It seems fears of a rise of the far right were somewhat overstated after all ... with our world renowned Cead Mile Failte policies once again endorsed by the electorate.
I guess it's refreshing insoafar as it can be interpreted as a public expression of our gratitude to all those immigrants who keep our hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, spar shops, hotels, restaurants, taxis, buses, bin collections, etc, etc running. The increasing number of immigrants elected shows that we are a nation within which hard work and dedication is rewarded.... and it's not just up above in Dublin. I see Cork celebrated it's first black councillor and there may be something of a Healy-Rae stlye dynasty developing out in Tallaght with not one but two Pereppadans (Baby and young Britto) being elected.
Probably no coincidence that FG ran the highest number of immigrants this time round. Our Tik Tok Teesh seems to have his finger on the pulse.

Just stating the obvious but do yis not think it's odd that as soon as someone settles in makes a new life in Ireland the first thing they wanna do is run for office?.I hope we're not getting all the political rejects from other countries.
I don't vote so can't really complain but it seems a bit strange to escape one place then turn up somewhere else trying to change things that you don't like.

I don't really see it that way, MfH. In my experience immigrants are often community minded so get involved in stuff that would naturally steer them to local politics. There'd probably be more if we still had Town Councils but I doubt immigrants are disproportionately represented in any event. If anything they're probably under represented statistically as a lot of localities, particularly outside of the big cities, are not particularly susceptible to change. Obviously, national politics is a different ballgame but it is, IMO, a good thing that those who want to get involved in what can often be quite a thankless endeavour are encouraged to do so.

Ok makes more sense.I suppose you need to be a certain type of person to emigrate in the first place.Maybe they're just a little bit more ambitious and they put themselves or are asked to run in these situations.

Those who emigrated probably naturally have a bit more get up and go than average alright. I have an Italian friend who jokes that he wouldn't know Italy at all if it wasn't for being married to an Irish lady causing him to do all the tours and sightseeing stuff when back in Italy!
I would also question your apparent assumption that those seeking election to local authorities want "change". Again, in my own experience, local politics isn't about changing anything. Councillors don't have any real power. It's more about fighting your area's case when and where funding is available from the relevant council which could be anything from getting a few quid for resident's associations to plant a few flowers to (re)development of council owned facilities, etc...

I don't really understand the view that all kids born in corpo built ghettos are entitled to free gaffs. If we accept that, surely those little darlings should be excluded from second (or at least third) level education. We do need to come up with housing for minimum wage workers though. At the moment we seem to be heading towards HMOs which I guess are ideally suited to first generation immigrant single males but, in the longer term, the solution will involve - by whatever means - very significant devaluation of existing houses, something that's never going to be too popular with the electorate, in particular within influential middle class social circles.

The GFA protects self (majority) determination in Norn Iron. While ideologically I'd like to see a united Ireland within those parameters, I must admit I do like visiting Norn Iron as a foreign country and, on that somewhat selfish basis, I have suggested a trade off within which the British would return Gibraltar to the Spanish and ship the monkeys and monarchists to a Norn Iron, complete with duty free tax haven status.

To be fair, SF didn't lose any seats and Independents lost 4 seats in the locals. I guess, if we stick with the facts (however mundane) the real winners were the immigrants with record numbers being elected.
Independent Ireland is an interesting new party which gained 13 seats - taking some Councillors (but not seats) from established parties. Billed as being far right it may become a more palatable option for racists. However, I did hear several of it's candidates on mainstream / fake media suggest that migration was a long way down the list of issues raised on the doorsteps in a manner one could only describe as dismissive of the party's perceived agenda. Add to that it's non-whip framework and I guess suspicion of candidates' true motives is understandable. In any event, the far right could have won a few more seats than it did if it was united. IMO, II looks like the obvious vehicle to unity among racists even if a lot of the candidates' commitment to the ol racism is questionable.... it's a numbers game at the end of the day!

True but I don't see " far rite " as racists ....maybe some them are but small Towns an villages have bean greatly impacted by bus loads of Algerian, Somalian an afghans filling ther hotels ....one must consider the enormous social an practical impact that that has on established

Anywaysanall, call them racists, far right, nutters, whatever... at least they can't persist with the nonsensical claims that they represent their area as we now know they represent somewhere between 0% and 8% of any given area with most of those at the upper end of that range being Independent Ireland and, as such, with questionable levels of commitment to the ol' racism. Given the influence chambers of commerce have on local elections we can also dismiss concerns non business owners seem to have for business owners' profits!

I know what you mean. I had to tell him the same. And by God did he grovel. In fact I've never seen anyone before or since put so much time and effort in an apology. In the end I actually felt sorry for him. That's how effective his grovelling was. So he well able to kiss ass if he has to. I mean just look at his banging on about fn the whole time and how great they are. In fact, some might say, that his splattering of his car with fn stickers is the ultimate in the grovelling world. He's like the McGregor of apologetic people.

An Indian Councillor has been elected in Tallaght along with his son.
Britto Pereppadan and his father Baby will serve the area well.
