Title: taking care of taking care
Post by: john m on August 07, 2018, 04:48:43 pm
Hit the scales @21stone 10 at my heaviest .Off the Gargle one month not losing much weight though just broke 21 stone .Anyhoo went over to join the Gym what a scam you sign up to pay by the month but they advance you your annual fee then charge you 23% interest on the monthly balance .Ballyfermot Healthcenter if your over 55 you can get a passport and pay just 13 yoyo a month for Gym and Pool .Anyway did a fitness test and the lad stopped it when I was on the walker .He recons im already dead .Got talking to him and was honest I havent walked two miles in over 10 years .I go to work sit down all shift then park in the garden and walk about 10 yards to the door only exercise I get is going for a piss.Took down a deck I had in the Garden and laid some turf ,it nearly killed me I had to sit down just to catch me breath.I wonder how many drivers are honest enough with themselves to realize we are dangerously unfit and need to get exercising .

It gets easier John, although I never joined a gym Id cycle up to 150k a week and walk about 30k, it gets easier as you go along so keep it up.

If you have a smartphone, download a few podcasts lasting 30mins and 60mins.  And go walking. Start small and build up to 30mins and then 60mins.
RTE Documentary On One are good for the 60min ones --> https://www.rte.ie/radio1/doconone/ (https://www.rte.ie/radio1/doconone/)

Also, have a look at the 'couch to 5k' movement --> https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/couch-to-5k-week-by-week/ (https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/couch-to-5k-week-by-week/)
9 weeks and week 1 starts...
Quote
Week 1
For your 3 runs in week 1, you will begin with a brisk 5-minute walk, then alternate 1 minute of running and 1-and-a-half minutes of walking, for a total of 20 minutes.

i couldnt do 5 minutes at 7kph on the treadmill if I ran i would collapse ,frightning how unfit you can get sort of got a fright might start walking to the bookies Neilstown or Finches then work up to Penny Hill or the Arc or Waterfront then the big one walk into Clondalkin Village .I know it sounds silly but that might be the programme for the first few weeks .

John your right. motovation is the key to it,but like tony says it does get easy i do a 10 k walk every morning, but i suppose it can become additive to.if i miss a morning for some reason, i am kicking myself. but you have taken the first step in realizing you need to do this, that should be motovation enough.  sometimes its no harm to be scared of the consuqunces  if we DONT take nessesary steps to assress our physical health. best of luck John, and if you ever feel like walking, and your in the clontarf area, give us a shout

I'm probably in the same boat as you.  No harm in starting small and working up.

If I try walking, it f*cks up my shins and back but I don't get out of breath.  Too much belly fat and not enough muscle!  If/when I start, I'll do 10-15 mins until I get used to walking.  I won't be running/jogging for a long time!

Swapped smoking for vaping (e-cigs) a few weeks back so still getting used to that.

Swimming is the best excercise john.
It works every muscle and you won't feel as if you've just had a big workout since the water is constantly cooling your body.

@ John M, I'd go along with DMG on this, but take it very easy, I mean really, really easy.
There is no need to run, a decent diet + walking and swimming should suffice.

I'm not very over-weight at just over 14 stone, muchly helped by my eating disorder which means that I very seldom if ever get hungry.
But I am even more unfit than you, a shower/shave and toothbrush would have me out of breath, de Ryde would probably see me off !

@ Watty, if'n your new to the vape market, the only advice I would have fer you is to buy an expensive vape (about 90 Euro), all the cheap ones are shite and not worth a Fook and will piss you off to the extent that you will go back on the fags. IMO.

10 lbs in a month is standard John...why are you complaining? It takes time and a lot of patience.....swimming as I said is the recommended exercise. Walking will shift it too..........you need to realise it should take 1 yr to shift 5 stone and if you lose it quickly...you'll put it back on. Weight Watchers makes a fortune from repeat customers. Brother lost 9 stone in a yr with them and put 5 back on when he couldn't keep to their ludicrous eating plans....exercise and be patient.

Sitting here thinking will I stick on runners or shoes and bring the dog for a walk cant bring him for a swim as he and me dosent like the water .Runners or Shoes runners or shoes ?Fuck it a few eggs and rashers and toast and ill decide before lunch what ill do after lunch but definitely before dinner .Breaking that routine it harder than actually walking .

You lost 10 lbs so you have broken the routine. Dalymount's regime is by far the best and least damaging to the joints...10k a day is great exercise. You should try hitting that after about 6 months. Just walk 2 k a day or so for a while...never mind the rashers etc...keep the fuck away from beer and bread. Cycling is for people who are already reasonably fit as is the gym. Just stop thinking about it....walk 6 days a week for 2 ks and then build it up over time. Swimming doesn't harm the joints like cycling does and it gives lean sinewy muscle....you will be laughing in 6 months if you stick it.

+1 on that. Don’t buy a cheap VIP yoke, it’ll leak on you and piss you off. Get something like an eleaf or pico, and a tank to go on top of it.
It can turn into a hobbie

Not a bad bit of kit.
Cut down the cigarettes drastically in November 15, Been off the cigarettes since Feb 2016 and reduced nicotine gradually since then, until may 17 when TPD came into force I started using 0nic.
After a family bereavement last year I stop vaping altogether and haven’t looked back.

Only bad thing about the whole experience, I piled on about 10 kilos. But working on getting rid of that now. And I look at other smokers with disgust sometimes but still love the smell of a freshly lit cigarette

If your interested Johnny I have a gents bike (for the larger man) and a crosstrainer to get rid of at a very reasonable rate.
I was going to put them up on Adverts this weekend.

Some people need a shock.

Post your entire diet HERE for a week without cheating. If that isn't a motivator, nothing is.

More important than exercise is what you're eating, cut down on carbs such as bread, biscuits, cereals and eat a lot more healthy fats and oils such as avocado, nuts, and then up the vegetable intake you should notice the weight dropping off within a couple of weeks.

You'll hit the wall if you don't exercise....and walking suits obese people....power walking will become addictive. He'll be walking from Dutch Village to Blanch before long if he sticks it.

That looks good, but if'n your not happy with it, then upgrade rather than going back on the fags.
You can prob get a cheap stolen one second-hand on Ebay !
Best of Luck.  ::cheers

I'm not too sure that all that exercising counts El Tonio, Great that you do 150K per week on the bike mostly in the greater Dooblin area 'On the Sniff', Looking out fer potential fresh Chungwans to abduct, that dosen't count as exercising !
And the 30K walking per week to feed de Chungwan in her pit in the Dooblin mountains dosen't count as exercise either !!

Hit the nail on the head john....
It's hard to keep motivation....
I find this time o year me earnins go down
An I start gettin hint of the downers an anxiety an the exercise can suffer an the diet...... Some blokes are military minded an I have to admire their  steadfastness....
But I'm not one them.  I don't know how Tony does that miles and manages find time cycling walkin that ammount takes discipline ...... The gargle can be tempting but it's grease on a slide....
I'm single parent 3-4 days a week an sometimes that wear yu out.... Don't know how their ma manages.... Sumtimes it rumble in the jungle....

15 minutes is a start..... Know block who was 20 stone an after losin 5 stone in a year but he's out for hours everyday on his bike.... Doc told him he had couple year live.....
Suppose yu have to choose
Get busy livin or gett busy dyin
As andy dufresne said....
Sumtimes something or sumtin  comes along that gives us no choice but to fight and get up wen the bell rings
