Title: Boober fixed fares
Post by: SalubriousEd on August 18, 2026, 12:31:41 pm
I very rarely take an uber fixed fare, only if i need to get to a certain area and one pops up that will being me there. Sat on my arse here today and ive noticed a couple of fixed airport trips pop up at 14-15 euro....they were typically 19euro.....looks like they're starting to turn the screw tighter. Anyone else noticing it? Ive opted out of freenows 25% rip off jobs, rarely do uber fixed jobs, earnings are taking a serious hit but i just wont do these jobs as a matter of principle.

It's beyond me why drivers let them manipulate the market with their fare mind games, although I do accept the financial needs of some are such that they have to. I don't like, but will accept, the Craps right to charge whatever commission they like for their service, but the jiggery pokery with fares is sickening. The NTA put a lot of effort to come up with a fair fare, and all the meter hoops we have to jump through. Said a million times before that we could have it all our way.....unity for €3.95 per day with TaT would fix it for us. Having said that the AGM will be interesting to say the least.

There's ~10,000 drivers in Dublin and, statistically, there'll always be someone desperate for the next fiver who'll do these discounts.  The apps know this and abuse it  ::fight ::fight ::fight

The airport jobs from the city are priced almost always through the tunnel and the price you see is after commissions and tolls.

Only worth it if you can get a job out there.Otherwise you could be getting as low as €22 to the airport and an empty run back.

Also I've noticed the prices increasing on offers that I've previously declined... Might only be a euro extra but they know exactly what they're doing. They routinely offer different prices on the same job to different drivers in the UK depending on how desperate the algo thinks you are.

Best to leave it off if you can avoid it as it's only going to get worse.I've deleted Freenow for good and it won't be getting reinstalled. Uber could be next.

I might have to go back to the ranks and do it the hard way.

Not noticed any reduction myself but I wouldn't be up above in Dublin much. In fact over 80% of the ones I've covered have been settled on the meter. However, with the schools out for the summer there's no traffic at all in these parts in the mornings. The problem I see with that is how it might affect fixed fares from September. Uber is obviously very adept at getting the fare extremely close to the meter (in my experience anyway) so it's obviously using averages from data collated over time. Assuming the men are inputting the correct metered fares during the school holidays that data is liable to feed into those averages going forward.

As I mentioned on another thread I did have an experience that I've never seen before on the app last Friday morning. When I dropped a ride at DAP I drove away as normal but when I got some way down the old road towards Santry the app told me to go back to the front of the queue at DAP... presumably Zone 18 car park. As I had a prior engagement I declined, pressing the dismiss button. It then said I had some sort of fast pass that I could use until 18:00 or some such to skip the line at DAP. I never used it but it did get me to thinking they could easily reduce fares to DAP if combined with that "reward". There's Lads queuing for hours for Free Now jobs @20% commission plus €3 DAP fee...  and others queuing in the Kesh (fair enough they'll more often than not rob their victims to compensate) for at least an hour when it's quiet. Surely there's plenty who'd speculate a few notes off a fare to get away as soon as they drop?
Title: Re: Boober fixed fares
Post by: Rat Catcher on August 18, 2026, 02:23:21 pm
The main issues I've noticed with the fixed fares are:

The 8pm / 8am bug i.e. if a client orders before 8pm it's priced on rate 1 regardless of the fare being wholly or partially completed on rate 2 so there's a big hit for the driver there. Obviously it works the other way round in the morning but, alas, there's no gain for the driver as the metered fare then applies... assuming the driver enters the correct metered fare.

Bank holiday rates are never applied unless the BH happens to be a Sunday.

I guess it's also noteworthy how popular the set fares have become with drivers, at least in North County Dublin. Initially the men were obviously apprehensive with lower fares lingering on the screen for several seconds. Anything over €40 after commission always disappeared at the speed of light but now they all disappear in less than an instant. I think some of the men might not have realized that the fare shown is after commission... to be fair some probably don't even know how much commission they pay! These days, as a rule of thumb if it's on the screen long enough to read the desto it's not worth doing!

The city may well be different but obviously the meter is a relatively new concept where I am and fixed fares have always been the norm... al least for locals/regulars. Fixed fares definitely appeal to many clients in these parts and the fact is they use more taxis when they know with certainty what the price is in advance.

My situation at home means i have to work 9-6. If TaT could guarantee me 600 a week on those hours I'd happily pay the membership and fees and uninstall the other apps, top up the 600 with some rank work and I'd be grand.
Title: Re: Boober fixed fares
Post by: Rat Catcher on August 18, 2026, 03:01:01 pm
All that's guaranteed in this game is that if you don't work you don't earn. At €30/week surely it's worthy of support?

The problem with Uber is nothing to do with fixed fares, it's good old fashioned below cost selling. Uber always discounts fares by 10-30% which is currently financed out of it's own deep pockets. As with Free Now that won't last forever, it'll be passed on to drivers either directly or through increased commission with additional (notably VAT) costs. In other markets Uber seems to favour variable rates of commission so you'd pay significantly more at quiet times.

True Rat, guarantee was not the best choice of words, but ye know what i mean. Getting me tax moneys together at the moment, then I'll join up to TaT. I've been tellin all me passengers to download the TaT app and I'm not even on it yet. Someone above mentioned seeing a fixed price rise a bit after refusing it, i once saw a fixed job in kinseally, i refused it, almost immediately, literally within 2 or 3 seconds it flashed on my screen again as a regular job.
Title: Re: Boober fixed fares

Reappearing as a normal job is just the client trying another option, I guess.

Rates fluctuating doesn't surprise me but I can only really comment on my own experience. I find the fixed fares are only ever lower than the meter if I've 3 or 4 passengers or sometimes with 2pax but only by pennies. I have noticed some fixed fare clients switch back to normal fares... not sure if that's simply because they realize the meter is what always applies (most regulars of a morning are 1pax going to the station) and conclude (not necessarily correctly these days) that the normal rate might appeal to more drivers... or, maybe, they find drivers to be more pleasant when the meter is running!
Title: Re: Boober fixed fares

I have heard mention of certain non local drivers not putting the correct metered fare in if it's lower than the fixed fare. I wouldn't do that myself but I can understand why they do it... the client has agreed a price so is highly unlikely to pay any attention to the meter... in fact, most are gone before you total it when they're paying by app.

When you back a horse you dont care what price just that it wins .I changed my taxi work I go out to get a Purse .Im going to log back in to Free Now havent done any work for them in 10 months ..So going to go out get a ton a day buck and a bit on Saturday and Sunday I dont want to do nights .Now I listened to lads complaining abouth freight .I never worked for Vinny on National .But how much was their weekly freight / How much did they take on Corporate .How much did the average driver pocket ? I doubt there is much difference between what City Cabs took in the GOOD OLD DAYS and now % wise .

If you paid 19 you were robbed. You should take that up with Uber but the most likely explanation is that the (immigrant?) driver entered a much higher figure than actually recorded on his meter to make sure he got the full "fixed" fare... some of those lads have very basic English language skills so could be forgiven for thinking fixed means fixed, I guess.

My point, however, is not really relevant to what you paid or why... You said the meter is NEVER less than the fixed fare up above in Dublin. In the example given it clearly was!

I wonder do different drivers get different rates... I got 7 jobs from Uber yesterday... 6 of them were so-called fixed fares and they were all settled on the meter... although one would have reverted to the fixed fare had I not forgot to add the €2.30 toll:

Clinstown - Balbriggan (1pax) Meter 20.00 FF 26.62
Gormanston - Local (1pax) Meter  8.60 FF 9.88
Balbriggan - Naul (1pax) Meter 16.30 FF 19.45
Stamullin - Gormanston (1pax) Meter 10.60 FF 12.22
Gormanston - Dundalk (2pax) Meter 88.40 FF 88.13*
Dundalk - Local - Metered Fare.
Drogheda - Local (1pax) Meter 10.00 FF 10.42

* forgot toll so the 88.40 I input was separated to interpret the meter fare as 86.10 hence it was settled at that rate with the 2.30 toll added as a refund.

Notably... 6 of those 7 fares were picked up outside of the areas covered by my SPSV Driving Licence which I guess serves to demonstrate how nationwide apps have expanded our horizons hence significantly increasing potential productivity.

Clear from the above that the client can't lose, particularly when traffic is bad, as only the driver can lose. It's a despicable practice from UberAlles, and drivers who support it should be shot with balls of their own shite.

From the bloke who only stopped covering fixed fares because they didn't count towards the bonuses he chases!

Easy to say when you have a pension and rental income in your back pocket before you set out to take the bread out of the mouths of working class cab drivers, hungry cunt!

You obviously have no idea how the trade works beyond the pale. The meter is a relatively new concept and a lot of our clients aren't going anywhere without knowing what you want to take them there.

Drink and tinternet aren't always the best combination. I read something that wasn't intended and reacted irrationally and for that I apologise.

FTR I have no issue with anyone driving a cab, pensioners, double jobbers, migrant workers, etc included. We've had all those discussions over many years on Roy's and on here and I've consistently concluded that blokes don't generally drive cabs if they don't need the income... and even if there's some that only do it because they like it or it suits them as an alcohol free way of socialising or getting out and about, so what, that's ok too. By point of fact the less hours any of the rest of ewes spend in your cabs the better for me... better a man does his 20 or 30 hours than rent his plata nua out to a full-timer with a load of childers to feed and educate...

Nothing to do with Irish law as they just don't wanna bother paying someone to adjust every incorrect fare.

One day I had to ring them over login issues and I was talking to someone in a call center and it sounded like they were at a football match.

I'd say it's more to do with them lowering the rates up above in Dublin.

Done a Tap local in Drawda this afternoon. We weren't gone 134 yards and the passenger asked how much is that I owe you. Outside of the big cities - although I'd class Drawda as a city these days, the traffic can be every bit as bad as up above in Dublin and not a bus lane in the whole town - they don't really understand a taximan not knowing what he wants for a job. Anywaysanall I had a quick glance at the screen and decided it was a tenner. €9.80 on the clock when we got to the desto and she gave me 15, happy days!

Actually, I did have an issue with an Uber fare a few months back. It was actually my fault, my phone packed in (I had dropped it cracking the screen a month or so previously) just as I picked up the job which was c.40 to Airside. When I dropped the passenger I rebooted the phone and the screen worked sufficiently to go through the motions of starting and clearing the job but it recalculated the fare based on picking up and dropping at the same location. I rang the helpline on that occasion and the very special agent said there was no need to do anything because all fixed fares are examined and adjusted within 5 days or something like that. Had a bit of a bull and cow with him as we both knew he was lying... if it was looked at they'd just see a less than one minute job. Left it for a week and rang again, the bloke that answered that time was far more helpful and I got the full fare commission free, in fact they paid the full fixed fare which was about a fiver above the maximum amount permitted by law as calculated by the Dublin centric taximeter.... but it kinda suggests they never adjusted any fares without being asked to?

All i could do was laugh and tell him i hope he's learned hisbl lesson

I was looking at some social media posts - second hand, the only one I'm on is WhatsApp - on foot of the men's protest and there certainly seems to be a belief among some riders that it's only the dirty ungrateful foreigners giving out and refusing to cover the fixed fares up above in Dublin, the jist being that if you'd prefer a salt of the earth dub order a fixed price taxi. Dunno how widespread that belief is and I can only speculate that it's obviously Uber agitating far right extremists to divide and conquer?

I've have good days with it. I'll PM you my Tap takings. My best TAP days have certainly been when I've worked up above in Dublin for a few hours and that's what I was planning to do when Uber fuck up the fares out here. However, it's not something I want to do, I didn't enjoy the few short shifts I done up there of late whereas I do (usually) enjoy working the Fingal/Mead/Loud border, particularly as I can do that passively which suits me. Obviously I'm in the fortunate position of owning my own plate and driving a heavily subsidised car... that combined with Mrs Catcher having a decent wage and not having a particularly extravagant lifestyle means I'm happy enough with 2 or 3 decent days a week.

In summary, I'd be pretty sure you'll readily beat my takings if you're working up above in Dublin... although there are bits and pieces elsewhere. Yesterday, for example, I got Balbriggan to Swords for €50 in used notes inc tip and today I got Balbriggan to Drogheda (regular I had last week as well), a local in Balbriggan and a local in Drogheda. I've had a local or two in Navan as well. IMO it's a no brainer. When Uber start charging riders more than they pay drivers I reckon a lot of their clients might migrate to Tap. To date - without any prompting any discussion - several clients have suggested that Free Now is the one they switched from.

Not yet. As I have my cash book open I'll paste the % I've used each day. It seems to do 4 kilos per 1% of charge... to date. I did notice it was closer to 3.5 today as I had the heater on most of the time so I guess as it gets colder that could become an issue. However, I have my Ionity sub and it'll charge from 20% to 50% in under 10 minutes so I don't envisage it ever becoming a huge inconvenience. I did make a couple of business trips up north after my regular day's work. Of course Murphy's law dictated that they were busier than normal days so I had to charge up the road in Gormanston on the way. The thing with fast charging is that it slows as it fills so when I was going to Belfast I opted to just charge to 60% on the way up and topped it up to 60% again the next morning for the return trip on the Falls Rd. Interestingly, Ionity (with sub) charge 46c/KWH in the Free State and 46p/KWH up in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

My charging policy is:
Over 70% remaining - Don't charge
55-70% remaining - Charge to 90%
Less than 55% remaining - Charge to 80%
1st of Month - Charge to 100%
First time it goes below 37% each month - Initial charge to 40% then charge to 80%

Hence the figures below might not be exact usage per day as they are the amount put into the tank each night.

Those figures are for home charging. Additionally I've used the Ionity sub as follows:
Date   KWH   €   stg£
15/04/2026   41.45   19.15
18/04/2026   28.32   13.09
19/04/2026   22.55   10.42
08/05/2026   20.24   9.36
04/07/2026   23.39   10.81
09/07/2026   9.31   4.3
19/08/2026   35.71   16.5
20/08/2026   22.44   12.13   10.37
04/09/2026   29.92   13.82
25/09/2026   19.77   9.14
02/10/2026   25.87   11.95

From memory the first few were before I got the home charger and the others were either for business trips taken outside of my normal (if there's such a thing) working day or because I didn't charge at night due to having a sleepover in mummy's house once or twice, being too drunk to remember or be arsed at least once with two or three in the course of a "normal" shift.... at least once to get home after a country run for IBT and another occasion I remember intending to continue into a long shift but didn't bother after buying a box of fried chicken to devour while charging up above in Finglas so that was a waste of time, money and exercise bicycle hours all in one!

For long non-taxi journeys, I think the ABRP app can calculate what option gives you the fastest journey when using chargers.  Usually the 'splash+dash' option you mentioned is best as the battery fills fastest when the battery is low.

I have the Ionity sub so I tend to plan around their sites where necessary which isn't very often tbh. Looking at the numbers to date I doubt I'll get full value from the subscription, I'll have to review that when it expires and decide what might suit thereafter. While splash and dash might well suit when you have more time to fill on the way back or whatever I guess we should also consider the time it takes to divert to a filling station, park and connect/disconnect the leads etc... and you're gonna get wet ifn it's raining... at least with Ionity I've yet to encounter a filling station with a canopy like what the filthy polluting environmental vandals get.

However, there is however a however... Mad as it might seem there's a huge pschyolgical plus to having the sub... the €120/year is an historic cost that is well written off so irrelevant from the thought process thereafter... the current 46c/KWH equates to 30c per 1% of charge for my vehicle so that's the only element I might consider when fast charging which isn't hugely more expensive than my day rate home supply which is 28c/KWH inc VAT and is the same as my peak rate (5-7pm). Expanding on that somewhat questionable logic... yesterday, for example, I took €120 and used 30% of my battery - which was definitely on the heavy side, back of the envelope calculations suggest you'd get a monkey in takings from 90-100% of the tank of a summers evening up above in Dublin - which at Ionity (sub) rates would cost c.€9 (for 30%). That's clearly less than diesel would cost as a % of takings at current rates. Charging at home cuts that by a little over 50% using a weighted average cost basis... but the numbers kinda prove that EVs could be cost effective for those living in apartments. I'm not suggesting private motorists would be wise to run out and pay full price for them but a taximan living in a flat up above in Dublin could certainly save a few notes on fuel on top of the subsidies Govt might give him to buy the yoke. Of course, as you well know, maintenance costs are another question of a different colour altogether!

Someone clever over on Boards.ie did the sums about Ionity a few years ago.  I *think* you had to be doing over 100 kW/wk for the sub to make sense.  E&OE...
Title: Re: Boober fixed fares

That doesn't seem right. Obviously there'll be some minor differences depending on what supplier you compare with and such like but the difference between Ionity's full subscription rate and it's standard rate is 31c/KWH (77c-46c)... 400KWH at those rates equates to c.€124 saving with the sub which would cover the sub with a couple of euros left over for half a cup of Circle K coffee. That's more like 8KWH/week?

I'm exercising what few brain cells I have left here but I really can't see where 100 KWH/week came from... unless I'm gone totally doolally... maybe they thought the sub was €120/month?

I'm not great with quantifying what are largely qualitative factors if I'm honest. Obviously, standing out in the rain would leave you open to catching a cold resulting in downtime, medical costs with, perhaps, some broader macro economic consequences depending on various factors that may hold positions of relevance in such equations. All food for thought.

There is a question in that, however, that I will find an answer to if I remember next time I have cause to use a fast charging station... unless someone else can answer it in the meantime... can you run the heater in the car while it's charging?

So are you suggesting that a Tax deduction for EV drivers for wet weather gear should be applied or do lads pumping juice also get wet .I will concede that most if not every EV Charger seems to lack weather shielding for those wishing to avail of its service .If we were to contact the Relevant authority on this issue would it be Oilskins boots and umberells tax deductable or what remedial solution would you suggest for weather related hardship .No sun cover in Summer Glasses and factor 15 ,Could or should also be offset against earnings .

I probably didn't say it right.  I think they were comparing Ionity's [sub + kWh fees] versus Ecars' [sub + fees]. Ecars sub is ~€5/month but their charges are higher than Ionity's.  Using Ionity upto 100 kW/wk was more expensive than Ecars.  Only after 100 kw/wk is Ionity cheaper than Ecars.  Something like that.

I thought I was missing something alright. I bought the Ionity one without doing much research to be honest. A couple of the local taximen out here suggested it's a good deal and it's convenient enough for me. I'll have to have a look at eCars when my subscription runs out. There's a fast charger in the soccer club car park that isn't on any of the maps and nobody seems to know about. I don't know what brand it is so I'll have to check that out. Other than that Applegreen is the only other one that's within a 5 minute drive.

Try the plugshare app for the soccer car park...

If you're mostly charging at home and only occasionally using outside chargers, it might work out cheaper to have no subs at all and just pay the higher cost the odd time you use them?  I use Ecars as an example but their sub is ~€5/month or €60/yr.  If the difference between the sub and no-sub price was, say, 10cent/kW, would you charge enough to justify that €60 sub?  That'll keep your spreadsheet busy over the weekend  :P

I know but I'm tied in for the year now. I'll have to reevaluate it when my sub expires. I reckon I need to get over 400kw for the year for the Ionity one to make financial sense, I'll look at the others closer to the time. I'm up to 279kwh for the 7 odd months that I've had the Ionity sub but that includes the few charges before I got the home charger installed. They do have a middle option too with a lower annual sub and higher rates compared to the higher sub but lower than the on demand rate so plenty to analyse when I have the full year's data.

I can't remember if you said you had heated seats RC but it's widely considered the best option for staying warm when you're concerned about the battery. Apparently it uses less juice to heat one seat than the whole car by the heater.

Unfortunately not. They were only on the higher spec model which I mighta bought if I didn't think the one I bought was a grand and a half more than it was until after it was registered... but then, time was the enemy as well so I probably wouldn't have trusted getting the tinted windows swapped out anyway given that there was a 17 and a half large grant on the line. TBH, heating my arse never really appealed to me but I understand now that it's a fuel economy thing in EVs!

Would a tin of Heinz baked beans work as a substitute?

Get some thermal underwear and eat the beans then create your own central heating..

There's a chance that the seats have the heating element in already and just needs to be software unlocked.Costs them more to take the electronics out sometimes.

I did two hours starting at midnight Saturday and used 25% of the battery. With the heating and lights anall running fuel economy was down (25%) to 3 kilos per 1% of charge. Of course being on rate 3 kept the % of takings figure low. Using my domestic supply (as I did) to recharge the cost for 25% based on last month's weighted average cost per % would equate to c.€3.62. With a takings figure of €137 that works out at c.2.6%. If one were to take the Ionity (full subscription) rate of 46c/KWh (30c/% of charge) the figure would be close enough to double that at €7.50 or 5.5%.

Obviously, even the Ionity figure (which is ignoring the €120/year sub) compares favourably to diesel but extrapolating those numbers would suggest that even if you kicked off with your battery charged to 100% you'd likely have to recharge to do anything over 8 hours of a cold Saturday night. However, those were obviously the busiest two hours of any potential longer shift and I was working outside of the city so I guess just pottering around the city with some hours being quieter more often than not you probably would get out kicking off with a fully charged battery?

Of course, the irony of it all is that they're only cheaper to run because there's no duty on the fuel - the fuel that is generated through burning fossil fuels. In reality when you take into account power factor and conversion losses at various points of the convoluted process and the weight of the battery these EVs require at least twice the amount of fossil fuels to be burnt as would be the case for a vehicle that directly burns it's fossil fuel supply and they would cost at least twice as much to run as a vehicle directly powered by fossil fuel if the electricity was subject to the same rate of Government duty as applies to vehicles that directly burn fossil fuel.
