My Sumup terminal packed in over the weekend. Never had a fall or got exposed to extreme temperatures or anything like that. A mere 10 minutes after successfully using it to collect a fiver from a Free Now Taxi Save client it decided to brick itself. It just displays a device blocked message. According to Sumup's FAQ that's considered fatal - presumably planned obsolescence - and once it's out of guarantee you can fuck off and buy another one as far as they're concerned despite it being less than 7 years old.
Anywaysanall, I didn't bother contacting their support and just meekly bought a replacement in Harvey Norman's hardly normal sale for €19.90... €15.92 of which I'll never see again. Commission only, no subscription my bollox!

What an absolute scam.
Where do you normally keep it RC? I wonder if they're vulnerable to warmer temperatures as they age.

How to take card payments over the phone (https://www.sumup.com/en-gb/running-business/payments/taking-card-payments-over-the-phone/)
You might need a merchant account (whatever that is) but it might be an alternative?
-
Yes, I used the "Tap To Pay" option while necessary, Watty... and it is a useful back up option, I guess. However, it doesn't provide a Chip and PIN option so you'd have to resort to sending a payment link to circumvent that where required, I guess. I've also heard more technically minded users complain that standard consumer mobile phones don't have the same security features as a dedicated card terminal ought to have.
I keep it in the centre console box, MfH... and always have done. I did come across a suggestion from an internet poster who successfully challenged them in similar circumstances - receiving a refund after threatening a law suit (probably in the US) - that he was advised during an exchange with Sumup support that not charging the yoke regularly (whether it needs it or not) could be a contributory factor. That's something I'd certainly be "guilty" of having never considered that it might need charging unless it actually needed charging... and it has been quite idle for much of the last few months on account of the good weather.

Maybe Sumup makes the real money on selling readers. We've been looking at this the wrong way all along.
-
I priced one on their site and the cheapest option they had was a newer model called Solo Lite for €34 + VAT... whereas Harvey Norman are obviously selling off the older "AIR" model for 19.90. I'm guessing the Air one will become obsolete so I'll probably end up buying a more expensive one in due course... although I will then argue for my score back, particularly if the one I bought yesterday is still under warranty when that happens.

Funnily enough today is the last day to claim your FREE terminal with these guys...
https://share-eu1.hsforms.com/2u9GGdK7WTYSIqaiVZpnz-A2ew9ko
I have mine and it works a treat. Any jobs done before 3pm are in your account THAT day. And with less commission than sumup, a sleaky looking terminal and a connection that's practically bug proof (it has its own sim card) you'd be mad not to get your FREE one today. Actually you have to get it today because it's not FREE anymore from tomorrow on.

Can you send an invoice through sum up?
I stopped using them a couple of years ago.
-
Create an invoice on the SumUp app (https://help.sumup.com/en-IE/articles/2Egcjbyr34UzHIS8po83tB)

::cheers
Just someone I know who got caught out making a 2 hour round trip to Airport to collect a stranger who never showed up
He uses sum up..
I told him I always send them an invoice first for that reason.

I wonder if Sumup read this site and does it influence them :P Got an email just today...
We’re thrilled to announce that Tap to Pay on Android is now available in the SumUp app. With just your Android device, you can accept in-person, contactless payments. Start accepting payments anytime, anywhere with no extra hardware required.
-
To be fair, the new terminal is a damn sight quicker than the old one was. I'd probably recover the €15.92 it cost through time savings within 30 years ifn I had 30 years.
I got no reply from that other crowd, Horse.
-
Neither did I !
-
The free offer was only until the end of last month so maybe they want payment now. Hard luck chappies.
-
I applied before month end !
-
Me too. I have an acknowledgement email dated 30 June, nothing after that!
-
Right, I dunno. I got my brand new shiny bad boy. That's all I know.

Well, Tap to Pay has been available at least since I changed my phone in December 2023.
... but... I guess it wasn't that long after I posted http://intaxi.org/forum/index.php?topic=17995.msg269675#msg269675 (http://intaxi.org/forum/index.php?topic=17995.msg269675#msg269675) that my terminal bricked itself. I just tried chip and PIN on the new one and it doesn't replicate the PIN entry on the phone screen like what the old one did... author of my own downfall?

I think that's the same crowd as Horse mentioned... They seem to use various brands ending in 4 e.g. Shift4, Connect4, etc...
Seems like a good deal, to be fair... I might get around to ringing them to see what they've done with my application at some time.
