Dublin City Council unveils plans for multi-million euro traffic free College Green Plaza (https://www.breakingnews.ie/ireland/dublin-city-council-unveils-plans-for-multi-million-euro-traffic-free-college-green-plaza-1778273.html)
Dublin City Council has unveiled plans for its multi-million euro traffic free plaza at College Green. The project, estimated to have risen in cost to €80 million, is aiming to transform the public space into what the council calls, “a compelling (and) attractive destination for everyone”. The plaza, which was mooted eight years ago when planning permission was first sought, is at the 'very early stages’ of development, the council in a statement said. “This is a very exciting project for the city of Dublin and we encourage all those interested in helping to inform what it looks like to participate in the online consultation,” the statement continued.
Extensive consultation is underway with a wide range of stakeholders to help inform the design. The council’s project team is working toward the completion of the preliminary design by the end of this year, with a view to submitting a planning application by early 2026. The project is significantly broader in scope, scale and ambition than the initial project brought to planning in 2017. “It also has the benefit of driving significant and impactful changes for the area as it will capitalise on the opportunities for the space that will be realised by the National Transport Authority’s (NTA) network redesign, which will remove all buses from College Green on a phased basis,” the council noted.
A preliminary cost estimate for the project is €80 million, however the budget for the project will be reviewed and refined when the preliminary design is completed according to council management. The original figure mentioned in 2017 was €10 million. However, in November of the following year, then An Bord Pleanála, refused permission citing the potential for “significantly negative impacts” on bus services.
The the online consultation which can be found here.
2017 - €10 million
2025 - €80 million
Finish date - my guess --> 200 million?
Seems very expensive just to give somewhere for teenage kids to drink, take drugs and attack passersby. Would it not be cheaper to rent the National Stadium and let them fight each other up there? Could make a bit of money back by televising it? An Irish version of Squid Game (https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/93405?language=en-US) perhaps?
In other news, Cost of deciding to name new hospital 'National Children's Hospital Ireland' confirmed (https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/politics/cost-deciding-name-new-hospital-35452737)
It cost the Government €4,500 to name the new Children’s Hospital the "National Children's Hospital Ireland", it has been confirmed. This was one of 17 names suggested for the hospital with “the support of a specialist branding agency”. The beleaguered hospital, on the grounds of St James’ Hospital in Dublin, is expected to open in June 2026 and in the “best case scenario” will cost at least €2.2 billion.
Yep, a 'specialist branding company' was paid €4,800 to call the NATIONAL CHILDRENS HOSPITAL the NATIONAL CHILDRENS HOSPITAL IRELAND. You couldn't make it up!

I think the Ireland is adequately implied within National. Pay peanuts, get monkeys?

To be fair, Terminal Two is an excellent name for an airport's second terminal. I'd say the consultants that advised that one got a damn sight more than €5,000.

Normally they save these releases until a Friday evening but...
Renaming of An Bord Pleanála cost €77,000 (https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2025/0701/1521317-an-bord-pleanala-renaming/)
The renaming of An Bord Pleanála to An Coimisiún Pleanála (ACP) has cost the State planning watchdog just under €77,000.
New figures provided by ACP show that the renaming has cost the State's flagship planning agency €76,921 and the largest component is a €22,045 spend on the installation of external over entrance signage and two corner projection signs with the new name at the agency’s Marlborough Street headquarters in Dublin.
The €76,921 outlay also included a spend of €18,450 on architect consultancy which provided design, coordination and project management services for internal ground floor signs and external signage.
The spend also included €18,450 on a radio ad campaign; €5,380 on a new sign installation cancellation fee; €6,363 on newspaper notices and €3,637 on the change of name on the corporate seal and rubber stamps.
