Listening to Fuckwits talking about strikes over fixed fares .You are All Independent Business owners you do not have to do them .It really is that simple .Passengers shop around like they do for ESB or Gas or Drivers shop around for Petrol or Tyres or Service its Supply and Demand ,Market forces .
I fortold all of this years ago called it WORKCAPTURE .Now the same people protesting are the same people who Offered to Cover Halo jobs with out the PUC .Now by doing these jobs they signilled their willingness to ignore the meter while others like Me refused to .Now when Fixed fares are offered they cry about the same non metered fares they were willing to work when they thought they were gaining an advantage over other Independent Business owners .Never complained when they were stickered up Ambassadores now asked to pay 25% or cover fixed fares they complain .YOU TOLD THE DISPATCHERS you were willing to work without the PUC if you did 10 jobs you were down TWENTY EURO before freight .Now because you told the Apps you were willing to work for less than the metered fares they restored the PUC then Discounted it back to the Customers with fixed fares or increased freight from you .
So while lads are complaining you made this rod for your own back .You were all warned and most of you abused the one who warned you .Told you there was a logorythm before they told you with their Gold ,Silver ,Bronze drivers .Diverted work to Ambassadores .You lost this battle before most of you even knew you were in a fight YOU DRIVERS sold your soles trying to fuck over other drivers now lads think that those drivers you fucked over are now going to withdraw their service because you are getting a dose of your own medicine .You reap what you Sew .You built the monster .So In short look in your Mirror Meter and ask who was the First person in the Industry to give Discounts ? Answer You the man in the Mirror when you discounted the Metered fare Pick Up Charge .
Again who was willing to pay out of their pockets for access to Airport to fuck over the men with Kesh Passes he lives in your mirror as well .A lot of taxidrivers are like a teenager with a Tattoo couldnt wait to get one then regret it even though you were warned .Its your monster now own it .You built the Apps with your willingness to discount and run around for Gold ,Silver and Bronze best boy stars .
Now tell me Im Wrong !

Think logically who would benifit from a Strike highlighting cheaper fares .Who asked for this Review .Who is behind this Strike Nonsence .Where is the Lad from Cork who organised the last Strike gone .Only thing I saw come out of the Review was Conformation that fixed fares are Legal the Metered fare is the Maximum .Nothing on Tech Charges or Booking Fees .(A booking fee is not a Pick Up Charge ) Imagine RTE or Newspapers .Taxi drivers striking preventing people from going to work because they dont like competition .And loads of Free Advertising for the Apps .

Not just UBER .Every App is selling you back work that use to be yours .Lads with Free Now branding running 4 other apps .That boat has sailed 42 .The race to the bottom is completed .Free Now offering better terms to lads who cover short trips from airport .Like I always said only a line of Code decides who gets Priority .If they know your happy to travel further for a pick up than the actual fare thats what they feed you .Some lads out in area 18 are tech savvy know if they only take long jobs they will be offered them first .
Whether waiting for a lift home from the airport or wanting to add more stops to your journey, Freenow’s new advancements will make it easier and quicker for you to get where you want to go. The new features include the Airport Fastpass, a Multistop feature that allows you to add up to four stops to your journey, and the Fleetview Programme.
Airport Fastpass
The Airport Fastpass technological solution to improve the experience of both passengers and taxi drivers at the airport.
At the moment, many taxi drivers waiting in the virtual queue will reject low-value trips because, after waiting for hours, they do not want to lose their place in the queue. With FastPass, they will be able to accept these trips in exchange for priority on their next return to the airport. Removing this barrier will make it all the easier for passengers to get a taxi after they’ve disembarked their flight and want to get home.
Once they complete the trip and return to the airport, they will be placed in the Fastpass queue, which will allow them to receive a new trip from the airport much faster.
Multistop
Multistop is a new feature designed to improve the experience for both passengers and taxi drivers, allowing up to four intermediate stops to be added to a single journey. Passengers can easily enter these stops from the app, while taxi drivers receive them fully integrated into their navigation system, without affecting the flow of the journey. This means that the next time you’re planning a journey, you can pick up friends and family on the way.
This option is now available in multiple counties and towns throughout Ireland, making journeys more flexible, comfortable and transparent for everyone.
The Fleetview Programme
The Fleetview programme consists of high-precision mapping to improve our route efficiency. Given the lack of public information on lanes and streets for taxi drivers in Ireland, Freenow by Lyft will map the streets of cities and towns to help passengers reach their destination faster and taxi drivers have more efficient journeys.
This technology will use a dedicated ground fleet fitted with small Fleetview devices on the windshield to collect high-fidelity geographic data focused exclusively on the country’s road infrastructure (road objects, lanes, signs, etc.). This information is essential for feeding the maps that are integrated into the Freenow by Lyft app.
Danny O’Gorman, General Manager at Freenow by Lyft Ireland, emphasises the importance of the new tech innovations:
Our focus is on creating a seamless travel experience, whether through Airport FastPass, Multistop journeys, or our newest initiative, the Fleetview Programme. By mapping Ireland’s road network ourselves, we are enabling drivers to access highly localised data that can improve estimated arrival times, cut down on kilometres driven without passengers, and support a more efficient experience for both drivers and passengers.
The use of this programme ensures that map data is fresh, local and strictly complies with data protection regulations, including the GDPR. Detailed information about the data protection setup can be found https://www.free-now.com/mapping/ (https://www.free-now.com/mapping/)
All these technological innovations are available immediately in the taxi driver app, setting a new standard of accuracy and service in the taxi sector.

Did you ever get that bonus from Free Now / MyTaxi, erm?
I'm not sure what they are hoping to gain from a strike - or who they are. Abolishing the national maximum fare regulation probably isn't a realistic outcome and NTA (theoretically) destroying the trade outside of the big cities with a new national minimum rate card would be counter productive. I think NTA have already suggested making us buy smart meters so I guess they could use that technology to geofence any minimum prices order but even that is probably a long shot. More likely that we'll pay the grand or whatever it might be for the new clever meters and they'll conclude that the current system is good enough.
Uber probably has a lot more to gain from drivers highlighting the availability of lower rates to the very clients whose commutes we are disrupting. Similarly, it is bound to lead to calls for "proper Uber" from consumer groups, calls that could be readily satisfied by lifting the current temporary moratorium on the issue of saloon hackney plates. Of course, that would likely ultimately find favour with many of the very migrant drivers who are manning the picket lines as it would free them from the grips of the platelords and allow them run their own businesses while passing on some of the cost savings to the travelling public. Such a strategy would also find favour within (local) Govt as it would serve to fully restore a service that provides a realistic alternative to private car ownership, particularly in areas with no, or significantly overstretched, bus or rail services.
That said, I will support any group's withdrawal of service myself as I always have. As noted, I have no idea which union(s) is/are organising or supporting this action but the last protest produced an unexpected benefit in the formation of the Tap A Taxi Cooperative Society so, who knows, this one may generate similarly beneficial results. I guess it's possible (however improbable) that sensible demands such as a ban on below cost selling, a cap on surge/technology fees and a maximum prices order governing base fees/commission charged by licensed dispatch operators could be on this crowds agenda?
It's unfortunate timing for Tap A Taxi. Given that the firm evolved from industrial action one would assume it will have to support any further strikes by switching it's service off for the duration of any official withdrawal of service. Pissing off the clients it's put considerable effort into attracting may well be a bitter pill to swallow.

To be fair there's no shortage of taximen buying brand new EVs... must be some money in that game!

So the Strike is Thursday 13 th Read the Poster PEACEFUL Protest in capitals .No named individual or organiser but I think I know who is behind it .So The idiots do not understand the Regulation .The Meter is the MAXIMUM fare .The Dispatcher YOU work for may offer a lower fare .This is not a Discount just a lower fare than the metered LEGAL MAXIMUM FARE .it is your decision if you work for them or not .There are metered fare Apps like Tap App ..People saying Dispatchers are charging more .They can legally do that .UBER or FREE NOW are NOT TAXI APPS .They are Booking apps that taxi drivers utilize to achieve fares .That is their legal status .They have Dispatchers Licences to allow them Dispatch the fares to licenced drivers who are covered by the Maximum Fare .If The Booking App charges a Booking Fee that is a Private arrangement between the rider and the Booking App a separate contract from the one we have with the Apps ..Now all the reviews and protests wont change this its a commercial arrangement which has two parts .The passenger and the App and the App and the Service Provider . The Taxi regulation only covers the part of the contract between the Dispatcher and the licenced driver ,the other part is commercial .Now if you think blocking the streets and RTE and other media asking why you are protesting and you say because UBer and Free Now charge you less and think you are going to get any sympathy .More likely Rural TD will say so UBER is cheaper and then look to introduce Rural Rideshare which will see more licenced taxies working the big cities by renters .
Asked this before Who organised last years protests who asked for a review of the industry .Did any of these people ever read the Goodbody report .If I was a Dispatcher I would be laughing me bollox off at whoever decided this was a good idea to give us free advertising .I would bet a lot of lads protesting will have UBER or Free Now stickers .Never complained when they were ambassadors being fed the work .Now when you get fucked over you complain .Too late you created this monster .
-
The objectives stated seem perfectly reasonable to me. As you note licensed drivers are subject to a maximum prices order and other regulations. Surely it's time licensed dispatch operators were similarly regulated.
This is the eFlyer I received:
(https://i.postimg.cc/vH1TTCD2/IMG-20261001-WA0010.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/PPjTF3W1)
It seems to be from another new union, Voice Of Taxi Drivers Ireland.
I'm not a member of that or any other union and I don't think I'll be able to attend on the day in question but I will support the action by either finishing work before noon or withdrawing my service for the entire day... and I will support any withdrawal of service called in conjunction with their campaign.
-
So any body printing an AI poster and you wont go to work .Who is behind this ? Is it a 4 year old kid with Grok on his Eye Phone .PEACEFUL PROTEST why would it be otherwise ? To Ensure Transparancy for Passengers UMM so they are in favour of FIXED FARES I take from that .
-
I have to agree with John anyone could get making up these posters on a smartphone without even going near a printer.
-
We can but speculate but I'd read that as wanting to restrict surcharges imposed by apps and, perhaps, improved in-car information on how the meter calculates the maximum fare permitted by law.
We are a very diverse group so it is impossible to pander to every whim of every driver. Most folk are selfish so there will naturally be some disagreement with seeking a "level playing field". Those of us who own our own plates and operate heavily subsidised vehicles obviously have nothing to gain from such a principle but, for me, it is an ideological matter and a principle I wholly support. At the very least the corrupt lottery for WAV grants ought to be replaced with an orderly queue based on years experience driving a taxi within the rental sector.
-
I spoke to a barrister and he explained to me what I posted .They are BOOKING Apps Service Providers to the Taxi industry not Taxi Apps .UBER provide the same service to restaurants .UBER also hire Boats and Planes .Air BnB are not landlords they are BOOKING APPS .The only people covered by the Maximum Fare act are licenced TAXI DRIVERS .So I really do not know what they think the NTA can do .Like I said free advertising for the apps .RTE and The Sun or Mirror will report Taxi drivers protest over lower fares for Partygoers .
-
Did you tell the bloke in Costa they cannot operate without a licence issued by NTA and point him to NTAs statutory obligations under Taxi Regulation Act 2003 (as amended)?
-
Uber and Free Now have dispatch licences and offer fares in line and not in excess of the metered fares .Totally compliant .Their idea of surge pricing is pre fare ie booking fees or reservation fees .Sort of like ticketmasters .They charge a booking fee ,Got into trouble with the Oasis tickets for surge pricing ..Now the issue is if they can regulate one Booking Platform and not another ?
-
They can regulate them all. In fact they have a statutory obligation to do so.
-
They can regulate them all. In fact they have a statutory obligation to do so.
UM can the regulate them they are commercial entities ?
-
As are we.
NTA, for example, has a statutory obligation to promote competition. Below cost selling hampers it's effectiveness in that regard and must be banned.
-

I will pick up what you just dropped and ask How do you promote competition when there is an upper sealing of the Maximum taxi fare ? the only way to promote competition is by promoting cheaper fares .In fact a case could and possibly is being made to the NTA that the advent of rideshare and fixed fares would be competition for licenced taxi metered transport providers .Beware what you ask for because what you say might not be what others hear .!
-
NTAs statutory obligation to promote competition includes but is not limited to competition on price. As far as price is concerned NTA is responsible for setting the maximum legal fare which it does through a metered system. Within that parameter any firm or driver may charge whatever they like and even outside of that parameter any driver may charge any amount he likes without limit with the written consent of his passenger.
However, allowing firms to engage in the practice of below cost selling is anti-competitive as it merely allows those with sufficient resources to monopolise the market. Similarly, advances in technology dictate that the bigger rideshare platforms can readily influence perception as far as demand is concerned and can use that perception to manipulate the market in such a way as the riders are charged inflated surge fees while drivers are paid the minimum they will accept based on what real rather than perceived demand is. These are the issues NTA needs to address in regulating licenced dispatch operators.
-
You should advise your man in Costa to study two key documents:
1) Taxi Regulation Act 2003 (as amended)
2) Uber's "Taxi Fixed Price" Terms and Conditions as stated within it's rider app.
-
I like your use of the word Perception .Every licenced driver has the option to take the fare or refuse the app .You opine NTAs statutory obligation to promote competition includes but is not limited to competition on price. Exactly what I said .UBER ot OTHERS possiblbly some group who block roads can say .It is your statitory duty to promote competition .We want Rideshare licence to be introduced .Im sure that idea has been furnished to the present review .You would think after wanting double jobbers out we got door signs .Wanting lads from outside the area restricted we got shiney signs .Wanting dodgey NCT cars out we got 9 year rule .At what stage will this industry stop self flagellation most of them would be welcomed into Opus Dei .
-
I appreciate that we are getting quite technical - given that neither you nor your learned advisors understand the very basics as far as the "sealing" on price is concerned what chance do you think the less academically minded among us have?
DoT and NTA have acknowledged the necessity to review regulation of dispatch operators with specific refence to advances in technology. It's up to drivers and other interested parties to highlight the loopholes that facilitate market manipulation and whatever other concerns and/or desires they may have.
We are in a somewhat different arena now. NTA is now headed by a professional with considerable achievement in the transport sector in Anne Shaw OBE. We will not get the same protectionist policies as we did under the mean and nasty Kathleen Doyle. Kathleen was like that granny that always had a bag of sweets in her handbag and might slip you a smoke when mummy and daddy weren't looking... we won't get everything we ask for and get everything we asked for redacted when we realise that everything we asked for wasn't what we wanted, that's pretty certain. However, protecting the trade against market manipulation is in all parties' interests except those intent on manipulating the market. As previously stated you can't please everyone and many may well be upset with whatever amendments are made to the regulatory framework but it is of utmost import that the market is protected from manipulation.
-
Pass this on to your man in Costa... In conjunction with Taxi Regulation Act 2003 (as amended) it'll help him understand (and maybe explain to you) that the maximum fare permitted by law as calculated by the taximeter is not the maximum fare permitted by law.

So if you dont know what your doing do nothing ,then if they do something you can do something .Do you remember the last protest .The Ukranian one where the troops parked up outside the City waiting to invade bit like Russia before the ructions .Who organised that and what was the agenda .Some lad from Cork was the spokesman dont think he was even a taxi driver .Might of been a dispatcher from Cork .I wont be getting involved with this .Until the people organising it are named and their connection to the Industry is known .I supported all the Previous stoppages .Sat on the Middle of O connell street to stop cars .Done me shift on the Nutts .Not interested in the agenda proposed here and the need to say PEACEFUL PROTEST ?
-
I'm sure many of our colleagues / competitors will reluctantly accept and appreciate your somewhat regrettable decision not to get involved.

Yeh and your point ? We can operate a waiver offer a fixed fare to OUR customer .This is just a digital form .Note the fare will be LESS than the Maximum .So all legal .Note the tech charge is not part of the fare but an additional charge for use of THEIR technology .Like I said about two hours and four goals ago at Lansdown road
-
My point was that your legal advisor (deliberately?) misled you in suggesting that there is currently a "sealing" on the amount we may legally chare our clients.
-

There is a Limit Licenced taxi drivers may charge .PUC ,Extras ,Metered fares .But A service Provider App or Dispatcher is not limited to what they charge for their services .We can of course recive gratuities but we do not enter them as part of the fare although it could be argued they are ?
-
There isn't any limit on what taxi drivers may charge. The maximum fare permitted by law as calculated by the taxi meter is not the maximum fare permitted by law. That's what you and you legal advisor don't seem to understand.
-
I have to agree with John anyone could get making up these posters on a smartphone without even going near a printer.
True. The proof of any pudding is in the eating. The men who have produced this flyer are voicing the concerns drivers have with how their trade is being regulated. My own main concern is that current regulation facilitates market manipulation which is anti-competitive. Of the other concerns expressed I don't disagree with any but I do appreciate that not all drivers will necessarily support all, in particular those with competitive advantage gained through plate ownership and/or operating heavily subsidised vehicles may not agree with promoting a level playing field. In any event, they have invited their colleagues/competitors to join them in protest action so I guess their credibility is dependent to some extent on the numbers that show up. That said, I think they are a new group (we have so many unions I've honestly lost track at this stage) so they may not necessarily expect a huge turnout for their first outing... it could be as much about spreading the word and attracting support from like minded colleagues/competitors at this stage.
-
.. and I will reiterate, the last strike gave birth to the Tap A Taxi Cooperative Society which is a remarkable success story. Ok, it cost us a few million in cuts to EV subsidies and might cost us a couple of grand each for a new smart meter but that's, arguably, a small price to pay. Anyway I got my EV grant so I don't give a flying fuck how much they cut it now!

That Uber fare waiver is interesting. Saying the fare bit of final cost will be less than the NTA max fare is playing with words when they immediately add on a tech fee. What's to stop them adding on extras for the 'office pizza fund' or the 'bosses holiday fund' etc. Taking it to the extremes, they could say the 'fare' is one cent but then add on whatever they wanted so they could charge what they like.
We used to be able to charge extra for putting luggage in the boot but it was all simplified to make it easy for the passenger to understand. The apps are taking us back to those 'complicated' days where they passenger has no idea what the fare is and how to choose between competitors.
I would lean towards what RC is saying. If you drive your mate to the pub for a tenner, you're giving discounts. The question is where does the industry draw the line. The danger is if the fare go too cheap, so will the taxi drivers with their vehicles. Change the breakpads? Maybe next week. Spend €100 on cleaning a soiled taxi? A dash of €5 fabreze instead? Buy a shiteheap instead of a new EV. And so on... The passengers loses out ultimately but Uber still makes it's quarterly profits for it's American shareholders.
-
Watty the taxi fare is regulated they do not charge above the metered fare .They add on booking fees .That has nothing to do with the TAXI PART .Two different things .One is a Private treaty between the passenger and UBER or Free Now .THEN they sell off the taxi part of that treaty to taxi drivers .The legal grey area is Booking Apps are private entities covered by commercial law .The Dispatch only occurs when the Commercial booking App divests the taxi task to Drivers .They then are legally required to make sure the fare does not exceed the Maximum Metered Fare and the Driver is Licenced and the Vehicle is licenced .Everything they are doing is within the law if not the Spirit of what we perceive we are entitled to ..
99.9999999999999% of drivers did not know this I did. I warned you all on Roys I was told I was a Fuckwit .I told lads they were running logarithms by not pre registering for a bonus to prove how it worked I was slagged by idiots who missed the point .I was exposing a plot not being to stupit to understand registering . The industry sold its sole for stickers Gold ,Silver and Bronze stars .Fuck You Ambassador privilege's .The passengers got weaned off street hails and into the Apps and Drivers done the damage to themselves .These Apps have the best legal minds can interpret things the way they want to see them not the way we want to see them .History is littered with industries that destroyed themselves through huberous .
-
Just for clarity .When you cover a Free Now or Uber taxi job .They are your client not the person in the car they are the cargo .The product to be delivered .Bet you didnt know that .in fact it was Drivers who agreed to pay 2 euro to hotels and pubs out of their earnings for work .And you wonder where the apps got the Idea Drivers dont want full fares .No Pick up Charges applied then pay hospitality fees rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl rofl..Fuck sake Im laughing that much a bit of piss just came out .
-
But the stars and medals look so cool on the app..... 8) 8) 8) lol
-
12000 + licence holders and some unknown who dosent put his name or anything on a poster wants us to stop working .
-
Fuckwit is a tad harsh, erm... the men can be very cruel. Poorly advised might be a better way of putting it. Any driver or any firm can charge any amount provided the rider waives his right to have the fare calculated by the taximeter. As suggested, pass the documents referenced on to your legal man.
Obviously apps have brought a lot to the table. As far as stimulating demand goes they have put taxis in riders' pockets and use clever little tricks to predict when they can entice them to use a taxi including capitalizing on the addictive nature of screen based systems. They have also opened up a whole new world of work to drivers. Before we had apps we were tied to one depot with geographical limitations and the men who didn't subscribe to a depot were tied to the county or counties in respect of which they are licensed. Now there are no borders resulting in vastly improved productivity. Of course that costs money, the question must be how much is a fair price to pay. Obviously, improved productivity is beneficial to the environment in reducing dead mileage which is good for the ozone layer and helps reduce traffic congestion, both of which ought to appeal to (local) government and the population in general.
Did you ever get that bonus from MyTaxi/Free Now?
-
Any driver or any firm can charge any amount provided the rider waives his right to have the fare calculated by the taximeter.
Is that true? I'm thinking about those sunbed shops where the bad guys allegedly launder their money. Could a 'bad guy' get into his mate's taxi, waive the meter, and be charged €1,000 3 times a week with written receipts and launder his money that way? Maybe that's what the notebook and pen in the safety kit is for? Afterall, the courts more or less allow taxi drivers to be drug couriers nowadays.

The maximum fare applies to the Meter but you enter a Private treaty and agree a waiver .Its Private treaty not a taxi fare .Like I explained UBER the booking is Private Treaty but they then pass on the Taxi bit to us and that is governed by the Maximum fare as it is a Taxi Fare with UBER being the customer the passenger is just freight .Taxies doing School runs on a price is a Private treaty not a taxi fare .
-
Taxies doing School runs on a price is a Private treaty not a taxi fare .
Can you use the bus lanes if you're in a private treaty, i.e., not looking for a fare and not carrying a PSV passenger? You can't use the bus lanes if your taxi was hired to bring a parcel from A to B.

Wont be long before somebody calls a strike over that ?

Thats just Professional Poster .It did originally say PEACEFUL PROTEST .Im sure the clowns behind it read this forum .Pity they never read the actual taxi act .They are Protesting against UBER but what about Free Now 25% commission ? Very selective about what they accept .

October 2025...like FFS.....backwards D on the roofsign mentality.

So the Protest is against Uber fixed fares ? Now how would that effect you ? Oh you do them ! So why not just dump the Uber app .That solves your problem .RTE .Mirror .Sun all have stories and RTE Drivetime .Taxi drivers bring City to Standstill over UBER offering Cheaper fares .Millions of Euro worth of Free Advertising for UBER .You couldnt make up this nonsence .Still no actual Person fronting this .

Those roof signs don't look legit either? And lots of white men with raised fists & no comrades of colour ::fds

Of course he can as he could with any tradesman or business. However, it's one of those things that would stick out like a sore thumb if he was ever audited by Revenue and would undoubtedly be passed on to CAB. Renting a plate and passing the used notes off as takings would probably be a less obvious methodology but, of course you'd be limited to a grand or two a week before that'd look suspect.

The problem is you're trying to explain things you clearly don't understand. There is no limit imposed on what Uber may pass on to drivers as the fare. The taximeter is irrelevant once the client waives his right to have the maximum fare permitted by law calculated by the taximeter.
There are only two types of taxi jobs. Private hire and public hire. The fare charged has no bearing on which is which. A public hire occurs when you are hired from a rank or hailed on the street. A private hire occurs when you are booked either privately or through any licensed dispatch operator.

Apps need to be regulated by NTA in compliance with it's statutory obligations. In particular, it needs to prevent market manipulation to facilitate fair competition. If you don't agree with what the men are asking for, don't turn up and it won't effect you except that you may have a busy afternoon on the day of the protest if it attracts a significant proportion of your colleagues/competitors... so it's a win-win for you.

You're welcome.
Back when I lived up above in Dublin I was stopped by a member of An Garda Siochana for using a bus lane while bringing the older not so young lad to school. He told me I would be summonsed for using the bus lane unlawfully as he didn't believe I was on hire. Short story long, a letter to the Inspector in Santry Garda Station resulted in a phone call during which said inspector explained that the member in question was on day release from Dublin Airport Garda Station and had been a little over ambitious in the conclusions he jumped to. He assured me that there was no law preventing me from carrying members of my family for reward and further assured me that no further action would be taken by the force or the member in question. In the spirit of cooperation I dropped my complaint against said member which extended not only to his ignorance of the law but also an attempt he made to question a minor without the consent of a parent/guardian.

The protesters are Taxi Drivers .They want the issue dealt with through the NTA .Ergo The Customer is UBER they seek taxi drivers to complete the job at a rate Less than the Legal Metered fare .Of course there is no upward limit they reward drivers with bonuses and other goodies like priority .You will note when or if you cover a Fixed fare .You are instructed to turn on your meter ,clearly the instruction to engage meter makes the Journey a taxi job .We cannot rely on not engaging the meter and inputting the offered reward .You post clever semantics but lack understanding .Are you one of the Organisers of this Protest ?
-
No. As I've already stated it's nothing to do with me and I won't be participating but I will withdraw my service for at least the duration of the protest in support. I post the legal position. IIRC the waiver scheme was introduced by NTA on foot of it's reading of contract law.
At the moment Uber pays drivers more than it charges riders and it also offers riders assurance that they will not be charged more than the metered fare. However, it is the first line of it's terms and conditions that ought to be of most concern to riders I.e. they are required to waive their right to have the fare calculated by the taximeter. Subsequent comfort guarantees and concessions are stated to be "notwithstanding".
-
Just for clarity, I have no problem with Uber offering any amount for any job, erm. As you stated it's simple enough men can either accept or reject any offer and may choose which firms they want to work for and which firms they don't want to work for.
My main concern is Uber et al manipulating the market to eradicate competition. NTA has a statutory obligation to promote competition so it must step in to prevent below cost selling being used as a means to monopolise the market. It should be mindful that Uber's market manipulation methodologies will evolve if and when it gains sufficient control of the market. The men protesting have called for proper regulation of licensed dispatch operators which is a perfectly reasonable demand IMO.
I appreciate that many men won't support the protest for various reasons and that is their right. Some drivers might find they can earn more by charging lower fares as their productivity is increased through reducing/eliminating dead mileage and downtime. Interestingly, SB reported that he made more money in his Checkers days charging rates lower than bus fares than he does now charging the maximum amount permitted by law as calculated by the taximeter... and that was without access to bus lanes. However, he wasn't paying extortionate rates of commission and that is key to identifying an obvious requirement to limit the amounts licensed dispatch operators may charge drivers through a maximum prices order.

As I've said already, if you give 'mates rates' to your friends, you're giving a discount. The question is where does one draw the line?
The tricky part would be banning below cost selling. Uber have 1 foot here and the other in the Netherlands. They could easily manipulate their accounts to keep doing what they're doing. Afterall, Ireland's economic success is mostly based on letting the American multinationals 'rest their money' in their Irish bank accounts so they pay less tax worldwide.
I'll just throw this in here for reference: (CNBC 2021) [USA] Uber and Lyft rides are more expensive than ever because of a driver shortage (https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/31/why-uber-and-lyft-rides-are-more-expensive-than-ever.html)
The cost of a ride from a ride-sharing app like Uber or Lyft increased 92% between January 2018 and July 2021, according to Rakuten Intelligence. Many riders have also noticed increased wait times for rides. The main reason is a shortage of drivers.
... But for those who are still relying on ride-sharing platforms to make a living, the companies are not offering enough. In fact, many drivers switched to food delivery, like Chad Polenz, creator of Chad The Gig Economist
... The driver shortage calls into question whether the ride-sharing business model is sustainable. Neither company has ever shown sustained profits, and instead have shown staggering losses compared with most other publicly traded companies. Uber lost $6.77 billion last year, and $8.51 billion in 2019, the last full year before the pandemic. Lyft lost $1.75 billion last year and $2.60 billion in 2019, although last quarter it was profitable for the first time on an adjusted EBITDA basis, which ignores costs like stock-based compensation and taxes.
Profitability was a problem for these companies even before the pandemic, when Uber and Lyft were rapidly growing. Back then, these ride-share companies were subsidizing the price of rides with promotions, discounts, and even just lowering the cost of rides to bring in new customers. So the capital raised by these companies, in part, went to making rides more affordable, and making sure drivers were happy with their compensation. Now that Lyft and Uber are public companies, they have to worry more about making a profit.
Ultimately, the apps are public companies who answer to their shareholders and to hell with the public good. The NTA would do well to look across the Atlantic for a history lesson. So-called competition might deliver lower prices for passengers for a few years but it will become uneconomical for drivers and quality standards will drop.
And then once the apps become the dominant price-makers, the NTA will lose control and prices will massively increase as apps strive to make their quarterly targets for their American shareholders.
One could even point out the public bus industry. In the NTA's race to the bottom, the bus companies have to import drivers from South Africa and run ad campaigns to get women to work part-time. The NTA are the price-makers and are increasing fares despite the Govt's wish to increase people using public transport.

Smart post watty ..... wat some seem to forget is that uber isnt here for taxis .... its here to replace them

There are a Few TAXi Apps .Gala and Tap A Taxi are two I know .What are Free Now and Uber and Bolt .Are they actually TAXI apps or a digital platform where people can book services like Food delivery hire a boat or scooter or city bike ? My contention is they are BOOKING Apps (Service Providers ) All charge VAT on the service they provide .I believe their business model is to spend big on Advertising internationally to build a brand where people will book their required service Food or Taxi with the Platform .Now The Booking Platform Free now/Uber /Bolt will sell on the transport contract in our case to Licenced Taxi drivers as you need to hold a PSV to carry passengers for reward in Ireland .If they could use Private motorists (rideshare ) like they do in the US they would do it .
So as Independent business Owners/operators we have multiple options .Work with the Booking platforms (Pay the ransom ) Work off the ranks /streets .Have private clients .Like I said a lot of the lads now vilifying the Booking platforms are the very same drivers who gave them hundreds of Millions in start up subsidies by not charging the Pick up Charge for Years or giving Hospitality back handers for years to help these booking Platforms build their brands and capture what use to be free to us taxi fares .The same people who sped past you to grab the next job to maintain their Ambassador or Gold /Silver or Bronze Status .Now they are getting fucked over by the beast they created bitten by their own Dog and as Corporal Clinger in Dads army says They Dont Like it Up EM " Yes I know it wasent Corporal Clinger.
Many a fella went to a Youth Club Disco looking for a dance 30 years later ended up with a Divorce .The same thing happened here Lads thought the Apps were here to look after them so they embraced them now they own your WORK and you gave it to them .
I would bet a few quid if anybody turns up to this thing most of the Cars like the ones who parked along the Side of the Park will be branded Free Now or UBER .The people most effected by the Apps shafting them are the very men who built them .
I wont be supporting this protest No agenda who is behind it ? What document are the hoping to hand in to NTA who will represent the roadblock .?
-
This protest will have a net negative impact i fear, easiest way to protest is to just turn off uber and freenow, use media to promote tap a taxi for people to use while the rip off apps are turned off, we get the double impact of hurting the apps while boosting tap a taxi. Unfortunately half of us are too stupid/greedy to do it

That was FreeNow's aim before they sold to Lyft. To be *the* transport app. You'd use their app to rent a bicycle to the bus stop, their app to get on the bus, then their app to get a taxi in town etc etc..

One ought to draw the line at a 15 mile radius from the GPO. The meter is a relatively new concept beyond that boundary and one very many clients passionately dislike. If one were to force the men outside of the big cities to charge the current maximum fare permitted by law as calculated by the Dublin centric taximeter a lot of those men and the firms they work for would lose a lot of work, forcing some out of business and others to commute in to the cities to compete for work where the clients are used to paying metered fares and, indeed, where most clients will have actually flagged down a taxi on the street or hired a taxi at a taxi stand so actually know how disgustingly low fares are when PUC and base fees aren't a factor. I done a local from the Omni rank up above in Santry the week before last... €7 it was... with queuing time, loading and unloading shopping time that's 20 minutes work... for a poxy €7 before expenses charging maximum fare permitted by law as calculated by the Dublin centric taximeter.... yet the same maximum fare permitted by law as calculated by the Dublin centric taximeter pays me €72 for a 32 minute run from Stamullen to DAP or €83 for a 33 minute run from Balbriggan to D1, both including run in, excluding commission and other expenses.
I guess in rural areas the majority of your clients are your friends and neighbours but what about firms like Roy's Ireland By Taxi - of which there are quite a few. Of course they will have some repeat clients and more through recommendations / word of mouth but, for the most part, they are serving clients with whom they have no personal relationship. Putting those firms out of business would, similarly, force those men into competing for work in the big cities.
In any event, it seems highly unlikely that NTA will introduce a minimum national fare at a level that would be counter productive or that it will abolish the national maximum rate in favour of returning to allowing local firms and local authorities set their own (metered) rates appropriate to local markets.
NTA can attach any conditions it deems appropriate to Dispatch Operator licences. The question, I guess, is whether the likes of Uber actually need a licence. They could argue that they are no different to WhatsApp which clearly can connect riders with licensed (or more commonly unlicensed as far as WhatsApp is concerned) drivers without holding any licence. However, Uber has proved to be keen on playing along with licensing authorities in other markets e.g. in the UK it is required to operate from within the jurisdictions within which it is licensed to facilitate audit and regulatory control. Of course, that is another question that ought to be being asked... what jurisdiction has NTA got in Amsterdam and when did it last audit Uber B.V., Amsterdam?

Isn't that where Uber et al have revolutionised the trade. You're no longer restricted to your patch, be that the patch within which you hold a licence to ply or stand for hire, the patch your traditional base serves or merely the patch you like working. With Uber you have a 26 county patch which will become a 32 county patch as soon as our law chuckys.
Whether you choose to increase your productivity by working beyond your patch just following the black line in counties with which you are not familiar or just use it to get you back to your patch, you are increasing your productivity. It's effectively taking what the hackney firms done in specialised areas prior to entry liberalisation and expending that to a national scale. As SB mentioned on another thread he was earning more driving folk around the northside suburbs for bus fare back in his Checkers days than he now earns in his fully licensed taxi charging the maximum amount permitted by law as calculated by the Dublin centric taximeter.
Of course, increasing your productivity and that of a significant minority of your colleagues/competitors effectively increases supply. Without getting too technical, what happens in a market when you increase supply is that the price equilibrium point of supply and demand shifts in a downward direction i.e. the point at which maximum aggregate fare income is achieved is at a lower fare than it was before you increased supply. I appreciate that's well beyond the scope of our discussions but it is nonetheless something that the big multinational firms will be well acquainted with.

There would be no Tap without the last protest so, who knows, this one (if supported by drivers) might deliver some other unexpected or unintended benefit. MMW astutely noted on another thread that it's primarily drivers who are forced to pay extortionate rates to rent their taxi plates who are covering the fixed fares for Uber. The new union behind this protest is advocating a level playing field so maybe that's an area NTA can look at... after all the market was supposedly deregulated back in 1999.
To be fair, the tremendous success story that is Tap has solved the problem of fixed fares up above in Dublin to some extent. I done a few hours up above in Dublin last Saturday afternoon and 78% of my work was for Tap hence I'd suggest there is very little need for any driver to work for any of the commercial firms as far as the big cities are concerned. It is also noteworthy that Tap has solved the problem of Free Now (in particular) charging huge surge fees as reported by a rock star and a TV personality. Tap drivers never charge more than the maximum amount permitted by law as calculated by the Dublin centric taximeter.

Whos going to the Protest ? Wont be going but wont be working .I see now on tinternet somebody asking Trinity College if they gave Free Now permission to use their image on an advert ..That will undoubtedly sort out the issue of 25% commission .
