Next one I buy will be probably 4 to 5 years old but with low mileage 30,000 or less.
I think I will keep it for 3 years maybe, then get rid, after 3 years the big repair bills start coming in I think.

5 years.

60 Euro a week .When it costs more change it .When you buy it is costs about 3K or 60 Euro per week to own thats 3kX9 =27000 the cost of an average new motor .If you buy part worn its still around 3k a year 4 year old car cost 15K 5 years left so 3K a year .I own the thing I am driving paid 11K 4 years ago .Might need a Clutch so still under 3K to keep on the road .The cost of replacing it would average 3K a year .So as long as it costs less than 3K per year to keep it it makes economic sense to fix it .

When I buy something I make it point to learn what will break on it and learn how to fix it.With basic maintenance you can keep any vehicle as long as you want without spending massive money.
No point bragging about earnings if yer handing it back to the mechanic or car dealer every few years for a trade in.Some drivers would be just better off renting IMO.

Wheelchair taxis are way more expensive than saloons as well these days. a 4 year old Rifter is 30,000.

30 after grants?

You will be doing very well if you can find a 4 Y O Wheelie with 30k on the clock ?

25,000 after grants.
-
But you get to keep it until it's 15 years old.Not cheap but not the worst.

I know of a 4 year old with 16,000 on the clock. The people who buy them do feck all driving, usually old people who drive their other half around.

You would be doing very well to get it to 15 years old though, very well.
anyone know anyone who has a wheelchair taxi with no age limit? I do but he seems to have left the game.

Whats specifically could break that would force ya to take a taxi off the road prematurely?
If the maintence is being done properly the vehicle should last.

Just the fear that it breaks down with passengers on the way to the airport or something.

I fully respect that you are good with your car tools MFH, but the new cars are built (IMO) to keep amateur or even professional non-dealer mechanics away from them, they all have way too many sensors/computers that only a main dealer can access ??
-
Ya can buy all the software or even download it illegally nowadays Belker.Stick to the main brands and you can't go too far wrong.
All the info is out there on the net.Dont be afraid to get stuck in.

I traded up my 08 Avensis with a 15 year license in 2020, Emmisions were a big problem and the steering column was on it's last legs.

Aldi were selling OBD readers for €20 last week. You plug it in under the dash and read some basic codes....then Google the codes to dig deeper.

OBD Eleven gives dealer level diagnostics for VAG group cars. As an early adopter my c.€30 dongle came with lifetime "pro" access. They have since developed a subscription system. I believe they now also cover BMW, same dongle but additional/alternative subscription required. However, apart from being able to access and play around with settings and such like it's only been of real benefit on a few occasions, all in respect of Mrs. Catcher's old Fabia for which it identified a faulty sensor I probably couldn't have otherwise diagnosed and, on another occasion, told me which cylinder was misfiring when a new coil was needed. Obviously the latter would have been easy enough to diagnose without the same by simply turning the key with each cylinder disconnected in sequence, being a 3 cylinder engine it wouldn't have started at all with either of the good two disconnected whereas it would continue to start and misfire with the bad one disconnected.

I can prob do simple gambling math, stats, percentages faster in my head then a clerk today in a betting office on a puter.
But car engines I have no idea about. You obviousely grew up with all that MFH, I didn't.
I have no idea of what the majority of the instrument panel on my yoke is all about.

The basics are covered in RSAs EDT these days, Ken. I could give you a lesson at the appropriate rate!

I'm guessing that RSA means Road Safety Association ?
What EDT means is a mystery to me !
And hopefully will remain a mystery to me !!
