Title: Glen Hansard dead
Post by: watty on July 29, 2026, 01:16:55 pm
Glen Hansard dead at 56.  RIP

Singer-songwriter Glen Hansard dies in Dublin crash (https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2026/0729/1585555-glen-hansard-death/)

Quote
Oscar-winning songwriter and The Frames frontman Glen Hansard has died aged 56 in a road crash in Dublin, his publicist has confirmed.

The motorcycle crash happened near Strawberry Beds in Chapelizod in Dublin city.

... Glen Hansard will be remembered as one of Dublin and Ireland's most beloved native sons, who went from busking on the streets of his hometown to success with his band The Frames, to Academy Award glory with the song Falling Slowly, from the film Once, and on to a successful career as a solo artist.  He was one of Ireland's most acclaimed and influential musicians, who built an international career spanning more than three decades across music, film and theatre.

Born in Ballymun, Dublin, on 21 April 1970, Hansard began performing music at a young age, busking on the streets of Dublin before co-founding The Frames in 1990.  As the band's lead singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter, he helped establish The Frames as one of Ireland's most respected live acts, earning a devoted following through albums including Another Love Song, Fitzcarraldo, Dance the Devil, For the Birds, Burn the Maps and The Cost.  Hansard appeared in Alan Parker's 1991 film The Commitments, playing guitarist Outspan Foster. While acting was never his primary focus, the role introduced him to a much wider audience and remains one of his best-known screen performances.

... In 2002, Hansard became the original presenter of RTÉ's acclaimed music series Other Voices, helping to launch what has become one of Ireland's most beloved showcases for live music.

His international breakthrough came with the 2007 film Once, directed by John Carney, in which he starred opposite Czech musician Markéta Irglová.  The pair played two musicians who meet in Dublin and form a creative partnership, performing songs they had written together as The Swell Season. The film became a surprising global success after winning the World Cinema Audience Award (Dramatic) at the Sundance Film Festival.  At the 80th Academy Awards in 2008, Hansard and Irglová won the Oscar for Best Original Song for Falling Slowly, one of the most celebrated songs in contemporary Irish music.  The success of Once led to worldwide tours as The Swell Season and, in 2012, a Broadway adaptation of the film, featuring Hansard and Irglová's songs, which won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

... Alongside his work with The Frames and The Swell Season, Hansard enjoyed a successful solo career. {} His work earned multiple Grammy Award nominations, reflecting his continued influence as a songwriter and performer.

... He was closely connected with Ireland's community music projects, such as Dublin's annual Christmas Eve charity busk in support of the Dublin Simon community.

So sad.  Not really a 'rock' fan but loved his music & his passion for it.  And the movie, Once, is one of my favourites.

those strawberry bed little roads are appalling. i had an inkling it was either the end of tinker's hill or rugged lane the poor chap rolled his bike. it was tinker's hill.

RIP

His enthusiasm and tenacity was renowned and reached well beyond the world of rock music with unwavering commitment to highlighting and tackling social injustices including genocide in Palestine, homelessness in Ireland, the Russian invasion of Ukraine and water charges in Dublin.

"He didn't have fans - he had a flock"

He got most of the front page of the Irish Times today.  Very Impressive.  Can't remember the last time a non-politician got that much tribute.

Wow... a printed newspaper... that's a blast from the past. Did you know you can access all the newspapers online free of charge via the public library if you have a library card... which one would assume a man who still gets his fingers blackened reading the news has!

... or do you just buy the hard copy for special editions and suchlike?

Have a library card, and an online sub to the IT, but can't find the free option for the online IT on the Dun Laoghaire library website. I know that the physical paper is available to read within the library premises.

Maybe you have to do it from a computer inside the library?

A lot of the IT has gone a bit click bait IMO.

All this bollox like ....what holiday home can you buy for 500k in Wexford compared to Italy..

5 homes under 750k..get fukked

I absconded to Australia because Ireland is a dump...but I still miss the banter. Now I can't afford to move back to home. How is the government going to help me?

I just caught my husband having sex with a man.. could my husband be gay?

Etc etc etc

Anyway it's not worth a subscription but if you need to read anything on it click on the article then back out and turn your phone to airplane mode and the  relevant article will read properly without a sub.

Save yer money for crypto..

No. It works anywhere even during pandemics.

Edit: I think you're right as far as The Irish Times is concerned. It's not on my Fingal Borrowbox list anymore.

Had a look at my old Kindle... They used a different app during COVID '19 anall called Pressreader. I'm pretty sure one could take the Times on that but it mighta just been for COVID '19 anall... I've lost my library card now so I can't see if that one still works - I'm guessing it doesn't but if you have a library card to hand you could give it a try. IIRC you had to select Dublin City as your library but it accepted cards from any Irish library. I never really got used to it... my little Kindle screen was too small for a newspaper really but it was handy for the Fingal Independent which is only published online these days.

Public wake to be held for musician Glen Hansard (https://www.rte.ie/entertainment/2026/0731/1586048-glen-hansard-funeral/)

Quote
A public wake will be held for Glen Hansard in Dublin on Bank Holiday Monday followed by his funeral on Tuesday.

... A public wake will be held for Hansard in the Baroque Chapel at IMMA, Royal Hospital Kilmainham, on Monday 3 August between 11am and 4pm.  Hansard will lie in repose for those wishing to pay their respects.

The funeral will take place the following day at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin city centre at 1:30pm.  While the funeral will also be open to the public, access inside the cathedral will be limited given the numbers expected.  Music at the funeral will be provided by Hansard's friends and family.

The funeral will also be broadcast on the RTÉ News channel.

You might get someone famous in your taxi  :o :o :o

I'll have to look up where Killiney is on the map, just in case  :P
