Uber will cover free trips to and from four vaccination centres in Dublin until the end of August.

The taxi service app said they will cover up to €20 per trip for passengers’ trips to and from vaccination centres - the same cost as an average fare.

This free trip would be for both the first and second dose appointments, and is thus €80 per person. Passengers should enter the code “dublinhub” in the app ahead of booking their journey to activate the offer.

However, the offer is only for people getting vaccinated in either the Aviva Stadium, the Citywest Convention Centre, the Helix Theatre in Dublin City University, or Croke Park.

According to Ash Kebriti, Uber’s general manager for UK and Ireland, this offer is to: “help remove any barriers that could prevent anyone from travelling safely to get their jab, so we’re covering free trips for anyone in Dublin who is entitled to get the vaccine.”

This isn’t the first measure Uber has taken since the pandemic began. They also started using technology to help ensure drivers are wearing a face covering as required by law, unless they are exempt.

However, Uber isn’t the only company which has offered to help people get to and from their vaccine appointments. In February, app-based bike share service Bleeper provided free bike rides to Dubliners getting their vaccine.

It provided people with two free day passes to use for journeys to and from their vaccine appointments at any point this year. Uber’s offer begins today, May 17, and finishes on August 31.

Three of the major vaccination centres are situated within Bleeper's operating zone: The Aviva Stadium, TU Dublin in Grangegorman, and The Helix in DCU.

Bleeper CEO Hugh Cooney said: “We’re proud to be providing this free service to anyone who needs it in the coming months. Our Immunity Mobility initiative will give people a safe, socially distanced option for travelling to and from their vaccine appointments.”

They pay you the first 20 minus the comission .You enter the full fare and get it .The problem is after August people will have two apps on their phone reducing the opportunity we have for full non commission jobs .The Comission next year will be 20% or more in line with other Cities .we are already paying about 40% in running costs between car purchase ,insurance, maintanance take out another 20% You would need to earn a Grand to throuser a roaf .

Grangegorman was always an injection hub, although people in the past didn't have a choice in the matter.

WILKO JOHNSON, DR FEELGOOD GUITARIST, and stage presence/inspiration for Paul Weller.

Iconic guitarist and Game of Thrones star Wilko Johnson has died aged 75
Updated / Wednesday, 23 Nov 2022 12:04
Wilko Johnson: 1947 - 2022
Wilko Johnson: 1947 - 2022
Iconic guitarist and Game of Thrones star Wilko Johnson has died aged 75 a statement on an official Facebook page for the musician said.

The musician found fame with the 1970s pub-rock band Dr Feelgood. He later played with Ian Dury and also had a successful career with his group The Wilko Johnson Band.

In 2014, he collaborated with The Who's Roger Daltrey on an album called Going Back Home.

A statement on Facebook said: "This is the announcement we never wanted to make, and we do so, on behalf of Wilko's family and the band, with a very heavy heart:

"Wilko Johnson has died. He passed away at home on Monday evening, 21st November 2022.

"Thank you for respecting Wilko’s family’s privacy at this very sad time, and thank you all for having been such a tremendous support throughout Wilko’s incredible life. RIP Wilko Johnson."

Johnson was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer ten years ago but decided against having chemotherapy so that he could go on tour one last time.

Speaking to the BBC at the time he said: "The decision was quite easy - chemotherapy could do no more than extend my life for a relatively short period and I thought I'd just rather enjoy the health that was left to me."

A year later Johnson had a 3kg tumour removed during an 11-hour operation and was declared cancer free.

He played his final live gig last month at London's Shepherd's Bush Empire on 18 October.

Born on Canvey Island in Essex in 1947, he recalled in his autobiography that he had a tough childhood and at aged 16, he was elated to come home from school one day to find his dad had died.

In the book, he also said he found joy in literature but, after realising he was never going to cut it as a poet, he discovered music.

He graduated from Newcastle University before travelling around India, then returned to Essex to work as an English teacher.

Not long after, he formed Dr Feelgood, hugely influential pub-rock pioneers who paved the way for punk.

Whats with Gerry Cott?

He's Bob Shillin's school buddy...Bass with the Boomtown Rats and Solo Artist.
Ah, how the mighty have fallen. "Some a them fell inta Heaven, some a them fell into Hell"
You coulda been someone! 8)
Mrs. Bullet loves telling people I gobbed on the Rats in the Stella in Rathmines in 1978.
Funny how Geldof was anti-establishment...then became it.
Radical for him was wearing red drainpipes.
We'd hang around outside Pat Egan's sound cellar and roar at Geldof calling him a Poseur, he'd stare at his shoes and do a sharp left on to Suffolk Street!

Absolute Legend:
Tributes paid to 'genius guitar player' Jeff Beck

Ozzy Osbourne, Brian May and Jimmy Page are among the musical heavyweights that have paid tribute to "six-stringed warrior" Jeff Beck, following his death aged 78.

Osbourne was among the first to pay tribute to Beck, writing that it had been "such an honour" to know and play with him on his most recent album.

The renowned guitarist, known for his work with The Yardbirds and The Jeff Beck Group, passed away on Tuesday his family said in a statement posted online.

The work produced by The Jeff Beck Group provided the template for the heavy metal explosion of the 1970s, which was adopted by bands such as Black Sabbath.

Writing on Twitter following the announcement, Osbourne wrote: "I can't express how saddened I am to hear of @JeffBeckMusic’s passing.

"What a terrible loss for his family, friends & his many fans.

"It was such an honor to have known Jeff & an incredible honor to have had him play on my most recent album, #PatientNumber9. Long live #JeffBeck."

Patient Number 9 was released in September 2022, and was to be one of Beck’s final musical collaborations.

Osbourne’s bandmate, Tony Iommi, also praised Beck as an "outstanding iconic, genius guitar player" and said there would never be another like him.

Posting on Twitter, Iommi wrote: "I was totally shocked to hear the very sad news of Jeff Beck’s passing.

"Jeff was such a nice person and an outstanding iconic, genius guitar player – there will never be another Jeff Beck.

"His playing was very special & distinctively brilliant! He will be missed. RIP Jeff – Tony."

Queen guitarist Brian May said Beck was "the absolute pinnacle of guitar playing" and a "damn fine human being".

"Gutted, so sad, to hear of Jeff’s passing. He was the Guv’nor. He was inimitable, irreplaceable – the absolute pinnacle of guitar playing," he wrote on Instagram.

"And a damn fine human being. I’m sure I will have a lot to say, but right now …. Just lost for words. Bri. #jeffbeck."

Beck joined The Yardbirds in 1965 – replacing the band’s former guitarist Eric Clapton – following a chance encounter with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page.

Page described Beck as "the six-stringed warrior" and praised his "apparently limitless" musical imagination, in his own online tribute.

"The six stringed Warrior is no longer here for us to admire the spell he could weave around our mortal emotions," Page wrote online.

"Jeff could channel music from the ethereal. His technique unique. His imaginations apparently limitless.

"Jeff I will miss you along with your millions of fans. Jeff Beck Rest in Peace."

David Gilmour of Pink Floyd said he was "devastated" by the death of his "friend and hero".

"I am devastated to hear the news of the death of my friend and hero Jeff Beck, whose music has thrilled and inspired me and countless others for so many years," he wrote on Twitter.

"Polly's and my thoughts go out to his lovely wife Sandra. He will be forever in our hearts."

Whitesnake lead singer David Coverdale called Beck a "unique, electrifying musician", adding on Twitter: "My Sincere Heartfelt Condolences To His Wife, His Family, His Friends & Fans."

Others hailed Beck’s "powerful influence" on themselves and countless others within the musical industry.

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger said music had lost "one of the greatest guitar players in the world".

"With the death of Jeff Beck we have lost a wonderful man and one of the greatest guitar players in the world," he wrote on Twitter, sharing a video of the pair playing together.

"We will all miss him so much."

Genesis lead guitarist Steve Hackett said Beck had been "a powerful influence on myself and many others".

Writing on Twitter following news of Beck’s death, Hackett wrote: "Devastating news about the loss of much loved, influential guitar legend Jeff Beck.

"He made the electric guitar sing…a powerful influence on myself and many others."

Across the pond, US musicians including Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Brian Wilson, Hollywood Vampires, Kiss and ZZ Top also paid their respects to Beck.

Perry described him as "the Salvador Dali of guitar" and said the world was "a poorer place" following his death.

"Jeff Beck was the Salvador Dali of guitar, to see him play was to hear the ultimate 6 string alchemist create magic in a world of its own," he wrote.

"With his passing, the world is a poorer place. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Sandra. We share your sorrow."

Beach Boys singer and co-founder Wilson recalled fond memories of touring with Beck in 2013.

"I’m so sad to hear about Jeff Beck passing. Jeff was a genius guitar player, and me and my band got to see it close up when we toured with him in 2013," he wrote.

"One of the highlights we did was ‘Danny Boy’ – we both loved that song. Love & Mercy to Jeff’s family."

Super-group Hollywood Vampires, comprising of Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and Tommy Henriksen, also paid tribute to Beck online, describing him as a "true innovator".

"We are saddened to hear of the passing of our dear friend and guitar legend Jeff Beck," the band’s account wrote.

"Jeff’s incredible musicianship and passion for guitar has been an inspiration to us all.

"He was a true innovator and his legacy will live on through his music. Rest in peace, Jeff."

Elsewhere, members of Kiss, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, also expressed their shock and disbelief at the news.

The band’s bassist, Gene Simmons, said the news was "heartbreaking".

In a post online, Simmons wrote: "Heartbreaking news to report the late, great Jeff Back has sadly passed.

"No one played guitar like Jeff.

"Please get a hold of the first two Jeff Beck Group albums and behold greatness. RIP."

Kiss’s frontman, Paul Stanley, described Beck as "one of the all time guitar masters".

Posting a picture of Beck on his Twitter, he wrote: "WOW. What awful news.

"Jeff Beck, one of the all time guitar masters has died.

"From The Yardbirds and The Jeff Beck Group on, he blazed a trail impossible to follow. Play on now and forever."

Alice Cooper hailed Beck as being "the greatest guitar player I had ever heard."

In a statement to the PA news agency, Cooper said: "When I was 16 years old, The Spiders, who became the original Alice Cooper band, opened for the Yardbirds.

"That night I experienced the greatest guitar player I had ever heard.

"Half a century later Jeff Beck is still the greatest guitarist, PERIOD – The greatest of all time.

"He was a friend, and there will NEVER be another Jeff Beck. Ever."

All you people, you know the blues got a soul
Well this is a story, a story never been told
Well you know the blues got pregnant
And they named the baby Rock & Roll
Muddy Waters said it, you know the blues got a soul
James Brown said it, you know the blues got a soul
Well the blues had a baby and they named the baby rock & roll
Ray Charles said it, you know the blues got a soul
John Lee Hooker said it, you know the blues got a soul
Well the blues had a baby and they named the baby rock & roll
Otis Redding said it, you know the blues got a soul
Queen Victoria said it, you know the blues got a soul
Well the blues had a baby and they named the baby Rock & Roll

As you irish wud say ....but never boring an told it as it was ....only ting that I wud of chastised her about was that Islamic shite phase she went tru ....I tink she was jus winding up all the irish cnuts
An puttin it up to them ...
Anyway I'm sorry I never met her
We wud bean a great match  :-[

Jaysus, JohnM, she's not even buried yet!

- She lived her life the way she wanted without kowtowing to anyone (no mean feat)
- She made fantastic music across several genres (no mean feat)
- She possessed one of the finest voices Ireland has ever produced.
- She could have rested on her laurels and pumped out 'Greatest Hits' forever and done those "Women's Heart" tours.  Instead she made new music right up to the end.
- She was a feminist icon / a hero to many women (e.g. abortion rights / BLM before BLM existed - e.g. "Black Boys on Mopeds")
- She was ahead of the game with her denunciation of clerical abuse.
- She made an amazing Lemon Drizzle Cake (I might have made that one up  :P )

The film-maker died in Los Angeles, confirmed by Chapman University dean Stephen Galloway, a friend of his wife and former producer Sherry Lansing.

Friedkin was seen as one of the most daring and influential talents of his generation, winning an Oscar for best director for The French Connection in 1972. He was also nominated for The Exorcist in 1974. Both films were nominated for best picture, with The French Connection winning the Oscar.

Friedkin started his big screen career in 1965 with Good Times, a comedy starring Sonny and Cher. While the film received mostly negative reviews, Friedkin later said: “I’ve made better films than Good Times but I’ve never had so much fun.”

It was 1971’s crime thriller The French Connection that brought him his first real hit, a commercial and critical success, since viewed as one of the greatest films ever made. Friedkin has spoken about the studio’s lack of belief in the film and the surprise at its success. “It came out and immediately went through the roof like a rocket,” he said in 2021. “We don’t know why but sometimes that happens.”

The film remains an important influence on many of the directors to follow Friedkin. David Fincher, Steven Spielberg and Akira Kurosawa have all cited it as having an impact on their work.

It was followed up by another hit, an adaptation of William Peter Blatty’s horror novel The Exorcist. It became a blockbuster success, making over $425m worldwide from a $12m budget. In a Guardian interview, Friedkin claims he was “fired about five times” during production yet a reportedly troubled set didn’t stop the film from being named the first horror movie to ever receive a best picture nomination at the Oscars.

Martin Scorsese named it one of the scariest films ever made. He claimed it to be “as utterly horrifying as it was the day it came out”.

It led to a franchise as well as a TV series (a legacy sequel also comes out this year). Friedkin confessed to never having watched anything that followed.

Star Ellen Burstyn paid tribute to Friedkin in a statement to Deadline. “My friend Bill Friedkin was an original; smart, cultured, fearless and wildly talented,” she said. “On the set, he knew what he wanted, would go to any length to get it and was able to let it go if he saw something better happening. He was undoubtedly a genius.”

His next film, 1977’s action thriller Sorcerer, was initially seen as a critical and commercial disappointment yet has since been re-evaluated. The adaptation of Georges Arnaud’s novel The Wages of Fear has been cited as Friedkin’s favourite of his films. “I have no idea why it failed,” he said to the Guardian. “No seer has come to me with the reason. A lot of people expected from the title that it would be some sort of followup to The Exorcist, which it isn’t. It came out in cinemas the same week as Star Wars, I’ve heard that too. I think it wasn’t what people expected to see. And when that happens they get disappointed.”

His 1980 thriller Cruising, starring Al Pacino as a cop going undercover in New York’s gay S&M scene, led to controversy at the time with gay rights protestors unhappy with the portrayal. The production led to protests in the city and while the film was poorly received at the time – it was nominated for three Golden Raspberry awards – it was later given a re-appreciation. “I never intended Cruising to be any kind of statement about gay life,” Friedkin said in 2017. “To me, it was an exotic background for a murder mystery that had never been seen in a mainstream film.”

Friedkin’s later films included Jade, Rules of Engagement, Bug and Killer Joe starring Matthew McConaughey. His most recent film was the 2017 documentary The Devil and Father Amorth.

His final work will premiere at this year’s Venice film festival, the legal thriller The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial. The film stars Kiefer Sutherland and Jason Clarke and is based on Herman Wouk’s 1953 play.

Friedkin often spoke about the decline of American cinema, criticising superhero films and other studio blockbusters. “The whole idea of the art film, or experimental films, receiving an audience in theaters has virtually disappeared from the United States and so many other countries, except in fringe areas,” he said in a 2015 interview. “And when I was growing up it was a staple of cinema.”

Tributes have started to come in from figures in Hollywood. Actor Elijah Wood called him “a true cinematic master whose influence will continue to extend forever”. The Black Phone director Scott Derrickson also wrote that it was “an honor” to have lengthy chats with Friedkin and that The Exorcist and Sorcerer are two of “the greatest films ever made”.

Edgar Wright shared an Instagram tribute. “Friedkin was a blazing talent, a true visionary,” he wrote. “For once, it’s not hyperbole to say his groundbreaking techniques left an indelible mark on the industry.” Eli Roth also called him “One of the most impactful directors of all time”.

Sinead O’Connor ‘gave us strength’, says Magdalene laundry survivor (https://www.independent.ie/style/celebrity/celebrity-news/sinead-oconnor-gave-us-strength-says-magdalene-laundry-survivor/a1127628639.html)

Quote
A woman who suffered abuse in one of the same institutions as Sinead O’Connor said the singer “made Ireland a different place” by speaking out on church and state exploitation.  O’Connor spoke openly about abuse she faced in a Magdalene laundry as a teenager, where she spent more than a year.

<snip>

In 2022, a Journey Stone was unveiled by survivors of the Magdalene Laundries at St Stephen’s Green in Dublin.  The Journey Stone memorial was designed to commemorate the suffering of the women who were incarcerated in Magdalene laundries and similar institutions.  Ms Sullivan said O’Connor was integral to bringing the memorial to fruition.

She said: “Sinead came along, she done a charity single for us so we could get a monument. So, the monument was just thrown on the side, so I decided that I’d turn it into a Journey Stone, and it’s in the little museum in St Stephen’s Green.  “Sinead’s name never comes up much on that, but only for Sinead that Journey Stone wouldn’t be there today.  “It was for all survivors and she was very happy about that.”

Bullit Magdalin Laundries were set up as stand alone Laundries but most Convents had Laundries attached like they had Kitchens .I helped research Highbrasil in Kilmainham and if you ever get a Job from there the address for the Side Gate is the Laundry .

Highbrasil was an ancient Keltic religious self contained settlement .Highbrasil is named after it as when it was the Little Sisters of the Poor .The Nuns lived in a self contained unit .Roth Abbey to the rear of it was full of Allotments and they grew their own food and kept a few cows  ,The houses built adjacent to Suir Road are built over a Grave Yard where Nuns were buried and the Laundry was to the side .Girls sent to Magdalin Laundries were sent there to work in the Laundries Girls sent to Convents often worked in the Laundry or Kitchen or house staff .The Irony of Laundries was that the Girls sent there were usually deemed to be sinners and John Charles thought working with Soapy Water and Bleach might rub off their sins .Sinead O Connor may of worked in the or a Laundry in a Convent but she was not in a Magdalin Laundry .

It is not Semantics .There are people who were imprisoned in those institutions who could not get taken seriously when they spoke out .O Connor playing Wordgames never helped them .She was on a See Me buzz .

My Mam was put into a children's home at the age of 4, and moved around the system by the authorities until the age of 17.
My uncle Bernard was a civil servant and used his connections to get her released, otherwise, like a lot of other women they died and were buried on site.

Synopsis
Framed by a present-day prologue and epilogue, the play is set in 1963 in a convent laundry at St. Paul's Home for Penitent Women in Killmacha, Ireland. Eclipsed explores the practice of making pregnant and unwed Irish mothers work as 'penitents' in church-run laundries. A belting summer rain did not deter the citizens of Galway from filling the Town Hall Theatre to capacity for the opening night production of local playwright, poet, and artist Patricia Burke Brogan’s play Eclipsed, a drama which provides a glimpse into a hidden chapter of this island nation’s rich history. Under the hand of Caroline Fitzgerald (former Assistant Artistic Director of Dublin’s Abbey Theatre) the seamless ensemble work was vividly supported by the scenic and lighting talents of Tomás Fitzpatrick and Michael Byrne, respectively, to create a beautiful and haunting visual poem.

The play began as a young American girl searching for her birth mother arrived in the faded washroom of the St. Paul convent laundry. As drapes of deep crimson rose, the story of her mother, Brigit Murphy, and four other laundresses came to life within the cage-like shelves encircling the laundry’s gray concrete walls. In actual fact, until only recently in Ireland, young mothers who gave birth out of wedlock were committed to and imprisoned in convent-laundries set up by the church to give them food, shelter and “spiritual care.” Their babies taken away at birth, the women were to remain penitent within the confines of the laundries for the rest of their lives—themselves and their children forever removed from social interaction with their families and community. The laundresses in this play struggle to be reunited with their children and to survive the drudgery and oppression of their suffocating, colorless environs. [End Page 219]

The characters in this drama were strongly and believably portrayed by an ensemble of eight women. The four laundresses try to help each other out of their misery by sharing whatever scraps of memory they have of the sights, tastes and smells of the outside world. Their delicate support structure is stretched to its limits when Brigit (played with a palpable inner drive by Silé Nic Chonaonaigh) attacks the girlish pipe-dreams of the flighty-headed Mandy (Sinead Murphy—whose heavenly singing highlighted moments of the play). The women worked together in a group effort to lift the distraught girl’s spirit in a scene that juxtaposed riotous visual humor with a sense of mercy and pathos, as Mandy was married to her idol, Elvis Presley—who was represented by a male mannequin adorned with colorful laundry items. The play portrayed the ability of the human spirit to rise above any individual or institutional attempt at its destruction.

The penitents are watched over by Mother Victoria (played with cold imperviousness by Bernadette McKenna), an authoritative elder who holds rigidly to the letter, if not the spirit, of her religious convictions. Assisting her is Sister Virginia (Cathy Belton), a novice who sees the injustice being done under the blind eye of the church and searches for understanding, compassion and guidance from a God who is unable or unwilling to help those who call on Him. Sister Virginia is the author’s eye into the world of the play, and her experiences mirror the playwright’s real-life experience as a novice. Sister Virginia’s attempt to write to the Holy Fathers for help is intercepted by the Mother Superior who, seemingly devoid of true compassion, reprimands the novice by telling her that help and understanding can only be achieved through “blind faith” in the will of God, which is to say, the church hierarchy. Thus, in the production the perception of imprisonment widened as the audience realized the key-keepers were unknowingly captive to their rigid belief system.

While Mother Victoria ruled over her laundry with iron-clad authority, the overriding paternal control of the church was symbolically represented throughout the play by an ever-present headless mannequin draped with a Bishop’s crimson soutane—the only colorful constant in this drab world of blacks, whites and grays. The only other colors arrived from the outside world...

Sixto Rodriguez (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sixto_Rodriguez), who lived in obscurity as his music career flamed out early in the U.S. only to find success in South Africa and a stardom he was unaware of, died Tuesday in Detroit. He was 81.  Rodriguez's legacy would take off back home after the singer and songwriter became the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary “Searching for Sugar Man.”  His death was announced on the Sugarman.org website and confirmed Wednesday by his granddaughter, Amanda Kennedy.  He died following a short illness, according to his wife, Konny Rodriguez, 72.

A 2013 Associated Press story referred to Rodriguez as “the greatest protest singer and songwriter that most people never heard of.”

Loved that 60s sound that he got on the first album. Was chatting online, with one of his ex producers a few years ago and he said he was going to get Sixto into the studios to record a new album. Never heard much about it but I think it was another flop. RIP Sixto…a very humble man.

Robbie sit down and digest this .The Bible says I AM the lord thy God do not place false gods before me The important relevant bit of that is I AM .God is consciousness therefore the I in I am is God as in You are your own God there is no other God head .We only ever call on a God Head when things we cannot cope with need explanation .

Friends wasn't funny, it was very bland.

I had to laugh at the news where they made out he had such a hard life being famous and rich, I think they got 1 million dollars per episode each. money isn't everything but come on, millions of people have lives of pure misery working in sweatshops for 10 cent a day, 7 days a week, he was depressed because he was rich and famous.

A troubled soul@ Matthew Perry's Vicodin addiction:
While shooting 'Fools Rush In' with Salma Hayek, Perry had a jet ski accident and was given Vicodin for the pain.

He liked the Vicodin so much that he decided to get 40 more pills delivered to his house. However, after 18 months, he was taking 55 Vicodin pills a day.

Later, when he was 26, he went to rehab, which ended his Vicodin addiction. However, his addiction to drinking persisted until 2001.

Almost died after his colon burst from opioid abuse:
In his memoir, Perry recollected that he started taking methadone, on top of cocaine and Xanax, when he was 30.

By 2019, when Perry was 49, he nearly died after his colon burst from opioid overuse and he was in a coma for two weeks. He even spent five months in the hospital. In January 2022, Perry had his 14th surgery related to opiate abuse.

By then, he believed he had not slept more than four hours a night in his whole life and was full of regret about his past relationships.
