Just heard that blue cabs are gone, they were the north sides premier taxi company a few years ago, Arrow cabs having a meeting this week, not looking good.
Update, Blue cabs still open, news was incorrect.
-
How will they get up the hill now ?
-
That's the first base to close in many years.
-
That's the first base to close in many years.
There were a few closed a couple of years ago, Apollo, shandon, b-line, rochestown, but yes, since the upturn most have held their own until now. Lots of drivers saying they earn more from mytaxi than from their base, and it’s difficult to justify paying both.
Don’t know how true it is, but I heard sun cabs are going full fare, halving their base fee and adding a pay per job system.
Also I still see a sign in yellow cabs advertising “no call out charge and no extras”.... how can any driver pay for that work?
-
I know Shandon cabs did close, but I think the others just merged with other cab companies,
but open to correction on that.
When I first started in this game in '09 there were lots of cabs with stickers splattered across
their passenger doors stating "No Extras". Those days have long since passed, maybe the day
drivers still need to offer incentives to attract punters, but the night time drivers don't !
-
Sky cabs
Tele cabs
Euro taxis
Ace taxis
BTown cabs
As was said above these prob merged with another company.

Some of those are gone 20 yrs... you could add in amber, metro, Joyce, Douglas etc to that era,
Yes, B-town were bought and relaunched as satellite, who also took over Ace and Dj
Sky closed and the drivers transferred to Apollo (a few went to Wilton), Apollo then closed and went into arrow, as did b-line and shandon, and now arrow are themselves struggling. Euro was a breakaway from Coop, and I think most of them went back there.
-
Euro wasn’t a breakaway from the Coop.
Came about when deregulation happened.
K Cabs nearly gone also.

Yeah, I heard k often only have one car working midweek nights ...
the next 6 months will see big changes
-
Think they don’t have someone on the base overnight.
If a driver wants a job go into the base and wait for the phone to ring.
Sur the owner is on mytaxi also.
-
The funny thing is, all the companies that are in trouble are the ones that charge flat meter, the companies charging full (or close to full) fares seem to be doing ok. Which is good to see, drivers no longer being screwed to pay a ton a week to cover hugely discounted fares. I really expected mytaxi to lose ground in cork when they introduced the €2 puc... and they did for a couple of weeks, but seem to be getting busier by the day again now.

Where was the old Douglas taxi base ?
Was it pre DJ ?
-
And yer man out in Pouladuff road is very nice to his drivers lately.

No, Dj were first, they opened in a bungalow in Douglas where Topaz is now.... Douglas only lasted 3 years, they were upstairs by the walkway into Douglas gaa, by the traffic lights near Apache pizza

They are getting a good deal, 20% off discount is discontinued, unlimited holidays with no fees, they are busy,
So yeah, drivers must be happy with him

Ya they are tipping away.
Even though a lot of their customers are using mytaxi.

Ironically, Satellite are also now using mytaxi to cover work they can’t get to, they only started this, this week
-
That’s a strange one.
You sure about that

100%. I wouldn’t post it if I wasn’t.
-
There's a few Dublin firms doing that.

Forward thinking... if you can’t get to them when they want you, someone else will.

Wow ! 'MyTaxi' seem to be winning the War !

That war was won when firms failed to respond properly 2 or 3 years ago, How many bases will be still there this time next year,? I can only name four that I’d bet on.
-
I believe Arrow cabs actually closed during the week.
Locks on doors anall.
Drivers had a meeting with Mick Quinn and he has decided to keep it going for another 3 months if he can.
-
Fair play to Mick.
-
Fair play to Mick.
One of the first hackney companies to operate on the south side of Cork.
In business over 35 years or more I’d say.
-
Drivers had a meeting with Mick Quinn and he has decided to keep it going for another 3 months if he can.
I heard the same from a good source, rumour purports that they have Thirty cars working
but I reckon it's closer to Twenty and Mick owns most of them 'out on lease'.

Couldn’t imagine them having more than 17 cars.
You would want over 30 cars to make it just about work.
-
Yeah, it’s hard to see how some of the tiny bases are viable, some have shrunk to tiny numbers, I’d say the likes of K and arrow have less than 30 cars, probably yellow too, not sure about north side companies, but you don’t see many glen Eire cars anymore , and star seem to be missing a few.
As for Vip, blackrock, I don’t know if they are still actual companies or just the odd car with the roof sign not updated.
-
VIP was never a real company, eventually sold on to Ace, then DJ, then Satelitte or something along those lines !
Blackrock was with Expert fer a while, I'm surprised that didn't work out fer them.
-

Yellow are struggling.
If k cabs and Arrow cabs go the Hacks will move out to Wilton.
They have around 39 cars
-
The figures themselves are easy enough to work out, take the working week as 168 hours,
that's paying a single base op about a Tenner an hour = 1,680Euro, add on the Lecky, Rent,
Phone costs, Heating, Up-keep and all the rest, brings it up close to 2,500 per week.
With 25 cars on your about breaking Even, IF they all pay ?
-
My local firm operates without a base most of the time. First parked driver answers the phone via his radio microphone, great system as you know who's collecting you, where he is and how long he'll be straight away. Ideal for a small firm and it'd be easy and virtually free to incorporate an app.

Done a mytaxi job from the CUH earlier on.
Elderly woman, thought it was strange she was using mytaxi.
She told me she rang using the free phone.
Sun cabs must be giving mytaxi work that they can’t cover.
-
Yeah, ties in with the talk that they are now full metered fare.

I’d say most places are paying over €10 ph, add on employers prsi, holiday pay, bank holidays, sick cover etc, wages alone are over 2k a week.
Rent, rates, insurance, telephones, licensing, accountants fees, electricity, etc.
Anything less than 30 cars is losing money.
-
2,500 or 3,000 ?
25 cars or 30 ?
We won't split hairs !
What amazes me is that none of them are Closing !

Pay peanuts get monkey work
-
With less than 30 cars they don't need a full-time base. Either follow the system used by G Cabs in the beautiful seaside resort town of Balbriggan (as described above) or, if multiple ranks are a necessity, farm it out to National or Xpert.

Are any bases offering just commission work or day fee in Cork or South Cork ? (For a hackney )
-
Na.
Money up front.
Prob 100.00 to 120.00 per week
-

He’s driving a Hackney though.

mytaxi uses hackneys.

mytaxi uses hackneys.
They use Limos,
Never heard or saw a Hack in mytaxi
-
They use both. Back in the Hail0 days one of our colleagues told me he got €25 or €50 or something like that for referring a hackney.

Ask around or ring a few of them, it's a buyers market these days.
