Government Plans To Reduce M50 Speed Limit To 40km Per Hour
SARAH STACEY
5:04 PM - 12 APR 2021
Transport Minister Eamon Ryan has said variable speed limits on the M50 will be introduced at times of high congestion, when driving conditions are dangerous and when there have been incidents on the motorway.
It was reported yesterday that the new speed limits will be as low as 40 km/h on certain parts of the M50 to assist in avoiding tailbacks by creating a better flow of traffic through the entire system.
Is it a good idea?
Motoring journalist Michael Sheridan and Barry Aldworth, Senior Media Officer at AA Ireland, joined us to discuss this.

The M50 is already bugged .It has cables buried in it that can weigh the individual axel weight of trucks and it also has vehivle Id that can give an average speed over a distance so failing to reduce to 80 in an 80 zone could be used to give an average speed over say 3 to 5 K measured distance .

I done a Haz chem licence with ISM a few weeks ago and the trainer was saying that Weight recognition tech is embedded in the 50 and M1 already and they can check that trucks are not overloaded .The cables are embedded in the road deck .They also use average speed cameras in most of the tunnels .Time you in time you out, get an average speed .ISM fella says he is not sure if the legislation to use the information is yet passed or if they are only trialing the system at the moment .
