Have any of ye ever looked for insurance on a private vehicle while driving a taxi?
is it true that our no claims bonus for the taxi cant be used if we decide to buy and insure a private vehicle?
heard a driving instructor of 30 years experience was quoted 7,000 insurance for a private car he was think of buying.

Can you not drive any other car with the owners permission on your taxi policy? Stick the car in your misses' name, if that's possible and drive around all you want no?
-
I think you can drive a stranger's car but not a family car like your wifes? Open to correction though.
IIRC, I don't think we could transfer our NCB from private cars onto our taxis when we started so maybe the reverse is true also? One is a car vehicle and the other is a PSVehicle? Two different things in the eyes of the insurance company? I dunno though.

I think its another way for the insurance companies to rip people off, like if im driving a private car in Ireland for 20 years, no claims in that 20 years, paying say 400 euro insurance, move to Australia for 3 years, when I move back to Ireland, my no claims bonus is gone and I will have to start at the beginning and pay 3 or 4 grand for insurance, doesnt make any sense, its just greed from the insurance companies.
it makes sense that taxi insurance is higher than private because you have customers in the car who might get hurt and you are on the road way more and so your no claims bonus on private doesnt count for anything but a private car should be less of a risk? so your no claims bonus on taxi should count in a fair world.

If you're unlucky enough to rent a cab for years and finally decide to buy your own cab, previous NCB's don't count. Unless insurance companies have become magnanimous in recent years...Nah! 8)

They really just make up the rules as they go along, my brother drove on my mothers insurance for a few years, it counted when he took out his own insurance and his quote wasnt too bad. but in their little world driving a rented taxi doesn count for some unknown reason.

If you rent a Taxi you are not the owner ,the vehicle is insured on behalf of the owner while your driving is insured .Private insurance you are both the owner and the insured driver .Usually if you change to private they will offer you a portion of your NCB to reflect your Driving history if you were previously an owner driver .Put your name on your hens insurance as an extra driver .

....... I don't think we could transfer our NCB from private cars onto our taxis when we started so maybe the reverse is true also? One is a car vehicle and the other is a PSVehicle? .....
I bought my own Joe in 2010 and my NCB on my private insurance was held over on to my nua Taxi insurance, that loophole (and possibly vice-versa) were closed off very soon after that.
The reality is that if you move from Private to PSV or vice-versa then you start at Zero NCB.

You can drive any other car IF THAT IS COVERED ON YOUR INSURANCE POLICY and the other car that you are driving MUST ALSO BE INSURED.

I wonder what that would mean price wise? 2 + thousand.
I was thinking of buying an Impreza. :-[

That the Other Car must also be insured is a stipulation by Allianz , Liberty, Zurich....and in very recent days, RSA. None of the other Insurers stipulate it......yet.

If you rent, and have an individual policy rather than some kind of fleet policy, then your ncb is transferred to your own policy when you buy a taxi.

I had no problem using my NCD from a rental on my own plate when I got one. Back then private driving NCD wasn't recognised for PSVs but that chnged when Quinn entered the market... new entrants were getting quotes under €1,000 then compared to the IR£5,000+ many of us paid as cosies in the good old days.

Was getting big prices to change over to-Private yippee. Went to a broker M.Murphy and took a 400e deal for a 6 year old Petrol 1.4. Always shop?
