or second week of February.
Speaking to RTÉ's Saturday with Katie Hannon, Dr Colm Henry said it will happen as soon as they get a delivery of Pfizer/BioNtech doses in February and it will be given to healthcare workers.
He said for now they have to complete the two-dose schedule for those who have already received the first vaccine within the required timeframe.
Dr Henry said they are hoping they will reach the figure of 70,000 vaccinations administered to nursing home staff and residents by tomorrow.
He also said there will be " bumps in the road", referring to the delay in the AstraZeneca vaccine to Ireland, adding that there will be "bumps in the road."
People told to 'forget' foreign travel
Mr Martin said in the current climate people thinking of going abroad on holiday can "forget it" and said gardaí would be at the airport checking to see why people are planning to travel.
"No one should be travelling" he said, unless it is necessary for work.
He said the rule that you need a negative PCR test seems to be working to deter people from travelling.
"1,000 came in on Thursday, only one didn't have a PCR negative test," he said.
Mr Martin said he and other politicians are now getting complaints from those who are not allowed on a plane because "someone said I didn't have a PCR test".
"We are getting complaints from Spain and elsewhere. Already that is having impact."
However, he agreed there has to be "better follow through" in terms of people coming in.
He said the majority of people recently, it would appear, were Irish who went abroad for Christmas holidays and were coming back.
He said they will also be looking at other quarantine options for those travelling in from South Africa and Brazil because of the worry over the new variants.
He said the variant "doesn't seem to be such a big issue in the north" and he cannot understand that, adding that he does not want to get political about it.

Yesterday, Mr Martin and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson have discussed the latest information to emerge about the more virulent strain of Covid-19 that was first identified in the UK.
Mr Martin has expressed concern following suggestions that the variant may be linked to higher death rates.
The discussion comes as the UK announced that those who contract the more highly transmissible strain have a 30 to 40% greater chance of dying from the disease will strengthen calls for adherence to the public health measures.
The variant already accounts for 62% of Covid-19 cases in Ireland and is becoming even more dominant.
Yesterday, Mr Martin said there would be no easing of Level 5 restrictions at the end of this month.
It is understood the Cabinet sub-committee on Covid-19 will consider further tightening of travel restrictions at its scheduled meeting on Monday.
A full Cabinet meeting on Tuesday will decide on any additional measures.

As I was telling you Rodent I did a survey for the HSE recently and called the third in command a fucking liar .They say 576587798 many needles by April but thats bollox WHY ,we are only getting 40,000 doses a week thats enough for 20 ,000 full doses , less than 100,000 a month about a Million a year so it will take FOUR YEARS with the present PROVISIONALLY APPROVED FOR EMERGENCY DOSES to vaccinate us all .That is THE FACT according to government figures anything else is bolloxology based on an assumption that other Vaccines WILL be approved .

Also, I never suggested that I or anyone else should suspend trading at any time. In fact, I applauded - both virtually and in the real world - those who continued to provide a service. The main reason I didn't join them was because the puppy dole gave me the option to sit on my fat arse saving the world when not wandering around retail outlets. However, I did cut down supermarket visits doing a weekly rather than twice or thrice weekly grocery shop and only visiting one supermarket instead of two or three on each occasion. Let there be no doubt, I've suffered hardship as a result... have you ever tried substituting Bisto with Newgate or whatever Lidl's gravy is called?

Hal here is how the Man who hires casual labour works stuff out .In the Far Far ago he was up in the Childrens court for non attendance at school it bored him .Anyway the Judge said to him you need to get your arse back in to school as there is a LEGAL requirement that a student ATTENDS CLASS a minimum of xxx amount of Days in a Scholastic Year .Thats the LAW simple as .
Now our present Minister for Knowledge has no knowledge of the LAW surrounding Education .If Kids are not in CLASS for the minimum amount of CLASS TIME then LEGALLY that Scholastic Year is incomplete .How then can you hold end of term exams legally .
Next issue is after last years debacle or teacher Grades and Private Grade Schools .A few well off idiots who thought they were hard done by as their private education was not counted or credited took court cases with Judgement Reserved by the Court and then other kids who were home educated took court cases asking how can they be graded without sitting exams Reserved Judgement as well .
The only Conclusion to be drawn is there will not be Leaving Cert exams in June as students have not completed enough days in class .Distance learning cannot be counted as class time as not every child in the state has access to internet so there will be legal challenges .
Best guess exams for all in August or else State awards every student an ungraded Leaving cert and leaves it up to the Universities and Colleges to organise their own entrance exams .That will suit the Rich kids as School league tables will be used and lads from Rock and St Gerards will get places in Uni before kids from Ballybrickin Community College or Clougher Road Tech .
Its not rocket science There is a huge difference between the true truth and Political truth .Dublin City Corporation did not vote to fund this years St Patricks Day Parade back in October last year when they voted through their budget .Ask yourself Why ?What do they know they are not telling the public .A man who employs casual Labour can work out most of this stuff .Bit like a man who drives a taxi on a casual basis will know when the big Gig or Sports event is on .

Green party leader Eamon Ryan remains hopeful that the traditional Leaving Certificate exam will go ahead this year.
However, the Transport Minister has warned people not to book foreign holidays this summer as he believes travel will not fully reopen before the end of the year.
It comes as Cabinet is expected to sign off on a raft of new measures and restrictions on travel this morning.
However, it is not expected that any decisions will be made on a reopening of schools at today's crunch meeting, as Education Minister Norma continues discussions with teaching unions and other representative bodies.
Asked if the State exams will take place, Mr Ryan said: "The first priority is getting special needs students back but the second priority is getting Leaving Cert students back in school, and we will be able, in my mind, to do a written Leaving Cert."
He said the Leaving Cert is "the fairest system" and it would be good for the mental health of students to hold it.
The Ministers HOPEFULL so is every oulone going to bingo .Then the Brilliantly dismissive bit (Education Minister Norma) no second name even the rag writers have no respect for her.

Merch have a look at this ...Two German outlets, Handelsblatt and Bild, cited government sources alleging that the AstraZeneca/Oxford drug has a poor performance record with senior citizens. Bild reported that among adults 65 and older, efficacy was “less than 10 percent,” while Handelsblatt put the figure at eight percent. The papers claimed that due to the worrying data, German officials did not expect the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to approve the drug for use on over-65s.

This fuckology has to stop Yesterday's extraordinary row over the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has just become even stranger. The German government spent much of Tuesday rubbishing reports they had found the jab to be only 8 per cent effective among the over 65s. A claim that was published by the Düsseldorf-based financial paper Handelsblatt following a tip-off from anonymous sources within the German government. Instead, according to the country's health ministry, there had been a very embarrassing misunderstanding:

At first glance it seems that the reports have mixed up two things: about 8 per cent of those tested in the AstraZeneca efficacy study were between 56 and 69... But one cannot deduce an efficacy of only 8 per cent with older people from that.
Surely an open and closed case of mortifying mathematical misreading? Not according to Gregor Waschinski, the paper's political correspondent whose byline appeared above the 1,200 word story. He stuck by his reporting, saying the 8 per cent efficacy figure had been shared by a 'senior figure' within the German government and had been 'corroborated by other sources'. That senior German figure, according to Waschinski, is convinced that they are correct about the low efficacy rate:
It seems the Handelsblatt journalist is now betting his credibility on whether the vaccine will be approved by EU regulators. A decision by the European Medicines Agency is due on Friday — and it is worth noting too that the German paper Bild also ran with a story yesterday about the Oxford jab, again sourced within the German government. According to that paper, the EMA is planning to reject the UK-developed vaccine because of its low efficacy among the over-65s (or, at the very least, dictate that the jab should only be used on young'uns).
So was this just a briefing war that went disastrously wrong? A German official lashing out at AstraZeneca after the firm cut the number of jabs for the EU's failing vaccine programme? Or, just perhaps, we really can expect fireworks on Friday...

Stephen Donnelly has also admitted that many of the new restrictions approved by the Cabinet this week have yet to be hammered out and are simply an "outline" of plans.
It is understood that a number of Ministers raised concerns around the lack of clarity and detail provided on new Covid travel measures during a lengthy Cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning.

The obviously want the leaving cert kids to continue to engage with online studies and not just say fuk it,unlike last year,students had been back in school since Aug/Sept 2019 up until March 2020,some had a lot of projects done and submitted...this academic year 2020/21students haven't spent enough time in school to do fukall....but you'll always have students who after the mocks and if they've done badly...tend to pull a rabbit out of the hat come real exam time....which is why all the work they've done since they started secondary or at least 5th and 6th year should be considered...but i suspect the majority of this years leaving cert students will be expecting a free pass.

Hal me and the Judge came to an agreement in 1973 I would attend school and he wouldnt send me to St Pats and I dont mean a football match .An Academic year is made up of time spent in CLASS not on line IN CLASS thats the legal definition. I told the Judge when I was on the Hop I was self educating in the Museum and Art Gallery We discussed some Irish works of art like Walter Osbourne landscapes and my dislike for Yeats ,Judge agreed I had learned a little but I MUST attend CLASS in SCHOOL thats the LAW he said .The problem they had last year but didnt fix or explain why they did not want sit down exams is they cannot grade you on a year you did not complete in CLASS .The minister for knowing knows this but hasn't changed the legislation .Last year they had a problem with teacher assessments teachers were actually grading their own students and themselves by association and the Kids in the Private Grind Schools were obviously going to be graded very high by their paid for teachers .There is an exemption for home schooling but I think you need to get an exemption and make commitments to time you will teach the children .Looks like the Unions that were outside the Croke Park agreement are holding everything up until they get their pay restoration and deal .Cunts are using Kids as pawns and Government wont call their bluff .Its about fairness Hal Kids in Dublin with good Broadband would have an advantage over kids from Leitrim who only have Candle powered broadband .Ministers still lying like fuck saying the Leaving cert will go ahead as planned .

So the EU say they have a contract from Astra Zeneca to supply vaccines from their 4 plants...two of which are in the UK....but it now transpires (according to Astra) that the UK signed a contract 3 months before that the two UK plants supply of the vaccine would stay in the UK alone!!
And to add to that,the EU gave Astra an upfront payment of €336 million to supply from their 4 plants.

The supplier sent a list of more than 40 different seed types to Mr Mercer on Wednesday, advising him they would no longer be available due to new Irish Sea trading rules.
Northern Ireland’s continued compliance with EU rules on plant health means a variety of plants, seeds, plant products and soils cannot be imported from Great Britain.

Stephen Donnelly appeared to make a series of blunders in a Dáil session on Thursday, claiming he could not remember what he said on Tuesday and giving out the wrong figures on vaccines.
RISE TD Paul Murphy asked the minister: "Earlier this week you quite unbelievably claimed one of the reasons we could not pursue a zero-Covid strategy was that we don’t know for sure that another Covid variant wouldn’t arrive that would make the vaccine ineffective. What on earth did you mean by that?"
Mr Donnelly said he did not recall that he ever made such a claim: "I have to go back and check exactly that interview or statement ... but as you characterise that right now that doesn't sound right to me."
On Tuesday, Mr Donnelly replied to a query on a zero-Covid policy, with a focus on allowing international travellers back into Ireland if enough people had been vaccinated.
"You've got to keep in mind as well, the new complexity which is variants, so the UK variant we now are confident that the vaccines work on it but it's far more contagious than the Wuhan strain for example," he said.
The jury is still out on terms of the Brazilian or South African variant on how exactly they may interact with the vaccines and will the vaccines be just as effective.
"What the virologists are telling us is that there will inevitably other strains popping up around the world as well and while we may all and we will achieve the requisite level of vaccination here at some point this year, it doesn't mean it necessarily will work against other strains and that has to be factored into the strategy for the future."

In the same session, Mr Donnelly told the Dáil that 48,000 Pfizer vaccines arrived into the country this week.
However, the HSE say just 24,570 doses of the Pfizer vaccine arrived in the same time period.
Later, Labour's Alan Kelly said it was "scary" that the minister did not know this.
A row then began in the Dáil when Mr Donnelly then made the decision to share his time with backbencher Cormac Devlin.
Social Democrat TD Róisín Shortall said her understanding was that the slot was for the Minister.
"This whole session is supposed to be about the minister's accountability for his responsibilities," she said.
"Why is he sharing his time with a Government backbencher? It is not acceptable."

IS THIS SHIT ANY FUCKING GOOD AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine should only be given to people aged between 18 and 64, Germany's vaccine committee said in a draft update to its vaccine recommendation, a day ahead of a decision by European regulators on the drugmaker's shot.
"There are currently insufficient data available to assess the vaccine efficacy from 65 years of age," the committee said in a draft resolution made available by the German health ministry on Thursday.
"The AstraZeneca vaccine, unlike the mRNA vaccines, should only be offered to people aged 18-64 years at each stage."
The European Medicines Agency is expected to make a decision on whether to approve AstraZeneca's Covid-19 vaccine on Friday.
AstraZeneca denied on Monday that its Covid-19 vaccine is not very effective for people over 65, after German media reports said officials fear the vaccine may not be approved in the European Union for use in the elderly.

An MP in Mr Johnson's Conservative Party said the UK is not getting special treatment when it comes to supply of the AstraZeneca jab compared with the EU.
Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne, Andrew Bridgen said conflict is coming because the EU has "seriously mishandled" the purchasing and ordering of vaccines.
He said it appears the UK will have "to bail out" the EU, is prepared to do that and "top of the list" would be Ireland because of the land border.
But Mr Bridgen said is not sure the EU would allow the UK to give vaccines directly to Ireland.
