Title: Sterling
Post by: dalymount on July 03, 2018, 03:15:43 pm
I never realized what fukking gangsters the banks were until this morning. I had 300 pounds sterling (northern Ireland sterling) and I went into the bank this morning to do a straight swap for english sterling. The fukkers wanted to charge me 20 euro for the privalage

UK bank or ROI bank?

Not sure how widely accepted NI Sterling is on the mainland these days. I have spent small amounts in large supermarkets and bars over the years but you never know if they're going to take it or not and, sometimes, it comes down to saying it's all you have. Never had a problem the other way round i.e. English Sterling seems to be generally accepted in NI.

Not legal tender so they can refuse it... obviously they can't give it out in change either.

Quote
What is classed as legal tender varies throughout the UK. In England and Wales, legal tender is Royal Mint coins and Bank of England notes. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, only Royal Mint coins are legal tender. Throughout the UK, there are some restrictions when using the lower value coins as legal tender. For example, 1p and 2p coins only count as legal tender for any amount up to 20p.

Hence, strange as it may seem, Scottish and Northern Irish issued banknotes are not legal tender anywhere, not even in Scotland or NI. They are classed as legal currency and, by that definition, "may" be accepted anywhere in the UK.

Have you changed the money yet and, if so, where and what did it cost?

The €20 the first shower wanted seems fucking crazy. I could understand a small fee, maybe a euro or two.

All's well that ends well, I guess. Sure they're one of the banks authorised to issue promissory notes in NI anyway.
