Title: Sumup - Tap To Pay
Post by: Rat Catcher on December 28, 2023, 07:50:42 am
Pretty cool. Only noticed it when setting up / testing my phone nua - TCL 40, €129 Clubcard price from Tesco. Gives another option for those who have reported issues with reader connections.

Yes, the phone is all you need. I paid myself a Euro without going near the car to find the reader.

I don't think it was on my last phone either, Pixel 2 - if it was I didn't notice it... but the bugger's dead now and doesn't hold it's charge* anymore so can't check... might plug it in later and have a look.

*needs to be plugged in for a good hour before it'll start and then can't be unplugged for more than 11.5 minutes or it dies.

Tap to pay not on my fone

Maybe you need a NFC chip inside your phone?

Eir chip.   Is that a standard chip?

Dunno... I think they all have some sort of NFC... I know one could, at least theoretically, use the dinosaur Pixel 2 to make contactless payments. Might be an Android Version / software thing?

I've Tap to Pay on the OnePlus 11. Not sure how you would be fixed if the customer needs to insert card though.

You'd have to get cash. AFAIK the relevant regulations only require us to have a "contactless" solution... also, bear in mind, that according to NTA you may insist on cash if your payment device or it's connection fails... the legal bit of their explanation being that a client is obliged to comply with any reasonable request made by a driver and a request for cash in such circumstances falls within the same.

If they throw cash at you is that considered contactless?

I used to find that offensive, but now I'd be quite happy with that kind of contact less payment.

i feckin hate when at the end they wanna tap and you havta fire up the machine and it might take it's time.
has anybody found out a way to stop sumup trying to add 23% to every payment. i stick it to No Vat and press save but the cuntin thing reverts back to 23% all the time.

My Xiaomi android doesnt seem to get a great signal on the tap to pay.To make it work you have to press the card against the back of the phone in a very exact position for about 15 seconds to get it to read. For now I'll stick with the sumuo reader.Still a good feature to have though.

Apologies, only saw this now. As per OP it's a TCL 40 SE from Tesco, Clubcard Price €129.xx... possibly available very slightly cheaper on Amazon but I concluded the difference was too small to justify the wait.

I've only used the tap to pay once to test it with my own card and once with Mrs. Catcher's card. On my phone you need to tap the rear camera with the card. However, I find the card reader more convenient in the car so it's only really a backup facility in my case... at least until I break or lose the card reader.

You can remove the VAT by logging in to your Sumup account through a www browser. I can't remember the exact procedure but it's straightforward enough, IIRC someone mentioned it on here before. You can also update the receipt details to remove your address if you wish.

The app might tell you why. If you tap Home followed by the person icon in the top right corner and then select SumUP Tap from the list it should produce a checklist highlighting what's missing. Mine has all required items present and correct as follows:

I set my VAT rate to zero last year back when it was first mentioned on here and it is still at zero today.

Ironically, I had to use the Tap To Pay facility twice last evening. Since I learned to let the app turn on and off the card reader it never failed on my old Pixel 2. To fix it on the phone nua I had to select new device from the failed to connect screen and re-pair the reader. Fortunately the TTP worked flawlessly on both occasions covering me until I eventually got a few minutes to investigate and fix the issue with the reader connection.

"You can also update the receipt details to remove your address if you wish".
I wanted to do that, and asked Sumup."
You can personalize your customer receipts by editing the business information shown on them and adding a custom message.
"Log in to your SumUp profile on a web browser and select the profile symbol in the top right corner.
Select "Receipts".
Click to edit the different areas of the receipt to add an address, contact details and a custom message.
Changes to your receipts won't be change the official personal, contact and business details registered to your SumUp profile.
If you've any further questions, please feel free to contact us."
My reply.
"Hi,
That doesn't work. On my PC the "receipts" page is blank, and tells me "unavailable, please complete your registration". On my phone app there is no "receipts " tab.
Can you please Just do it for me?"
Sumup.
"Please, try to perform the steps provided from another browser - for example Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge - if this solutions won't resolve your issue, try to clear the cookies of your browser and following this, try to log in on our dashboard over again."
Me, No that doesn't work.

I think we're split into two on this one.  It seems like if sumup works, it works brilliantly but if it doesn't it's shite.  I'm in the latter and moved to Square Reader.
