A taxi driver from Dundalk presented to Balbriggan Garda Station in a dazed and confused state last week, with blood dripping from his neck and chin after being brutally assaulted by a passenger.
On the night of Monday, January 22, the driver picked up a single male in Skerries and agreed to take him to Balbriggan.
The first passenger was quickly joined by two other males known to him, who asked to share the taxi. Before the taxi made off for Balbriggan, a fourth man approached asking to share the vehicle. The fourth man was not known to any of the other passengers but they agreed to share the taxi fare with him.
When the taxi reached its destination on Hampton Street at around 1.45am on Tuesday morning, the original three passengers exited the vehicle but the fourth man stayed behind.
He suddenly launched into a vicious attack on the 48-year-old taxi driver from Dundalk, punching him in the face and puncturing his neck.
The taxi driver lost several teeth in the attack and sustained injuries to his nose and chin as well as a puncture wound to his neck. He was taken by ambulance to Beaumont Hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released.
Two of the taxi driver's teeth were subsequently found in a rear foot-well of his car.
Investigating gardaí are expected to take statements from the other passengers in the vehicle, this week. The taxi driver has so far, been unable to give a statement to gardaí so there is no description yet available of his attacker.
This was the latest in a spate of assaults on taxi drivers in Balbriggan in recent weeks although what sets this brutal attack apart from the others is that there was no evidence of a robbery taking place.

First report I've heard of drivers being attacked in Balbriggan, Tony. There were warnings from various sources about immigrants attacking drivers in the wild west - Clonee and Tyrelstown being mentioned. I don't believe the other three don't know the attacker in this case, the drinking classes in Balbriggan all know each other, at least in passing.

I've seen/read a few articles of drivers getting attacked in blackbriggan..... Maybe it was on Bebo or titter or somewhere like that

I don't use that anti-social media, if you come across relevant reports please post here. I know one off the local drivers had a runner who turned out to be mixed up with immigrants arrested in connection with the Clonee attacks but he wasn't attacked... the connection was made because he bothered to report the incident. I guess a lot of (if not most) runners go unreported.

That might explain this attack but there has been several other attacks on drivers in Balbriggan.

Have you details of the other attacks, Watty? The base controller could be a popular lady, I guess... if the what's application contribution is accurate. Drivers in rural areas tend to know the vast majority of their customers, it's not the same as driving up above in Dublin where we pick up perfect strangers as a matter of course.

I don't have any more details. But the newspaper article said attacks + robbery on the other drivers. This one was just an attack, a rather savage one. Plus the driver doesn't remember any details of his attacker who didn't rob him. Could be concussion, of course?

Granted, the topic probably did deserve a thread of it's own, but it was El Tonio from
BallyFookinFermot that posted it and to be fair, he ain't the sharpest tool in the shed !

Fer me that is not adding up at all, "Released from hospital" on the same night, but "Unable to give a statement to Gardai",
that makes no sense !
Also that he just happened to pick up a randomer who happened to be the last out of his cab and happened to be the spouse of the woman he was having an affair with seems a bit far-fetched.

Maybe he doesn't speak English very well, a lot of the Dundalk drivers that work Dublin are immigrants.

A lot of native Dundalkers can't speak english anyway!!
