‘Taxis for Ireland’ coalition formed to urge government to address ‘extreme shortage’ hurting businesses (https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/taxis-for-ireland-coalition-formed-to-urge-government-to-address-extreme-shortage-hurting-businesses/a2080092574.html)
A newly-formed Taxis for Ireland Coalition calls on the Government to address the taxi supply shortage. The coalition was formed by six organisations from the tourism, hospitality and enterprise sectors.
They wrote to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and the Transport Minister Eamon Ryan today to appeal to the Government to acknowledge the ongoing crisis, as they say the “extreme shortage” of taxis in cities, towns and rural areas across the country has been affecting the Irish public, economy, tourism, and hospitality businesses for years.
Seven out of 10 people across the country find it difficult to get home from pubs and restaurants in their area, surveys conducted by the group found. Some publicans are operating an “informal taxi service” to get customers home, the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland said.
Coalition members, such as the Restaurants Association of Ireland, Uber, Bolt, and the Vintners Federation of Ireland, have undertaken four surveys this year, which led to the conclusion that the public has a very poor view of the availability of taxis.
More than 63pc of publicans described their local taxi or hackney service as either poor or non-existent, a survey finds.
<snip>
Although the Coalition has acknowledged the work of the National Transport Authority in this area, such as a driver recruitment campaign or increasing fares, they have not resulted in increasing taxi availability, which should be treated as a matter of urgency, they added.
No mention of Dublin Bus or Local Area Hackney licences but hey ho...
-
No mention of Hotels getting back handers out of our wages ?or Pubs that wont let taxi drivers take a shit .Or pubs and restaurants that want streets closed off so they can serve on the foothpaths restricting our working environment .

The squeeze at finishing up time on Fri/Sat and at Xmas has been around since Jaysus was in short pants and will never change, you can't just quadruple the fleet of taxis for a few hours a week and xmas week just to get over a hump, there's the rest of the week/year to factor in where there's more than ample cabs around.
If they got rid of that bed symbol the greedy khunts might get a driver a bit quicker. ::fds ::fds ::fds

Im down the Flats with Big Dommo making Christmas logs out of Lidil Cider Cheese Cake and Jam Sambos .The Solution to the lack of taxis at two in the morning is simple reinstate the old closing times of 11.30 cut down on money spent on drink and all the associated criminality and sicknesses caused by Alcohol .Really simple solution .Green Eco Friendly Socially Responsible Policy .Mc Gregor might even include it in his Presidential Campaign .

Another way to look at it is, if I choose to work a Saturday night, I wont do it if I think I will earn less than 150 euro, so by allowing Uber operate, what are them guys going to make 100 euro? would that be worth working from 10 pm to 4 am dealing with pukers, angry tight customers who dont want to pay the fare, people who are so drunk they dont know their own name and cant remember where they live. people who think they are hilarious and annoy the head off ya, people with empty wallets when you get to their house etc etc
Rideshare could make the situation worse when them guys realize its not worth the hassle and jack it in, and it wont work in rural areas, there arent enough customers to make it viable, that is where local area hackney may just work.
-
Pub and hotel staff push all of their customers onto the street at the same time, then follow them shortly afterwards and complain they can't get a taxi.
No mention of a BUS, a DART or a TRAM.

If them ejits get their way they will have all sorts driving their customers home, boy racers, N plate drivers (worst drivers on the roads), drug dealers etc
would the pub owners like to see a wetherspoons opened in all Irish towns? or is it ok that uber can undercut taxis?
The NTA will tell them to fuck off eventually. ::)
-
Who in their right mind would promote Uber? a business designed to kill the taxi business and enslave drivers.
-
Is it that hard for 1 person out of a group to not drink so they can get home from a restaurant or pub?
-

Should all nightclubs close at the same time so that bar owners can live in mansions?

I see Bolt and Uber are part of this lobby group, I wonder why freenow arent?

FFS would you ever grow up .This is useless Irish Journalists getting 40 euro for an article some useless illiterate fucktard who took Journalism in Griffith College looking for a Story to get the Christmas Pudding Money .I held a membership for the National Union of Journalists the NUJ that is all you need to submit a piece to any Editor but they wont print your stuff .Read back over this forum or Roys I exposed things years before Irish Journalists .I ask any of you to find an earlier article in the Irish media about Covid or rickshaws dealing drugs before I posted ,Watch the Deliveroo drivers getting done for dealing like I predicted .I was also right about Leo and how he will fuck up this country .Dont play this game .The person writing these articles probably live in a tent .It is discusting that NO journalist asks why taxi drivers have to pay 15% for access to THEIR WORK why HOTELS WANT 2 EUROS of our WAGES to give us our work .I know Jurnos read this as I get personal calls regularly from Journalists for comments .I would like to see an Honest Journalist asking why the National Transport Authority do not provide an app it is Infrastructure not competition .If any journalist wants to do a piece contact me I will give you the insight I will actually write it with you .
-
Let the journalists also write about how the NTA ignore illegal unvetted drivers who are undercutting legit drivers and are potentially putting the public at risk.
-
Let me explain to you educationally subnormal wasters who call your selves taxi drivers .You provide an Essential service but the fucktards who represent you are Morons .They promoted Halo thinking it would put the traditional Dispatchers who didnt tell drivers about dereg out of Business .There was a time an aPP was a Business with commercial protection but now that we must ALL ACCEPT card payments by LAW apps no longer are a Commercial entity as what they use to offer card payments are now a legal requirement for all drivers .So providing a NTA backed hailing app with no in app payment other than cash or car and there is no other would not be commercial and would not compete with existing commercial entities as all the NTA would be supplying is infrastructure .Let me explain Red Cow Luas provides Luas services and a Bus link .There are many bus stops on the Quays where both Dublin Bus ,Bus Eireann and Kavanaghs all stop that Bus stop is infrastructure not competition .I have met most of the reps in this industry and my Dog Shit is more intelligent than those fucking idiots .15% out of your earnings and 2 euro more if you pick up a hotel ,there is a problem at the airport and you pay to solve it and not one Rep is crying foul .Cop the fuck on you are useless no good pieces of shit for allowing yourselves to be treated like this .My record on both here and Roys can never be denied I told you what was comming and you stupit cunts put me down .I told you all ten years ago about how the Bo bo was manipulated now you can see you need to accept a certain amount and they decide what jobs to give you .Bend over open wide Free Now is going inside .

I heard of a story lately of a legit taxi driver who got a lift from an illegal driver, the legit guy reported the illegal and had to go to court to give evidence the illegal took money off him for a trip. they convicted the illegal guy.
I was thinking if all us legit guys who have problems with illegals tried to catch them ourselves, if I was in say Donegal and was asked by a legit taxi to try catch the illegal, I would do it and then go to court to give evidence against the illegal. its sad that we have to do that but the NTA are avoiding certain illegals in my opinion.

If you ask for a printed receipt and the cabbie doesn't offer you one, the fare is free.

Has any Jurno ever written an article about people queuing outside pubs on Harcourt Street or Camden Street to get in then no seats and another Q inside to get a Drink .Why are they not calling for MORE PUBS and CLUBS or more Hotel Rooms to be built to drive down room prices to increase tourism .Funny how taxi drivers who do not advertise with the Media always seem to be held responsible for not getting overcrowded pubs empty late at night .It is almost incitement to hatred of taxi drivers being promoted by these pencil sharpeners .And they wonder why young people dont read newspapers and rely on citizen Journalists on Twitter and Facebook for their news .
For those who are interested in real news .The Rioters won .Social welfare and housing are to be cut for Ukranian refugees but it wont be reported that way as a Victory for Street Violence .This wont even make the front pages as COP 23 failure and Eamo crying for Mother Earth will be the headlines .Stay Safe the media would love to see a taxi driver beaten up so they could say it was because passengers are frustrated waiting for a taxi .
-
Another one for them, I was taking to a customer yesterday about nights out in our local town on the busy nights at christmas, the 2 of us were talking about how packed certain pubs and nightclubs will be in our town, sardines have more room in their tins, what if there was a fire? the shit would hit the fan then but a blind eye is turned, pack them in.
on the rioters winning, I have a lot of time for the Ukrainians, know lots of them through work but why were they paid so much? why were they given more than other refugees in Ireland and why were we giving them more than other European countries? The cut had to be made in fairness but I kind of agree with you that the Government are half doing this with an election in mind.

I responed to that news article and emailed Pat Crotty (VFI) and Elaina Fitzgerald Kane (ITIC), members of the coalition about Taxi shortages. This is what I stated;
"To Pat Crotty and Elaina Fitzgerald Kane, members of the coalition about Taxi shortages.
From Ken Cashman, Cork city night time Taxi driver. Badge number L4447.
What I am proposing and hopefully you might agree and put forward is for all city and large town Bus routes to stay open for an extra 4 hours from 11.30pm to 3.30am on Friday and Saturday nights, to include the Sundays of bank holiday weekends, + 16th/17th March and 26th/31st December as the taxies alone cannot cope with the demand at these times.
Double the bus fare price after midnight and Double the bus driver's salary and possibly put a security guard on every bus after midnight.
If the above was implemented there would be little talk on the radio or press ever again about shortages of taxies.
The simple solution for everyone is just to get more taxies, but the problem is that it is only for the 8 hours per week as mentioned above that there is a shortage of taxies, for the rest of the week Taxi drivers are waiting around for fares.
Best, Ken."
-
The simple solution is for people to have a bit of patience and wait for the taxi home. go get a bag of chips or try to pull someone while you wait.
-

It's just window dressing, they go on the full whack after the 3 months and won't be turfed out onto the street when the 3 months is up either.
-
38.80 is a weird number, you would think they could round it up to 39 euro. the 80 cent is a bit of an insult.
-
The simple solution is for people to have a bit of patience and wait for the taxi home. go get a bag of chips or try to pull someone while you wait.
It actually is a big problem in the cities at times I mentioned above, the icing on the cake was the recent Sunday night of the Cork bank holiday Jazz weekend, the heavens opened with torrential rain at 2.15am and continued fer an hour, it was Fookin carnage !
I had a pick-up fer an old regular at 2.30am that night and fer the first time ever I had to tell him that I could not drive safely in to the city center to get him and he would have to walk out of town in the pissing rain to meet me, which he did.

is there no chippers for them to wait in? that is what happens in my town, no need to get soaked while waiting.
-
Not meaning to be disrespectful 1990 but I don't think you understand the sheer volume of customers waiting fer taxies on the streets at the 'Jungle hours'. At the ultra peak hour of 2.30am any Saturday night there could be almost a thousand customers attempting to flag down a cab in Cork city, and I would imagine Dooblin is a lot worse.
The chances of flagging down a taxi from the doorway of a chipper are Zilch, I won't stop fer anyone even with a closed bag of food at that hour.
-
I suppose it is different in cities but way more taxis there also. The clever people in my town usually walk a bit out of town to catch the taxis coming back into town, or else got get something to eat and then get a taxi an hour or so later.
-
This is the door to UBER

That is about the same everywhere but unfortunately there are not too many clever people on the street at 2.30am !
-
Maybe UBER will "organise" a riot or a rape and blame it on the lack of taxis.
Bar owners want to compete with nightclubs by staying open late. They don't serve food late. Drunks go to fast food joints where rows begin, and it's blamed on the taxi drivers, not the unionised bus drivers, the unionised DART drivers, or the unionised TRAM drivers.
Whoever promotes UBER U.S. style is most probably on the take.

As someone said no one will have money to get taxis next year so dont worry about Uber. The NTA dont want them anyway.
-
As someone said no one will have money to get taxis next year so dont worry about Uber. The NTA dont want them anyway.
Nta are in talks already with them on Leo's instructions
-
The law would have to be changed to allow private cars to ply for hire as PSV's and that's unlikely in the current climate.
-
As someone said no one will have money to get taxis next year so dont worry about Uber. The NTA dont want them anyway.
The NTA's mind can be changed as we have seen with technology charges, and surge pricing.

Sure they are.

This is a uber ploy no taxis
Nta are months months into drafting up plan for uber style system I heard on the quiet
Uber are even advertising here ads on utbe etc
Ask this bo WHY HAS THE RADIO and media gone quiet about uber lately newstalk and today fm?
For months it was a bug agenda
They stopped cause uber have it in the bag talks going on
I was told by a nta official who works there and is related to me
-
You said they had spaces in Dublin airport as well, that was over a year ago.
-
I don't mind.If Uber rideshare comes in I'll just sell my EV taxi for 30k and lump it off my mortgage. The NTA can go and sing for the grant money. Then we all just work for Uber in whatever we want.Taxi driving isn't any more lucrative than what rideshare drivers make now we have far bigger overheads.
Let's be honest most of us got our plate for next to nothing and didn't have to pass any serious geography tests so we don't really have any right to pull the ladder up.
If the NTA do anything stupid they'll have much more serious mess to clean up.They know this already.
-
We don't hear anything on the radio about lack of taxis? Lol I hear it at least once a week on newstalk.
-
If it comes in, I wouldn't quit the game but would hold on to my taxi until 2026, and see what to do then.
Probably go into a different business and maybe do a little bit of taxi work. I wouldn't work for uber, there would still be a place for the odd taxi.
-
There a new type hack type which can use the app similar to the way uber runs up north being explored I heard
Leo gave the go aged I heard when he had the reigns.
-
I'd say they would allow saloon licences and probably help with insurance costs before they would allow uber rideshare.
-
Most of us are making fuk all so it won't make much difference .Dont jump in the Liffey just yet.The economy is goimg down the Jax and yis are fretting over rideshare. There was no rideshare or smelly hacks 13/14 years ago and taxi drivers were still killing themselves. If it's gonna be shite it's gonna be shite for everyone.
-
https://villagemagazine.ie/uber-persists-in-lobbying-for-entry-into-irish-taxi-market/
I'm not worried, some taxi drivers are just obsessed with uber, john m was the same years ago.
-
Freenow have also lobbied in the past.As soon as any regulation is lossened they'll be the first to follow Uber and Bolt.
This is a shite thread by the way.Very little facts and a lot of slagging Uber when Freenow are much more likely to screw us.Taxi drivers are screwing each other every day more by putting unpiad adverts on their vehicles for Freenow.
The pubs, restaurants and the hotels have been gouging everyone since COVID.This is their attempt to blame us because they don't have the business they had last year.People are realising the city center isn't worth the money anymore.
-
I'd be more worried about illegal drivers. The NTA and Guards are useless when it comes to catching them. The only thing that saves us from illegal drivers totally destroying our business is 99% of their customers are riff raff alcoholics and Students with no money or sense.
-

We know Uber is corrupt so why would we advertise and promote their brand?
-
They're all the same SB.Uber just has enough money not to give a bollox.
When I was in Prague a few years ago Bolt have multiple vehicle types.Everthing from Limos to taxis to hack type vehicles with no branding as an budget option. They also own electric scooters and deliver food too like Uber eats.

Under the counter payment? When? Is it not just the vintners and others having a moan about us?
Would you say there is more demand for taxis now than in 2017 when uber were mad to get rideshare here?
I remember 2017 was a great year for me, busier then than now.

Dear Ken,
A deregulated market would sort itself out.
