A taxi driver who was told by a publican he was unwelcome in a pub came back a short time later as a passenger in a van that rammed into the gates of the premises, a court has heard. Larry Ducey (58) was hanging out the passenger window holding a hammer, a witness alleged. Judge David McHugh imposed a three-month sentence and warned Ducey to stay away from the owners of the pub. The defendant, of The Park, Wolstan Haven in Celbridge, Co Kildare, was found guilty of criminal damage and production of a weapon during the course of a dispute at the Abbey Lodge Bar, Celbridge, Co Kildare, on June 19, 2021.

In his evidence, Ducey claimed he left the pub after he and his friend were told they were not being served, and his plan was to go home. He was in another individual’s van and was “in shock” when this person drove up to the gates of the Abbey Lodge Pub and stopped. The driver did not hit the gate, Ducey said. He said there was a clawhammer on the dashboard, but he claimed he did not hold it up or threaten anyone with it.

Finding Ducey guilty, Judge McHugh said the evidence of the McNamee brothers was “clear, comprehensive and compelling”. Asking the judge to be lenient, defence lawyer Mark McMahon said Ducey was a taxi driver with two adult children, and was caring for his wife, who had a chronic pain condition.

It's one way to keep an eye on criminals. Put them in traceable jobs.
