Title: WHEELCHAIR GRANT
Post by: taxi1990 on January 02, 2024, 04:07:10 pm
my NCT is up 22 January.

vehicle licence is up around the 17th of February.

I applied for the wheelchair grant today, they said my application would be processed in 10 working days.

im wondering if I should get my current taxi an NCT, it will need a bit of work to get through the NCT and a couple of tyres.

if they say im good to go with the grant, anyone now how long I will have to buy a new taxi?

I cant remember how long it took them last time to let me know if I was getting the grant or not.

Between purchase,NCT,suitability, grant processing etc I think mine took about 4 weeks.
Have you sourced a vehicle?

An NCT and a few part-worn tyres would cost you €150-ish?  Not a lot to spend to get you a few months grace while you're sorting out the WAT?

No, I haven't found one yet but I think that shouldn't be an issue.

I will have to get the meter transferred from one taxi to the other as well.

That is true. it all depends on how long it takes the NTA to let me know if my application has been successful or not.

There is a knocking sound as well, so some suspension parts needed id say and maybe they will find other issues during the NCT.

I don't know much about WAT's but I don't think you can buy them 'off the shelf''?  Do you have to buy a regular 8 seater & get it converted, along with an engineers report, which all takes time?  Personally I'd spend the few hundred to keep your current yoke on the road for a few months so you have that cushion if there's a glitch with the new WAT.

The last one I bought was ready to go, all converted, engineers report etc certain garages specialize in selling them to both taxi drivers and private people.

If it were me I wouldn't have left it so late --

Spend the dough or else you'll be snookered by suppliers--be it for jammer/meter swap /Nct

The change of year will yield a few more motors in the market --try not to buy a Jan/Feb or Jul./Aug reg as you'll find yourself in same shit on renewal --

spend the money on getting my current one through NCT?

last year the NTA said in very early february that the money for WAV grants was gone, so if some guy was told he could get the grant in january, could he leave it until march to buy?

I sent in the application at around 10 am this morning.

the funds ran out early february last year  :(

you would think that you should get 3 months to make a purchase.

I think I will put my current one through the NCT asap.

@silverbullet I will have a look through the different garage sites, one thing I learned from looking at my own taxi and other wheelchair taxis is price isnt always the most important factor, some of the garages converting the WC taxis are very rough and I would rather pay more for one that is finished right.

Not much point in getting it NCT'd if the taxi vehicle 15 year licence expires on 17th Feb, most likely you will be trading in the old Joe fer scrap anyway.

They're right beside me in Santry and seem to be the main suppliers of Krippelvagens in Dublin. Most others are shiteboxes imported from the UK.

The one I have came from Scotland and I cant fault it really, its been good to me, never broke down on me.

If you have till summer 2026 then prob best to get it NCT'd and past suitability this year and then you have plenty of time to review your options if you get the grant.

Not surprising, I knew there would be big demand but didnt think the money would be gone that quickly.

I wonder how many new entrants are there, hopefully a few.

1990 I would think First time applicants will get priority Get more taxis on the road and more off the Dole .With that demand there will be a scarcity of Part Worn Yokes .The rules in GB have changed you use to be able to update your Wheelchair accessable after three years but that has changed so the supply has slowed down .Drive the wheels off the thing you have .

The money is NOT gone - the NTA has only sent out the grant letters.  Those with grant letters still have to buy a new WAV, get it passed out as a WAT and only then do they get the money.  EDIT:  So you're spending, what, €40-50k upfront to claim back €17k  3 or 4 months down the road?  Not many have that much money floating around.

How many will actually put a WAT on the road and claim the money is anyone's guess.  I'd say there'll be another round of offers in 3 or 4 months when the first batch of grant letters expire.

Probably just like the EV grants where there were a good few of us applying for the grants as we weren't sure exactly when vehicles would be needed or available.I never really noticed it until recently but there's a lot of 2012  VW caddys in the fleet. All just one gearbox failure away from the scrapyard.

Let's see the MVLO's do sweetheart deals with the financially vulnerable, who will name the MVLO in their will in exchange for the use of their licence.

I will drive mine into the ground (even more) if I have to (don't get the grant) but will change it if I get the grant.

the form I filled out was very short, name address etc but one thing I was surprised by was it asked if I had ever been prosecuted by NTA for anything, bit strange? I didnt think that would come into it when assessing who should get a grant.

im sure they will release more money later in the year  for WC grants like they did  last year.

Keep running it into the ground. If you wait until it's actually due to be changed your next vehicle could be considerably cheaper.Car dealers are struggling now with the interest rates up so high.

It's not like a newer wheely van is much better than the previous one. They're all still converted vans. The driving experience hasn't really improved for the van in a long time.Who knows by the time the next crisis comes along you might have another age extension. The taxi industry has historically rewarded those who do fuk all when changing vehicles.

I just don't want it to break down some day on route to Dublin airport.
The newer wheelchair taxis are a lot quieter, there is a lot of road noise off my one and I don't have things like air-conditioning.

345,000 miles.

Prices are crazy though, mine was €14,000 for a 5 year old Peugeot partner in 2016. Now I see a 3 year old berlingo for sale for €35,000

When things go quiet you'll still have the payments but not much work.Plenty of brand new taxis out there this morning and feck all happening.I doubt very much 2024 and 2025 are gonna be busier than the last couple of years.

You're right. As I pointed out before, it's almost embarrassing watching guys in €50,000 cars queueing up outside burger joints waiting for students eating their food and negotiating a fare.

No way would I spend 3 k on an engine for a car that will be  forced off the road in 2 years.

I got a second hand gear box a couple of years ago, €320 I think.

I won't be taking out a loan to buy and it won't be a 2024 reg, it will be a 3 or 4 year old.
