Title: How to turn off the sound (voice navigation) in FreeNow app?
Post by: watty on April 10, 2024, 05:15:27 pm
How do you turn off the street by street voice directions in the FreeNow app?  I got a new phone (https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_poco_x6-12723.php) recently and it's driving me nuts that I can't turn it off properly.  Obviously I did it on my last phone but I'm fukked if I can remember how!

1. I don't see any option in the app settings.
2.  There's a loudspeaker icon on the main page but that doesn't seem to do fukk-all.
3.  Even if I turn down the volume of my phone (side buttons), the sound is still getting through.
4.  I even went into the FN app individual setting on my phone and turned off it's ability to access the sound function but it's still getting through.

The best I've got so far is no sound but the radio volume dips every time FN tries to send vocal directions through the car radio.

Turning things on & off at the side of the road would only confuse me tbh.  Best to keep it simple Shirley (K.I.S.S.)  ;D

Like today, I somehow managed to dim the screen to black just as I pulled up to Dunnes with the pax waiting with their shopping.  I tried shouting out the window to explain myself but they just looked at one another like, does this guy have a driving licence!

It's doing both.  Or maybe I'm hearing voices at this stage.

I can just about hear her voice from my phone.  But the phone app is also sending a signal (but no voice) to the car radio that dims the radio sound while she says turn left etc etc

I'll mess around with bluetooth tomorrow and see if that changes things  ::clap

@ Octavia1:   yippee  Turning off the car bluetooth and unpairing my phone from it seems to have fixed a lot of the problems.  I'm not hearing voices anymore and that bloody woman has stopped telling me where to go!  Only potential problem now is I think I have to physically hold the phone when I need to phone some lazy fecker who is 5 mins late coming out of their house.

Still, we're 90% of the way there.  More experimenting to do over the weekend.  I owe you a pint of sheep's milk or whatever it is youse Celts drink  :2cheers

It's amazing (or maybe not) that the FN app doesn't have an on/off switch for the voice directions.  It's pretty embarrassing driving someone around for money and reward and the phone is shouting away telling you where to turn etc etc...

Because before, the sound went through the car radio/speakers via bluetooth and I could talk to the sleepy head via the car (handsfree).  I guess now, with no bluetooth, I have to hold the phone to my ear and use it like a regular phone?  Ah, we'll find out in a day or two.

Main thing is we've stopped that bloody woman telling me how to drive  >:D

That's what I do all the time, use the loudspeaker on the phone while it's in the cradle and not connected to bluetooth ever, I find that using the phone with bluetooth has a mind of it's own.

The navigation bit is muted on mine. You can manage the bluetooth connection in bluetooth settings on your phone. In general I disable the "Media" option so taxi app alerts play on the phone and not the car speaker as the latter would interrupt the wireless.

I must be doing something very stupid with my new phone because obviously the mute worked fine on my old phone.  And both are Poco's (Xiaomi sub-brand) so it's likely I've done something silly.  I'll press a few more buttons next time I'm working and see if I can fix it.  Thanks all!

And, RC, before you ask, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a (im)migrant that sneaked into my house one night and changed the setting.

When the app is in Navigation mode...when you have accepted a fare, the voice/mute icon is on the right hand side of the screen(top icon of the three on screen)

Yeah, I saw that.  But on my new phone, it seems to reset itself to Voice-ON with every new job.  It's a PITA.  But like I said, I must be doing something wrong if I'm the only one asking about it?

The app is getting kinda dangerous because of the amount of times you have to interact with it e.g. swiping up to turn off the 'follow-up jobs' option with every single new job.  Another thing I don't think you can turn off permanently...

Try rebooting your mobile.Something similar to this happened to me ages ago and resetting the phone while logged in to the app saved the settings somehow.

By rebooting, do you mean kicking it repeatedly?  I've tried that and it didn't work  :P

Might be no harm also to log out of your Freenow account then log in again.

Perhaps even deleting the app then downloading it again might fix it.They update it so often that your phone might be struggling to manage all the different versions.

It was a new phone and I took the time to fresh install all my apps instead of just copying them over.  But it might be useful to clear out the cache...

A couple of unrelated but possibly helpful things I eventually discovered on my clever telephone nua:

New(er) versions of Android have a "new" permission called "Auto-start" which by default was granted to some of the embedded apps (e.g. Android Auto), many of which I don't use. However for N26 and Revolut to work properly i.e. deliver notifications of receipts and expenditure in real time you need to manually grant said permission. On my phone it's under Settings->Smart Manager.

Adding the above for Sumup and turning off bluetooth scanning under location settings (Settings->Location->Manage Location Services) seems to have resolved intermittent issues with the Sumup Reader. Not sure what bearing either of the same actually have on the issue but since implementing both the reader connection has been reliable.... although I occasionally need to manually power on the device in which case I tend to wait for 10 seconds after the football on the top right of the screen stops spinning.

Long, Long, Long story made as short as possible.

I upgraded my iphone to a new iphone 11 in March last year with Vodafone.
All was good fer a few months then it was losing internet connection intermittently especially while on FN jobs at drop off points with sumup running in the background.

I complained to Vodafone multiple times and always got the same answer to reset network settings which never worked.

I got a lend of an iphone 7 from a colleague and sent the faulty iphone 11 off fer repair arranged by Vodafone, back it came with exactly the same problems and I repeated that again sending the phone fer repair a second time with the same result.

Eventually Vodafone replaced it with a new iphone 11, and again the exact same problems with the brand new iphone 11. Most thankfully I still had my friends iphone 7 to keep me at work while all this was ongoing.

More eventually (100+ calls later) Vodafone accepted defeat and kindly offered to "let me out of contract" but I refused that offer and insisted on a new phone and compensation.

After some debate I was offered a new iphone 14 and €200 in credit which I haggled up to €300 credit, and he said he was arranging fer the courier dropping off the new iphone 14 to collect the 2 old iphone 11's, I refused to hand over the 2 old iphone 11's stating that all my data was still on them.

A month passed and the nua iphone 14 (on same old 2023 contract) still working perfectly and no word from Langer Dan in Vodafone about wanting the 2 old seemingly faulty iphone 11's back so I gave them both to me small fella.

Both the old iphone 11's were in perfect 'Mint' condition both with box and accessories, and I did a birra research before giving them to my small fella telling him that he might get about €170 each fer them off CEX if he was really lucky.

He eventually got €195 EACH fer the 2 dodgy iphones 11's, and I got a €300 credit note and a new ipnone 14.

That is the very shortened version BUT IT WAS A LONG SLOG.

I think I've narrowed down the problem to 'Android Auto' and the car.  Android Auto (  >:D ) being a Google product wants to be on all the time and suck in all my personal info.  Basically, when you plug an Android phone via USB cable into a computer (or my car as it turns out), the phone asks you if you want to just connect for the charge or do 'data transfer' as well.  Because of my computer habits, I was choosing 'data transfer' when I connected my phone to the car power supply via USB.

And this is when Google's Android operating system and  >:D lost the run of themselves and repeatedly started  >:D without my permission.  Even if I switched  >:D off in the car, it would try and re-connect a few seconds later...

So the solution in my case seems to be:
(a) connect the phone/FN wirelessly with no USB cable but then the battery drains or;
(b) connect via USB and only connect for the charge.  Then  >:D doesn't connect and fuk up the FN connection.

I never liked  >:D before and this just increased my antipathy towards it  >:(  I'd spit on it only I'd be spitting on my own car  ::fight

@ Watty, I just have my phone connected to a car power source to charge the battery always whilst driving, bluetooth is on but only fer the sumup, not FN.

I had a FN app job this morning from the nest to Glanmire throught the nua Dunkettle roundabout and tapped the phone screen to put on the FN loudspeaker on the phone as Dunkettle is still a bit of a mystery to navigate.

I navigated it and then pressed the screen again to silence the FN app.

Hope this helps....

I'm not the best at IT, but I think I'm kinda understanding ye both ??

My phone is plugged in to the what would be called the old cigarette lighter socket (is that 12V ?) and not the USB charger, I bought a USB cable to cigarette lighter socket thing in Tescos a few years back fer small money.
I know I'm not making sense but I'll send on a few photos if required ?

Try:
Settings -> Apps -> All Apps -> Android Auto -> Disable

The only other thing that could have helped solve the now apparently resolved issue I was having with the Sumup Terminal connection on my phone nua is keeping it plugged in. I was letting it go almost flat initially 'cos something led me to believe that was better for the non-replaceable battery's life but I've been leaving it in regardless of late using one of these yokes:

66W Car Charger, TechRise Fast...

My phone says the car gets to decide.  And once the USB cable (with 'Data Transfer' ON) is plugged into the data port, off the car goes and tries to connect.  It's Google really that's to blame for trying to take over every inch of my/our lives with the apps.

I think my best bet is what Shallow Hall suggested.  Go old school and get one of those 12V chargers.  (I checked and I do have a 12V slot.  But no ashtray...)

I got the one in the link above quite recently. Probably at the higher end of the market price wise but it works as a fast charger with my phone nua. If I plug it into the car's USB socket it complains that it's charging slowly and advises using the charger that came with the phone... No charger actually came with the phone but it seems happy enough with the USB sockets I got from Screwfix during COVID '19 when indoors. The car charger also displays the car's battery voltage (not it's wattage as in the photo) which I guess is pretty cool... ifn you like stuff like that.
