Title: Sumup really pissing me off
Post by: silverbullet on April 17, 2023, 10:46:02 pm
I've no idea what causes the App to not connect with the terminal, but I feel it's going to cost me money when some card-paying pleb can't tap or use a pin on the damn thing.

Last night I was dropping a punter to Clongriffin, and on arrival, the terminal started acting up. He suggested force-stop, which I did but no use.

Then he said to switch off your phone, wait then turn it back on. Finally, the damn thing worked.

The meter fare came to 21.40 but by the time the App' worked, it was reading 30+, not on my good man.

Any suggestions on more reliable terminals?

Mine has worked perfectly for the past few yers (without incident) ....since  ratti pointed out that you allow your phone to connect with the card reader without touching the power button....
In the past week that has changed ...I've had several connection problems within the past week or so .... oops

i had the basic sumup for ages but i usta have agro gettin it to fire up. i did'nt know whether to turn it on first or let the app wake it up. you turn your phone bluetooth on and it connects to the bleedin car sound system insteada the sumup device. what i shudda been doing is turn the car off so there was no conflict and then let the app wake the device up. i ended up gettin the standalone 3g device but that sometimes acts the maggot so i retained the old sumup yoke and use that as a back up.

Yeah, I found Sumup increasingly unreliable and you never knew if it was gonna work or not.  So a few weeks ago, I switched to a Square Reader (https://squareup.com/ie/en/hardware/reader) and it has worked like a charm since.  Commission is about the same as Sumup.

Downsides for me are that it's a tiny little thing with no screen so you might get suspicious customers not paying because they can't see a number on a screen.  But it hasn't happened yet.  Battery is small so you need to keep a USB cable in the taxi just in case whereas Sumup seemed to last forever.  And it pays out daily instead of weekly but maybe there's a setting I can change?

But it's reliable and quick to approve cards!

I had trouble getting money out of Paddy power a few weeks ago and our kid had trouble collecting Grand national winnings .It seems under Money laundering Legislation cards or Not Present devices have a limitation on payouts .It might be that you need to reset the machine or reconfirm your identity .If it cant pay out it might not let you process a card .i had trouble with a Sum up its about 8 years old I disconnected it from my Phone scrubbed the Id and re entered the details .Neve had another problem since .

That's very fancy. All good ideas.

I have changed the IBAN and BIC to another ROI account, I wonder would this have a bearing.

What happens if they've to stick their card in and type their pin? Is there room to stick a card into it? You know the way sometimes you've to do it in a shop or whatever when ur paying card, I think it's a security thing or something.  Sometimes I'd be getting a packet of skins, sorry a lighter, ye know, a euro or something but you've to still insert the thing anyway.

I have one of them as a backup.
It pays instantly onto a card they send you,so it doesn't go near a bank account.
Only problem is that the card let me down too many times,by being locked up,and you need to call their 'customer service' to unfreeze it.

I had PIN problems with a sumup terminal a while back, I just bought a new one fer 20 or 30 Euro, delivered the next day.

I do sometimes find that on first use of the terminal some nights it can be slow to start up, which was easily sorted by opening the sumup app on my phone and keeping it on in the background.

I'll try that too. One bonus with Sumup being bad is the younger punters all have Revolut, so, straight into your account. Happy days.

My stereo runs off Bluetooth so I can listen to Spotify. I sometimes have an OBD-II connection too. If I also have a Sumup reader I'm guessing it might slow it down considerably.

No idea, I just listen to Classic hits 4fm on the radio every night that I'm working.

Agreed, I always say to customers; "It will say 'the cost' in the top right hand corner and just tap it".
I always give them the printed taxi receipt aswell, just to put their mind at rest.

I also hate wires trailed over the cab anywhere, I just have 1 very neat phone charger.

Sumup works fine fer me and has done since Bill (RIP) from FN set it up fer me back in 2018.

I had an issue with the reader not accepting inserted cards, simple solution, dumped it and bought a new one fer about 30 Euro. Easiest thing to set up, it actually sets its self up.  And I kept the old one as a back-up.

Commission 1.42%.  yay

Needs charging every 3 months.  yippee

I'm not sure how often they pay out, but just checked my bank account and all last weekends funds are in.

Thank you so much for reaching Square Support. My name is Pamela. I hope you're having a wonderful day. It will be my pleasure to assist you today.

I understand how important it is for you and your business to process payments using Square. Let me tell you what happens in this situation.

Card payment acceptance with the Square Reader is currently available in the US, Canada, UK, France, Spain, Australia, and Japan. We are currently unable to support card payment processing in your country yet, due to the lack of corporate presence of many industry-wide banks in these territories. Since we depend on partnerships with these banks to extend underwriting to our customers, we’re unable to offer payment processing in your country at this time.

We’re working to bring payment processing to more markets and will keep you posted. In the meantime, feel free to download Square Point of Sale from the Apple App Store or Google Play to record payments and create receipts for your customers. If you currently accept credit cards with a card terminal or plan to in the future, you can easily record your card payments in Square Point of Sale for a complete view of all your sales in Square Dashboard.

I wish I could help you more, but my hands are tied in this situation, as Square is not available in your country yet. Please, if you have any further questions, or if there is anything else I can help you with, let me know. It would be my pleasure to assist you.

Kindest regards,

There was an update last week and when I went to use the app it went a little berserk on me,had to update it with the passenger sitting in the car...and then it wanted me to log in..ffs I haven't logged in for fukin years, couldn't remember my password, had to reset that and then the app had a different layout, eventually got it sorted and is definitely quicker to wake the terminal and have the amount to be charged on the terminal, has worked fine the last few days.

There was an update as I said but I checked my last couple of fares on the sales section and there was no VAT charged....I selected 0% VAT and hit SAVE but if you go out of the app and back in it resets it to 23% so it's something to keep an eye on....it should be a 0% default cos not all VAT is charged at 23%....if you're in the business of charging VAT on a daily basis at either or both rates you'd be wide to it.

Sneaky feckers.  I got the same thing without any notification from SumUp.

But...
If you go to the home page on the app and choose 'profile' (head icon) in top right corner --> Profile  --> Taxes
Then delete all the VAT rates you don't want.  I kept 0% VAT.  Then click the back arrow (top left) to exit and save changes.
Only 0% VAT is charged now.

I restarted my phone and the changes seem to persist.  YMMV

When I looked at watty,at the top of the Taxes page is has No VAT...with a message underneath saying "This sales tax will be selected for new items or manual items by default"

Dunno.  Haven't used Sumup for ages and only read about the VAT rate here...

A €10 fare x 0% VAT = €10.  What's the problem?

...... samsung and gomo.
I use Vodafone Red business plan, costs about 50 notes a month with all the bells and whistles,
business customers get better use of the support services and I get a new phone fer free every 2 years.
The plan would be a lot cheaper without the phone upgrades.
Vodafone very seldom have technical issues and defo the best coverage.

Really Ken?
€620 a year for two years, well as the Shermans say, do the math.

Vodafone WILL NEVER contact you to let you know the contract is up.

I'm with Taxi 1990 on this one. €15 per month on GOMO and I use the "Free phone" I got with Vodafone.

You're saving €45.00 per month with the same bells & whistles.

Cheap phones and cheap plans are the primary reason that there are so many topics on here about technical difficulties.
My phone and plan is most essential to my business and I don't scrimp on what I judge to be essential.

Agreed on that, they will keep taking the full whack long after the 2 year 'new phone' contract is over.
Also they state that when an upgrade is due it will show on the top of your account, which is not true. I knew I was due an upgrade about Paddies weekend just gone but it never showed on my account, I rang them a week later and got the free upgrade with an apology.

Irish staff to escape cuts as new chief executive Margherita Della Valle sets out strategy to restore growth at telecoms group

Vodafone is one of biggest telecoms operators in the Irish market

Telecoms operator Vodafone plans to axe 11,000 jobs from its global operation as new chief executive Margherita Della Valle warned the telecoms group “must change” to end a period blighted by a poor performance in its largest market and a slumping share price.

The cuts will come both at Vodafone’s UK headquarters and in local markets, the group said on Tuesday, as it published full-year results that fell short of analysts’ expectations.

The company has not commented on the impact of the layoffs on the Irish operation, but it is understood that Vodafone Ireland’s staff will not see any job losses from this round of layoffs. Vodafone is one of biggest telecoms operators in the Irish market.

“Our performance has not been good enough,” said Ms Della Valle, who was made permanent chief executive last month after serving as interim boss following the departure of Nick Read at the end of last year. Mr Read’s exit followed pressure from a growing band of shareholders who were unhappy at Vodafone’s struggle in Germany, its largest market, as well as concerns the group was spread too thinly across Europe and Africa.

Vodafone employs about 104,000 people, according to its latest annual report.

The retrenchment set out by Ms Della Valle came as the group’s latest results showed full-year revenues edged up just 0.3 per cent to €45.7 billion, below analysts’ estimates. Its adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation declined 1.3 per cent to €14.9 billion, short of the company’s guidance of €15 billion to €15.2 billion.

Vodafone’s adjusted free cash flow, a measure closely watched by the City, would probably be €3.3 billion for the year to March 2024, it said, less than the €3.8 billion analysts had expected. The company blamed regulatory changes in Germany that will hurt cable TV providers.

Alongside cuts to the workforce, Ms Della Valle is also under pressure to simplify the group’s European operations. Mr Read was criticised by shareholders for failing to secure deals to improve Vodafone’s performance in markets including Spain and Italy.

I've found the GOMO platform faultless since moving from the Vodafone RED plan. The phone is a Samsung A71, a nice handset.
