Title: Dublin passengers
Post by: taxi1990 on July 06, 2021, 12:14:31 pm
Why is it the ones from less well off areas like Crumlin, the inner city, clondalkin are great tippers and the ones from the affluent areas in Dublin are dirt mean and wouldn't give you a 20 cent tip?

The middle class from the country are usually mean enough as well. The real Dubs are by far my favorite passengers, they will always chat away to you as well.

The so-called affluent usually got there by hook or crook. They instinctively believe that everyone is as dishonest as them.
Working-class see a person doing a fair days work for a fair days pay.

The same people still tip waitstaff, hairdressers, etc. The affluent choosing to pay by card and run.

Good point, I always get the impression that rich middle class Dubs think im ripping them off in some way. I remember one night I dropped 2 home(mansion of a holiday home with 2 cars worth the guts of 200 k in the drive), it was 7 euro, the meter went back to 6 euro, you know the way the meters are designed. The younger guys starts questioning me about it, "hey it said 6 euro" etc...

Now I can't say they are all like that but I can only remember 1 rich middle class Dub who gave me a really decent tip. Its really the middle class rich from Dublin who are tight, the working class Dub's who are rich will always give a decent tip in my experience, they didn't forget where they came from.

I brought 3 middle class dubs mid 20's, to the train station lately, they were worried they would miss the train and were relieved that I went out of my way to get them there in time, fare was 9:60. handed a tenner and yer man looking at me for the change. Then my next fare was 4 lads from Ballyfermot, ages around 17 or 18 id say, 15 euro fare, they gave me a 10 euro tip.

Its always the one who have money want to haggle.

Had a couple to come my car at Dublin Airport (when I was working!) asked how much was it to Dalkey,I gave a rough price and said "it was on the meter". He wanted to haggle ,"will you do it for such n such"
No says I, its on the meter.

Lots of tutting and sighing. Anyway they got in brought them to their destination, which was one big fuck off size of a house , with a Porsche and a Merc in the driveway.

Said it all..........

Then ye have the other side of it. I flute around some days outta boredom in me gaf and stuff, get out for a drive and so forth. Last week picked up a man in his 60's in town. American, non tippers usually as ye know. Serpentine avenue from Baggott street, 7.60 or so on the clock. Gives me a 20, hang on to it he says. The aul tar everyone with the same brush and all that. But I know what you mean, when certain folks get in you kinda know what to expect but there's always the few that surprise. Thankfully. Puts a bit of faith in humanity.

I sometimes get tips off Americans. Got 20 euro for a 7 euro fare off a northern Irish guy one night, couldn't believe that one. As you said you cant tar them all with the one brush.

Remember the economic crash? The pax were told to negotiate as it was a free market, and some did. If you were sitting on a rank they would go car to car to get the cheapest price to Balbriggan or Bray.

You'd accept if it suited you, or invariably told the drunken prick/s to pay the meter fare or walk.

The same pax never had a problem paying  a tenner into a nightclub, 7 quid for a pint (numerous) but haggle the price of a fare.
Fuck right off.

My mate from the Ivy House used to get cases of Vodka from prospective suppliers. All the names you've never heard of.
All of it went into shots.

When the marketing lads came around to actually make a sale, he'd say they didn't go for it but I'll keep you in mind.

Then on to the next gullible supplier.

And publicans want our support?

You'd tip a lounge boy/girl, but never a barman. Students, or kids working in say - The Goblet pub, are paid around a fiver an hour. The owner knowing they earn tips. And they keep their mouth shut, allegedly.
