Title: Even public transport has non-payers
Post by: watty on October 30, 2023, 04:35:18 pm
Bus Eireann 9.1%
Dublin Bus 3.6%
GoAhead 9.8%
Irish Rail 6%

Survey shows almost 10% of Bus Eireann passengers found without valid ticket (https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/survey-shows-almost-10-of-bus-eireann-passengers-found-without-valid-ticket-1545591.html)

Almost one in 10 of all passengers on Bus Éireann services were found to be travelling without a valid ticket, according to the results of fare evasions surveys carried out by the National Transport Authority.  The research also found that almost 10 per cent of passengers on bus routes operated by GoAhead Ireland in the greater Dublin region did not have a valid ticket for their journey.  However, a similar survey found the level of fare evasion on Dublin Bus services much lower at under four per cent.  The results, which highlight fare evasion rates on public transport bus companies over an 18-month period to June 2023, were released under freedom of information legislation.  The findings of a similar study published earlier this year revealed fare evasion rates on Iarnród Éireann services averaged six per cent.

I can maybe understand Dublin Bus but how do you get on a Bus Eireann or train without a ticket?  Don't they have inspectors etc?

Imagine if 5-10% of our fares did a runner  :o  :o  :o  I wonder if they'd have higher compliance rates if they had credit card machines like we were forced to adopt?

We have 25 dedicated taxi inspectors working tirelessly to make ours a safe industry. True, I've never seen one in their almost twenty-year existence, but I know they're there. 8)

I met 2 of them lately at the same time, they asked to see my card reader and to see it was charged, then they asked me did I have my first aid kit, I lied and said yes, they luckily didnt ask to see it. I was beginning to think they didnt exist. They are shit at catching illegal drivers though.

The train to dublin from where I live rarely have ticket inpectors on board, id say they loose a lot from people who dont bother paying for a ticket.

Irish Rail figure seems extremely low given that the barriers are lifted on all non-city centre stations at c.19:00?

Maybe the inspectors knock off at 16:45?
