Will the government or NTA do anything or will it blow over?
-
Can''t see anything happening soon. The middle-classes are worried about going on their holidays via the airport and the price of diesel for their SUV's. The Govt and the NTA will be firefighting those issues for awhile.
-
There are plenty of taxis....just not 24hours a day on every single street in the city. The next downturn will sort out the demand problem.
-
Will the government or NTA do anything or will it blow over?
People calling for an uber style ride hailing app...cannot see that ever happening here..Well it better not Hallen ffs

Tight fcukers are looking for it alright. But apparently the majority of the Irish public don't want it, I'd say it's a lot of Irish peoples fear of foreigners that is the cause for that.
-
We have three Uber-style apps...one is called Uber..
-
Will the government or NTA do anything or will it blow over?
Will anything be done to solve the problem of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs closing at virtually the same time?
-
Will the government or NTA do anything or will it blow over?
Thousands more cars, but half the road space. Will the people driving to work the next day agree with 10 thousand extra taxis plying for hire in front of them just to cover their rent?
-
We've bean talkin bout this for weeks ...I taut it was clear
How is ther a lack of taxis?
The only apes saying that ther are a lack of taxis are apps that want to make more money and want as many taxis on the road as possible so they can have the upper hand
Taxi rental companies that want to increase demand for ther taxis so the can put up the price up and put more cars on the road
Passangers at que at the airport who have to watch empty taxis leaving empty because off the DAA and ther greed and inefficiency
Piss heads and pukers who can't get a lift between 1-2 am fri-sat night which will always occur because of surge in demand
And drivers don't want to deal with it anymore cause they learned durin the chinese plaugue they can work 3 apps during the day and work the streets and bring respectable sober polite customers to work an the airport all day long without getting abused or have to clean excretion off the Back seat an deal wit runners
Then you have journalists who will promote the false narrative
Because it sells newspapers and Joe Duffy on €2000 a day to
Listing to morons who only see ther blinkered self serving world view because ther unable to put themselves in others shoes cause theve the IQ of a bleedin rocking horse >:(

Etc etc
Can't see the nta/garda changing rules for a couple of influencers on a Saturday night out side the grayson

There is no lack of taxis just lack of Intelligence .Pulled over in the Rain last night "Hi is this cab for Dervilla ? No I said but I am available .Dervilla was waiting for Omar in the rain .I said why you waiting I charge exactly the same price and will accept card ."No its Ok i Will wait " Probably university educated to know to wait in the rain for a product that is right in front of you .The sooner we all accept card and put an end to the suffering of these Fucking Morons .Then add in those plastic dollies that mean if you stop to drop or pick up anything behind you grinds to a halt as there is no room to overtake ..I might never ever see Merrion Row again after 9PM its a gridlocked Coral for moronic muppetts .The Problem is restricted access by design .to frustrate private motorists out of their cars .GET A GUN .

Uber is on the way and will be legal within 3yr
-
You have more to be worried about from thousands more legal taxi drivers than Uber.
In the US Uber and Lyft can't get drivers so they have the same problems as the taxi industry. They thought they were different but it turns out they're not.
-
Lad on the Wireless this morning saying no Trade no Town he was complaining that blocking access to car parks ans streets is forcing people to shop on line or to out of town shopping centers and he recons the Pubs and Hotels are pushing for more pedestrianisation but when there are no tourists and the Natives have been reprogrammed to stay out of town they will of made their own business anemic .He recons Politicians love Big Policies as it gives different vested interests more opportunity to grease certain political parties the problem with big projects is one mans opportunity is another mans downfall and nobody sees the flaw until its too late .Witherspoons Hotel no drop off or pick up is a simple example of no forward planning .I wonder will they put Bike bollards on Thomas Street out side Paddy Masseys ?

Why do you say that?
Anyone know why they never were allowed operate here the way they do in some other countries?
-
They don't operate in the Uk with unlicenced drivers. They're hacks.
If you wanna be a taxi driver in Ireland it's relatively easy to get on the road. The plates cost next to nothing. If you can pass the test and get reasonable insurance you're in.

They will probably make the entry test easier here id say.
How much is insurance for new entrants these days?
-
Dunno but a friend of my Brothers got a quote fo 3500.The test is doable if you put the work in.
Why would ya wanna dive into taxi driving when there are so many better opportunities out there. Its a job for oddballs who don't want the responsibility of driving the luas/train or a truck.Suits me fine.

Taxi Drivers' representatives Jim Waldron and the late Joe Heron (RIP) warned NTA of the shortage way back when the SPSVDL renewal fee was increased to €250.00 with both repeatedly drawing attention to "thousands" of drivers vacating the trade to pursue more lucrative vocational opportunities. In fact, Jim identified the cost of entry as being prohibitive.
The dispatch firms took a while to catch up but it seems that they now agree with Jim and the late Joe (RIP)... as it seems does the general public.
Maybe NTA should consider removing requirements to sit entrance examinations for Limousine drivers with a view to promoting provision of a UK/Spanish style "Uber" service i.e. a service provided by appropriately licensed private hire drivers utilising better quality vehicles?
-
What if the untested limo lads brought the mourners to the wrong graveyard? Can't be having that.
-
Unlikely. It doesn't seem to be an issue in the UK or Spain... and I'm sure anyone who has used Uber (for example) within those jurisdictions will agree that it offers a pleasant alternative to public hire taxis. In my experience the cars are pretty new Supurbs or Mercedes and the drivers ahere to high standards of personal hygiene, wear a collar and tie, provide assistance with luggage and (more often than not) even open the door for their clients.
-
I fully expect the industry to be torpedoed but I'm not certain how it might happen. All we can do is reduce our debt so we can live on the dole when the next downturn happens. This time I'm ready...last time I wasn't so let them do what they want.
-
I guess it's desireable to discourage over-reliance on the trade. Drivers up above in Dublin, for example, are finding it difficult to navigate traffic at certain times and/or in certain areas. I guess all alternatives are worthy of consideration.

Just listening to Newstalk there a few minutes ago, some woman saying the lack of taxis can lead to similar attacks and rapes as what happened that teenager in Offaly in 2016. we are to blame for everything.

Balderdash and piffle. The girl was out jogging. 10,000 extra taxis driven by mostly sub-continental men won't save one person from being attacked or raped.
10,000 extra Garda patrolling jogging paths might prevent one.

What happened to that schoolgirl was awful but:
17 yr old schoolgirl goes drinking in small country town (parents/bartender?), gets separated from 'friends' (WhatsApp?), and gets into car with 4 strangers. Guys were probably driving around looking for a victim (Gardai?).
But yeah taxis are the problem!
If taxis were viable in that town, how come nobody worked a taxi or local area hackney licence?
P.S. The schoolgirl is blameless but taxis are not to blame either.

One Irish, Conor Byrne, the only one who pled guilty, at the very last possible moment, just before she had to take the stand, and a new jury was assembled, shaved 2 years off his sentence. He was the only one that the girl addressed by name at the end, appreciating his plea, telling him that he had done a terrible thing that would stay with her forever, but she hoped that he would be able to turn his life around. She forgave him, but not the others. Strong girl.
-
The Majority of women that are sexually assaulted have drink taken the Majority of rapists exploit this .Solution close pubs .Its sort of logical .Closing pubs would also solve any lack of taxis .No shortage during lockdown .Less pubs less drink less liver and other health problems so less Hospital overcrowding .Womens Aid should stick to the FACTS and call for Pubs to be Closed or Women to be barred .

-
I was in a cab all night no problem. It must be a slow news day when a digital rag talks taxis.
No Tram stories
No Dublin Bus stories
No DART stories
Why?
They generate advertising revenue, that's the lifeblood of digital redtops.
-
Plenty of taxis if you know where to look.

+1
Tapping THE app' when leaving a venue with 15,000 other punters expecting to be singled out by a taxi driver is never really going to work.

I got an email from FN saying that when I get a BEV to contact the guy and he would "escalate" it to their EV team...I think I'll run him down in the BEV for using the term escalate out of context.

Talking to Rialto Driver he had an EV on Order got a delivery date for September .He rang the Salesman this morning and was informed the status of his order is provisional as they have not had conformation of their order yet from the Factory .They were due for conformation 3 months before delivery .
-
I don't mind waiting if it's a guaranteed delivery date for a vehicle but it's the constant price increases that are making them a shit buy IMO.You have to remember you are also in the market against people who used to buy Beemers and Mercs in that price bracket of 40/50k.They'll pay anything regardless of price increases.
Also I'd have to upgrade to Comp on me insurance so that's another €300 per year to factor in.I'd be broke..
Met a chap in an new MG5 and he says he's putting in €6 worth of leccy a day.Me Prius us barely using €10/12 on a long shift. The advantage of these EVs are being eroded by the leccy price increases.By buying one you're betting that petrol/Diesel is gonna keep going up compared to leccy prices and that's not a sure bet IMO.
Ah what happened to the little bit of optimism I used to have..
-
Rialto was looking at the VW .I wonder if the Garages are less interested in selling to the trade as it involves complex paper work with credit then deducting the Grant later when you get it and having to re draw your terms and Conditions .Orlath and Dave from the nice Gaffs behind Big Dommos Flats will pay cash or have Credit from the main dealers sorted .Not much use having a delivery date in September if you are near your expirt date and have to wait till Valentines day to get the car .Problem is used motors are getting expensive even though the Yen has crashed part work Jap imports are pricey .I suppose what you save on the currency you pay for in shipping .
-
Best we(yous)can hope for is another extension on vehicle age limits..Setting aside that I'd benefit from it it's the only logical solution to the problem of sourcing new and secondhand vehicles without putting taxis off the road and forcing current hybrid and potential EV owners into cheaper secondhand diesels.
Good compromise all round IMO.
-

Eamo has ruled out any further extension .He said it only encourages dirty diesels and the Customers deserve better for their coin .I think Eamo is happy enough with the taxi crisis it might restrict movement get drinkers and diners to remain in their constituencies and then walkatise the city center for tourists .From Kildare Street to Patrick Street its virtually carless and Dame Street to Kevin Street .Only Georges Street has no restrictions except for Bikie Bollards .
-
I don't recall Eamo ruling anything out Erm.Seems awful wasteful to he scrapping vehicles in better condition than mine to buy the rejects that were shipped halfway across the world on diesel cargo ships from Japan.Hardly an environmentally sound plan.
I predict this pro leccy policy will be watered down once the grant money starts to get scarce as the budget tightens up.
Some bloke on the telly said last week our carbon emissions won't be dramatically reduced even if every vehicle in the state went fully electric. It's all loada bollix as DMG would say when he pauses his meter..
-
Eamo was asked in the Dail last week by one of the Marxists about extending the age limit he said NO .
-
It's still early days. You're referring to the ten year rule not more special extensions.
-

YES .But think of the Contradiction handing out Power Coins to drivers to renew electric and at the same time handing out stay of execution certs to the older more emissions creating vehicles .But its politics so it probably makes sense to somebody somewhere .I wonder if they replaced the Roofie with the proposed new roofie how much fuel they could save .Is Mr Anderson still the Chief Engineer with the Taxi thingey ?Grand Prix cars have smaller rear wings to slow them down than the area of the Roofie .
