Deliveroo seeks garda meeting over attacks on workers

The food delivery company Deliveroo is seeking a meeting with gardaí after a spate of attacks on its workers around Dublin City Centre.
Deliveroo riders claim they have been regularly threatened at knifepoint by groups of young people attempting to steal their bicycles.
RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne programme spoke to cyclists for the company who say they feel unsafe in Dublin - amid increased animosity between young people and Deliveroo workers over recent incidents.
William and Lucas, both from Sao Paulo in Brazil, spoke to the programme.
Lucas said: "We are facing too many attacks from teenagers. They try stealing our bicycle and hit you with some things and we don't know why it happens because we are just working."
He added: "Three weeks ago I was delivering in Dublin 8 and 15-20 guys tried to stop my bike.
"They tried to throw some chain lock to stop my bike but they couldn't.
"I was very, very, very nervous... I could escape but I have some friends and they couldn't and they lost their bikes."
"There are some days of attacks with glass as well. It's not every day," said William.
He added: "The situation is very bad as we are cycling on the road it can hit our eyes, our hats. It can be a big problem for us. We are just working."

The biggest knacker from the town I live in was a really good footballer, apparently he could have made it as a professional footballer but instead he decided to go down the drugs, drink, gbh, social welfare route.

Arguably, whatever issues exist with anti-social behaviour, gangland terrorism and such like would be more prevalent in the absence of the very progression Mr. Gregory and others championed. Many of the locals still have corpo gaffs or HAP funded flats in the area so there's a relatively healthy mix of socio-economic groups. How much does a 4 bed gaff on Sheriff St go for these days?
Most town centres are dead in the evenings these days, SB. Whatever footfall is about is directed at the "town killer" shopping complexes and back street shebeens. It'll bounce back to some extent in due course but the new normal will probably see less footfall on a longer term basis as folk telecommute and drink at home or continue to support neighbourhood shebeens regardless of whether wet and/or dry licensed premises become accessible. Does your sister-in-law do any white water rafting?

Research carried out by the English Language Students of Ireland found that an increase in permitted working hours and a one-year extension to their visas were some of the main requests from the riders. Founder of ELSU Fiachra Ó Luain said the Government should act to improve working conditions for such workers. "When the Government asks people to cocoon or stay at home, then an increased demand for deliveries is a direct corollary of this, therefore the Government has a direct responsibility and duty of care to these key workers," he has stated in a submission to Government ministers.
Mr Ó Luain said most delivery drivers are here as students working mainly for Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat only qualifying for Stamp 2 Visas which entitles them to work just 20 hours a week. It also does not allow them to work as self employed, which is the basis of the contract with companies like Deliveroo and this means that they have to rent accounts from official holders for €50 a week. This also means they are working under someone else's name and not covered by insurance if they are robbed, assaulted or involved in an accident. Doubts about their employment status also means they are less likely to report attacks.
Deliveroo says riders are allowed to engage a "substitute", but must ensure that this person meets all requirements such as right to work in Ireland and has relevant insurance.
Mr Ó Luain says the Government must ensure that the workers are being paid the minimum wage and called on an end to "boosts" which pay higher during greater demand and incentivise working even when it is not safe.

Sounds like Deliveroo know they're 'bending' the law and turning a blind eye to the status of their 'self-employed' contractors.

Watty that was posted up here before .Most of those Brazillians are here on Portugese ID cards .They dont have student Visas .They just come here and work through an agency who provide cyclists to the food deliverers .That way the responsibility for visas lies with the Agent not the Company .I didnt think it was 50 a week I thought they took a % of your esarnings as it is paid to the agents and they pay you .No need to register for tax or PRSI its all under the counter .A lot of the people working in meat factories are agency workers as well .Nobody gives a fuck until as the Rodent says somebody gets killed .No news papers were writing about how people were gaming the system but somebody gets killed and now everybody is a victim .
