Title: IBAN Discrimination
Post by: Rat Catcher on January 31, 2022, 02:24:19 pm
It seems Govt (via the Central Bank) can force every organisation in the State to accept my German bank account... except NTA.

Just had a call looking for an Irish bank account number for my motor tax rebate. I told the lady that's not good enough so she's gonna consult her supervisor and get back to me!

Yes, N26.

Two reasons, Ken. First there's no fees and second, they're incredibly efficient compared to BOI. BOI and SCA doesn't work, ever! Try putting a grand on your Revolut to spend up in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland... you might get the required code code 56 days later. With N26 it'd be instant but it's also unnecessary because their exchange rate is similar to Revolut anyway i.e. significantly less than the thieving cunts in BOI. Another interesting one... I generally fill up in Certa with my N26 card these days. As soon a I set the max fill at €80 my smart telephone beeps and displays a notification that I've paid €80 to Certa, as soon as I hang up the filling nozzle my smart phone beeps and tells me I've received a refund of €x.xx from Certa i.e. before I've got back in the car. The next day both transactions are amalgamated.  Mrs. Catcher used her/our BOI card last Tuesday in Certa and the initial €80 authorisation is still pending as I type.

Bank of Ireland transfers are unbelievably slow. Their app is improving but not quickly enough.

N26 is typical of German efficiency. Every transaction generates an instant notification on your smartphone so you know the second you've been paid by Free Now, Bolt and the Dole and you'd know instantly if an unauthorised transaction processed which combined with the facility to instantly freeze your card adds a layer of security, I guess.

I believe they're cunts to work for though, very high staff turnover even at senior level.

So just to be clear RC are ya saying you've managed to get Bolt and Freenow to pay your wages to N26?

Yes. Bolt was no bother. I just gave them the German IBAN when I (re)joined last week and got my first week's wages yesterday. When I first phoned Free Now to change over the computer said no but when I followed up with an email complaining about IBAN discrimination it was done within minutes. I had a similar issue with Axa's computer saying no, again resolved after a grumbling email. Vodafone was the only other outfit I had a problem with. Their online/phone system will only accept UK/Irish IBANs but they can take others in store... or you can use the debit card online for the DD payments, I did the latter. No problem getting the dole into N26 either but you do need a verified PSC to switch your payment bank.

Don’t N26 now charge 3% on lodgements through your laser card

Dunno. I've never used that service, I just use it as a current account with wages and dole paid in, there's no fees for those or for spending with the card or for transfers to other accounts. I know they charge for ATM withdrawals (after one or two free per month) and I don't think there's any way of lodging cash/cheques.

Can you explain again please the part where you put a grand and you get a code 56 days later? What’s that about. I have revolut and i find it Ok although i have never used it abroad.

It's not an issue with Revolut. It's a BOI issue - although I'm told PTSB is at least as bad. Topping up small amounts is grand but once you go over a couple of ton you need a code that's supposed to be sent to your smartphone to verify the transaction. With BOI the code never arrives. It's the same if you make any internet purchase over a couple of ton. Revolut isn't without it's issues though, FBD won't take Revolut cards and on some occasions nobody can take their cards i.e. their whole system crashes in some way or other.

I'm not suggesting N26 is best for everybody. I just find it very efficient for my needs. As JM points out, it has its limitations and the high turnover of senior personnel hardly inspires confidence.

I guess the Irish banks specialise in gross incompetence so it's unlikely their top men or female men will go anywhere, at least not until they're found out in some spectacular fashion. It's amazing how mismanaged our firms can be... for a country with such great education and technical expertise.

Thanks Stephen, I'm with PTSB and it works just fine fer me as I do very limited banking but only to pay by card or get paid by sum-up or FN.
Also I have the ambassador circle K 'play or park' game tag which saves 4c per liter of fuel and half price car washes.

I think it's about 18 notes per quarter.

€72/year... only €23 less than Motor tax. N26 is free - at least for now!

I thought it was 18 per quarter but I can't remember the last time I saw a fee on my statement ??
I had a google off PTSB current account fees, it would give 'War and Peace' a run fer it's money !
