Title: Avensis drinking a lot of water.
Post by: Belker on February 03, 2018, 05:09:34 am
My 08 Avensis is drinking an awful lot of water these days,
about a liter every 4 hours, I know this is a very bad sign
especially as none of the water is being leaked on to the ground.
My mechanic can't see it till next Tuesday, anyone any ideas ?
Is it safe to drive ?
Or am I doing it more damage by driving it ?

Head gasket maybe?

Had a similar problem years ago with an avensis, top rad hose had a pin hole leak , Hard to see as the water spray was very fine and most likely was evaporating from the heat in the engine bay

I had the same problem.Must be cheap top hoses.

Belker have you dipped the oil to see if there is any sign of water in it?If the bottom of the dipstick is white your head gasket is gone. The water pump seals go on them as well. You would not see any water under the car when this happens unless you look under the car with the engine running.

Thanks fer replies lads, I'll try that dipstick test tomorrow.
I reckon it is head gasket and prob needs a new engine fer abo 2K !

If there is no sign of water on the dipstick drive the car until it reaches normal temp and then get out and look under the car with the engine running to see if there is any drips. If there is, it is probably the water pump.

Sadly there is a known fault with Avensis diesels where the head cracks. If this is the case with your car, do not spend 2,000 on a secondhand engine because you could possibly inherit the same fault with that engine.
Better to fill it up with coolant and bring it to your local Jap import dealer and trade it for a prius.

If the engine is gone again I'd scrap it.It's gonna need two NCTs a year soon..I was in a new Prius last night and compared to my old one it was like a proper luxury motor with fancy Led screens etc on the inside.Nice and quiet too.The money you save on juice Belker would pay for a new car.Hopefully it's just a rad leak though.

The new prius has to be the most ugliest yoke on the road apart from yourself mfh... I'd rather tout for work in a white sheet and pillow case in D15 than be seen anywhere next or near the gayest heap out there...

^^^^^^^It's just another boring taxi with stickers on the door once ya plate it up Tony.Any of the cars worth getting excited about are expensive to maintain and run.I hate the look of the car I drive now but it costs me nothing and doesn't break so I'll keep it around. It's starting to grow on me after 5 years.

Prestone have a head gasket repair (using repair lightly)on the market Ken...i know a guy who used it and his motor is still going, just follow the instructions to the letter on the bottle...there are other products aswell,
Open the oil filler cap and check for a milky coloured substance(oil and water),this is usually an indicator that the head gasket is gone.

I'm gonna stick it out with the old Avensis till 2022.2 if at all possible,
even though it's good till 2023.2 .
It will be on Double NCT/Suitability from this Oct onwards but I really
don't fancy the idea of adding a motorloan on to my billls.

I'm almost 3 years in to my 7 year plan to buy a new petrol Avensis in
2022.2 and leaving myself a years leeway fer any unexpected occurences.

I only did a short lucrative shift last night 1am to 4am because I'm
half-afraid of doing more damage to the car, but it was taking a liter
of water per hour fer the 3 hours.
Thankfully I did see some water dripping from under it, so hopefully
it's just a hose problem.

Again thanks fer all the replies  ::cheers

just a little leak you have there. you'd know all about it if it was serious because the exhaust would be belching plumes of smoke batmobile style.
why do you fancy a petrol avensis kenner.

Thanks DMG, Fingers crossed !

The Avensis I have always loved and today I am too old and ugly fer change,
I don't like change, I like the Status Quo. If it ain't broken, don't fix it !

As fer Petrol, I would actually prefer Diesel, but the Diesel engine is on the
'Hit-list' and has up coming bans in many European cities.
I don't wish to buy a Diesel cab with a 10 year licence only to find out a couple of years
later that it will be banned in another couple of years, long before the licence runs out.

I am fairly sure I read somewhere that Toyota will finish production of the Avensis in 2019.They have no plans to replace it with a mid priced saloon.Honda have dropped the Accord because they see no market for them in the future.

Ken if you go to 2022 you will be buying a hybrid of some sort.

By the the way I still think it is your water pump that is leaking.

Im with you on  the Diesel Issue .You would be pissed off it the Mothers of the Universe manage to get a Diesel Ban before you get full use .Im like you going on to two NCt a year but if I can hold out for another year or two then Hybrids will have come down in price .Toyota are the only ones with any track record and you have to pay a premium for that at the moment .I think its MFH who drives a Prius and he speaks highly of them so I will be following his recommendation going hybrid .

There a good car but if the whole battery/hybrid thing makes ya nervous a Petrol Corrolla would be a safer/Cheaper less efficient option.New Corrolla is bigger than the old Avensis.

Cheapest of the Hybrids new is about 27k with a lot of city driving probably need to replace the battery pack over its lifetime  3K? I dont do a huge amount of work 3 days a week so have the option of a 4 or 5 year old petrol which should work out at less than 3K a year to own which seems to be about the average cost of providing a car for the job .There are a lot of things we take into account reliability ,comfort running costs there really isint a one size fits all car for this job .Im a bit of a Hippy and like the idea of a Hybrid .You read about the damage Diesel fumes do .I wonder how fucked up our lungs are as we spend our working day no more than a meter away from an exhaust pipe in front of us and air conditioners pumping fumes into the car .

You got to factor it in its a huge one off cost if it goes wrong but 600k without renewal is impressive .

There's a small fan that sits in behind the interior trim panel behind the rear passenger seat (driver side) that gets blocked up with dust etc cos there's a vent at the side of the seat,it draws air to cool the battery but it's not on any service list from Toyota...but it's on Hals.

Belker have you dipped the oil to see if there is any sign of water in it?If the bottom of the dipstick is white your head gasket is gone. The water pump seals go on them as well. You would not see any water under the car when this happens unless you look under the car with the engine running.

I checked the dipstick and its all black oil all the way, still taking a liter of water an hour,
but it's booked in fer repair on Tuesday morning.

I'm not dead set on the Avensis, but it would be my car of choice,
if the Avensis is not available in 2022 then it gives me more scope
to look at other models like Passat, Superb, Corolla, Etc.
going hybrid wouldn't worry me in the least, but fer me 30K in 2022
plus a scrappage plan I will be expecting a good solid motor.
I have plenty of time to be making up me mind.

Im like you going on to two NCt a year but if I can hold out for another year or two then Hybrids will have come down in price .

The Double NCT/Suitability is a bit of a piss-off but a motorloan would be an even bigger piss-off,
as I do have the luxury of choice fer another 5 years I'll take the Double NCT and live happily
without the motorloan.
As our Frankie often said; "The meter runs at the same rate regardless of what your driving".

Toyota must be trying to fit oversized diesel engines into places they wouldn't normally go.I know a chap with a 2010 Avensis d cat diesel and to remove the Alternator one of the drive shafts have to be removed. On a petrol engine you'd reach it from the top.Probably a 15 minute job.No wonder Toyota wanna move away from the diesel.

Ed's not on the new series. Threw his toys outta the pram when they diluted the workshop element. Personally, I agree with his stance, it's the workshop bit I enjoy.

It's completely focussed on the American market now,i've no interest in merican muscle cars....and the price Brewer is paying for cars is ridiculous, paying 20-25k dollars and throwing another 10k in for parts/upgrades,

The workshop bit was always the most interesting,Ant is a bit too Essex boy for my liking....with a mouth full of gobstoppers!!
