With change rounding you'd get €1.40.... talking of which I've noticed that Lidl don't seem to understand change rounding. They invariably round the bill rather than the change. For example, yesterday my bill was €50.48 and the clerk asked me for €50.50, removing the option for me to pay the exact amount of legal tender required. Anyone other traders robbing the public in this manner?

It’s not your change that they round. It’s your bill too, so they were right to round up your bill

I haven't noticed the bill being rounded anywhere else, just the change where appropriate.

EuroSpar do it. Isn't it all the same. Bill rounded or change rounded

Swings+ etc. If it was €50.52 they would have accepted €50.50 as when you let the fuel pump go 2c over you are not charged. Seems a civilised arrangement. Maybe calculate to always make it in your favour. Who knows you might save 20c a week. There was talk of scrapping 1c and 2c coins.

I agree with you Stephen, I'm not worried about the few cent, but I don't want to be told that I owe something at the till which I actually don't owe !
If'n stores are Rounding, then all their products should be priced in 5 cent increments.

Taxi drivers are the worlds worst fer that, anytime I pull up to a pump after a taxi driver,
the pump always reads 30.02 or 40.02 !

By law you have to agree to change rounding. If I'm asked for €50.50 instead of €50.48 I don't know that my bill is €50.48 until I get the receipt. I should be asked for €50.48 and given €49.50 change if I tender a €100 note but I should have the option to tender €50.48 in full settlement of the debt.

I've noticed that An Post don't subscribe to change rounding at all, they still give out 1c and 2c coins in the change.

Yes Rats you are correct, sorry. They should ask you for the correct amount and then round the change.

Having researched the matter, legally you are correct. They are entitled to round the bill provided appropriate signage is in place. Presumably the customer has to then enquire as to whether that is the exact amount owing if he doesn't agree to "change" rounding.

I thought it was odd because Lidl is the only place I've noticed doing it that way. I'm pretty sure Tesco ask for what's owed and then round the change.

Far from solved. Just another irritation to bear, like walking into a bank to be greeted by a machine.
