Title: Revisiting My Childhood
Post by: Rat Catcher on August 23, 2018, 01:25:59 pm
Went for a pint up above in Dublin last night with a couple of colleagues/competitors so decided to have a swim this morning in the Northside SC pool. I was there a couple of times as a boy many many years ago (although I mostly swam in St. Paul's, Raheny) so, being the summer holidays anall I was expecting it to be packed with kids. Well, I was in for a pleasant surprise. I had the entire pool to myself for the princely sum of €4.50. An absolutely fantastic facility, clinically clean, friendly, courteous staff... I'll be back!

Jaysus, flashbacks to my childhood of swimming in that piss filled pool gulping down gallons of the water in my attempts to swim then onto Mannings bakery in the SC for chester cakes  lol

You'd be mad not to, practically a private pool on your doorstep. If we had one in the beautiful seaside resort town of Balbriggan or elsewhere in Fingal I'd be there three or four times a week. The sea is getting too cold for my aging bones... even at the height of this year's Indian summer.

Sept/October best for sea temp. Heats up slowly over the summer.

I guess that's closer to what I was expecting. The few times I was there as a boy it was hive of activity, packed with snotty nosed kids many of whom obviously there for a well overdue wash. Hard to rely on one visit as conclusive evidence but I guess the working classes are too busy working these days to bring (or bother sending) their kids to the "baths" or, perhaps more likely, are all members of private clubs with Gyms and Pools. I'm planning to go again next week, probably Tues or Wed evening and starting work from there - it happens to be on my cruising route so convenient enough in that respect.

Worth bearing in mind. Over the years I've only ever gone in "beach weather" and only then if the water is rated excellent.

Struggle - that kinda sums up how my actual swim went. I thought I'd have no bother clocking up ten or twelve lengths but I was outta breath after one or two. Yet another wake up call. I didn't have (or notice) the same struggle during the occasional swims I've had in the sea or in pools on holidays over the past few years, maybe it was the pressure of being the sole focus of the obligatory lifeguard! When the kids were younger (and we had a local pool in Gormanstown) I was obviously a lot fitter,. As I said to Mrs Catcher, I wouldn't have to "let" the kids win a race now!

In Cork fer me it was the Eglantine street baths which is now Angelsea street Garda station, we would be sent off with Ten pence, Four pence fer the bus in and Four pence out fer over Ten year olds and Two pence entry in to the baths.
But fer Under Ten years olds the bus fare was just Two pence, so the trick was to convince the conductor that you were under 10 or else 'Jack' the fare completely and then ya could get a bag of Tayto's in the corner shop on your way home.

Went back for a swim on my way to work last evening. Got there around 19:08 and once again had the entire pool to myself. But there's a catch! This is the last week of the summer schedule and with clubs/schools returning next week public hours will be significantly curtailed. Can't find the Autumn schedule online, probably not published yet... but it looks like I might have to find another pool if I'm going to continue with my plan to have a swim once a week, all part of my quest to get fit/lose weight.

Thanks, reasonably priced anyway. Closes a bit early (7pm most nights) but I guess I could have an early dinner one day a week. Being part of the Remedial clinic seems apt!

You wouldn't believe me if you saw me now but a looooong time ago, I got a full-time job as a lifeguard in a swimming pool in a regional town close to Dublin.  It was a public service/civil service job 'n all.

Anyways, when the travellers visited the town on their summer travels, they used to pay to come into the swimming pool.  Not for swimming.  They used to bring in their clothes and wash themselves and their clothes in the showers!

I never really liked public swimming pools because, well, the public use them...

I well believe it. As noted I was pleasantly surprised with NSC pool. Don't think I woulda gone in if I spotted any clapped out Hiace vans in the carpark. I was a competent swimmer myself many years ago, got the life saving badge among others, just around the corner from CRC in St. Pauls. Similarly, ifn you saw me swim now you wouldn't believe that!

I'm pretty determined to keep at it, doing my bit of exercise every day and watching the calories, still under 17 stone even after the holiday excesses so I reckon I'll hit my target of 15 stone by Christmas.

Should get yourself one of those fatbits. New one on the market, waterproof etc. Handy for keeping track of your exercise, records all exercise types automatically and tracks your heart rate, sleep quality .. even clocks up steps when youre driving or pedaling as I recently found out. Might even let ya know how bollixed your heart is if you study it enough.

Mrs. Catcher has one of those... it's not getting much by way of results but she was able to tell me we walked 6.67 miles on Sunday. I did have an app on my phone that counted steps and such like but it bored me... I did notice it clocking up steps while driving, too. I guess there's some data I can do without. My faulty glow plug on number 4 cylinder still annoys me, wouldn't have any idea that it's faulty without the OBDEleven (VAG specific) scanner I use, it doesn't show up with generic scanners.

I used to use the Myfitness Pal app synced to the Fatbit. Worked well to lose the weight but at the end of the day you have to get stuck in and take responsibility for your own gluttony. Some people want to lose a stone a week, 1 or 2 pound is a healthy rate pw tbh. The key is to try make all your own grub so you know what youre ating when youre using those apps.

If you want to get into good shape and feel good it's fairly easy, just cut out most carbs, eat more meat and animal fats and cut out 90% of all sugar. Within a couple of months you'll drop a load of weight, all sugar converts into fat in the body, all carbs convert into glucose/sugar which also converts into fat.

The whole fat causes heart disease thing has been proven to be a myth, eat mostly animal fats and meat with leafy veggies with a small amount of carbs and train a bit and you'll be ripped in no time.

I've had a few walk down that way over the last few months, for some of the specialist work on my Citroen,i'd leave it in with Noel(Dolphin) on Moat Ln,then go for a stroll, the last one i had brought me from Vernon Ave to Sutton Cross and back to Drumcondra(Abra...don't judge me) and back to Moat Ln....i'll admit it left a few blisters on my right foot!!
