The Aviva doesn't take cash. Punters got free beer and pizza as internet broke and card machines didn't work.
Hmmm ::fds Would this be a precedent for free taxis if the mobile phone network went down?

NO by law the customer is obliged to pay the fare .See the Rats Post .

Have a read of that by a CCPC regulator.
I reckon someone could get in, saying they only have card and 'is that ok?'. You say 'sure' and that's a contract. And then refuse to pay if the internet was down at the end of the journey.

No there is a Contract that exists pre journey .The Customer is obliged to pay the fare .That is the Contract entered into .You may agree to take card but if The card does not work .The Original Contract you bring they Pay their Fare is in force .No Passenger can legally enter a taxi and not understand the fare MUST be paid .
What happened at the Aviva was a PR stunt .Im sure the Caterers are insured .Yesterdays Game was hopefully the first of many so handing out a few pints and burgers will be small change .Didnt read how long the Tills were down I can reboot our router in about 3 Minutes .This is probably a no story story .Half a dozen pints and a big mack were free .

The caterer says it lasted 2 hours and they're blaming SumUp! Says the SumUp problem was not just the Aviva.

Devil's Advocate:
Contact 1: it's cash and card as the guy gets in.
Contract 2: driver agrees to take card so now it's card only.
At end of journey, driver can't fulfill contact 2. Passenger says that's not his problem and walks off saying call me when your machine works. Contract 1 doesn't automatically kick in - that's history as it was superseded by contract 2.
-
SUM UP ?Levy UK + Ireland, who were supplying food and drink services at the event, said the technical issue was not the fault of Aviva Stadium, but lay with the payment provider, a company they said was called Sumup.
Interesting My sumup went down could not take a fare .I thought it was my phone .App would not open gave me a screen to add e mail and password but would still not open .About the same time as the problem in the Aviva .

No only one legal contract exists .YOU MUST PAY YOUR FARE .Drivers offer options where possible .I take Sterling or Dollars or Euro or Card .

The law of the land…If you agree to use something…then you must pay for it!
-
Agreed. But the crux of the problem *might* be that both of you agreed to card only* at the start of the journey. What if the punter insists on card as agreed and the broken card machine is not his problem...
*
- can I pay by card?
- yes

You say yes you can pay by card if it works .Tell him a lot of CARDS do not work .

I'll be installing a notice in my car stating cards accepted subject to data connectivity availability before I go to work in September.

Hardly worth the hassel as it's so seldom an issue these days.

Did you read the story above - looks like SumUp went offline for a few hours on Saturday evening!
It probably won't be a big problem but the scumbags will figure out the deadzones in their neighbourhood & try to exploit it.
-
Punter - Can I pay by card?
Driver - You can try, if it doesn't work its cash or Revolut. 8)
