Criminals head home from Britain to join spiralling gang feud
November 14 2018 2:30 AM
A number of Irish criminals based in the UK have returned to Ireland in recent days as a gangland feud in Drogheda continues to escalate.
The returning criminals are thought to have close links to Owen Maguire (34), who was shots six times at a halting site in July, and have returned to “reinforce” a gang associated with him.
Mr Maguire has remained in hospital since the attack four months ago. However, his associates are locked in a continuing feud with another gang thought to be behind the attack on Mr Maguire.
On Sunday night, a 22-year-old man with links to the Maguire faction was kidnapped, stripped and stabbed.
It is now feared tensions will continue to mount following the return of the individuals from the UK.
The feud has spiralled out of control in recent days, leading to the cancellation of all annual Garda leave in the Louth division with “an all hands on deck” approach to the crisis now being taken.
In the latest incident, a petrol bomb was thrown at a vacant house on the Rathmullen Road in the town at 8pm on Monday.
It is thought this attack was carried out by associates of the Maguire criminal gang.
There has been a huge increase in armed patrols in Drogheda, and the armed Regional Support Unit (RSU) is currently being deployed in the area on a 24-hour basis.
It can also be revealed that associates of Owen Maguire are understood to have offered €60,000 for the murder of their main rival in the bitter dispute, a 23-year-old drug dealer from the Moneymore estate. It was a car owned by this young criminal’s girlfriend which was targeted on Sunday afternoon, when a viable explosive device was placed in the exhaust pipe of the vehicle, leading to a major security alert.
Meanwhile, four of five men arrested late on Sunday in relation to the brutal kidnap and savage assault of a 22-year-old have been released without charge from Drogheda and Dundalk garda stations last night. A file will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
They include a teenager, three men aged in their 20s and a man in his 40s. A father and son are among the five being quizzed for false imprisonment and assault.
They blamed the victim, who is originally from Dundalk and has “loose links” to the Maguire faction, for causing an explosion in the troubled Moneymore estate at around 9pm on Sunday when a Renault Megane filled with gas cylinders was set alight. He was abducted shortly after by a group of men who have links to the anti-Maguire faction and brought to a nearby house where he was brutally tortured.
Armed gardaí saved the young man’s life when they stormed the house to find him stripped naked in a bath.
He was bleeding heavily after being stabbed more than half-a-dozen times in the face, neck and torso, and gardaí believe he was about to be murdered before they intervened. It’s understood a gun was placed in the victim’s mouth during the ordeal. The gun was not recovered. The victim remained in a stable condition in hospital last night.
Searches at the halting site where Owen Maguire was shot in July ended yesterday with a mechanical digger being used to try to find “stolen property, drugs and cash”. However, nothing of significance was recovered.
The explosion in gang violence on Sunday happened as the tit-for-tat feud escalated in recent days with six separate attacks taking place between Thursday night and Friday.
Those incidents included four petrol bomb attacks and an assault on a teenager with a hatchet in the town.
There have been dozens of incidents of criminal damage causing hundreds of thousands of euro of damage as well as a number of special Garda interventions that prevented murder since the feud kicked off more than four months ago.

Indeed, with no links to crime. We've come to expect it up above in Dublin. With shootings in Bray and now Leixlip, how long before the whole country is subject to mob rule?
It's all great fun 'till law abiding citizens are caught in the crossfire... and/or insurance premiums increase.

Gardaí investigating three suspicious incidents overnight in Drogheda

Gardaí are investigating three suspicious incidents overnight in Drogheda, Co Louth.
Emergency services were first made aware of a fire in a shed at Donore Road at approximately 8.45pm.
According to gardaí, the shed was "extensively damaged".
It is understood an accelerant was used in the incident.
Nobody was injured and investigations are ongoing.
Shortly afterwards, a suspected petrol bomb was thrown into the front living room of a house in The Drive Riverbank area.
The alarm was raised at approximately 10pm.
Two people were in the house at the time, but nobody was injured in the incident.
The fire was put out early and the damaged was limited to the front room.
Gardaí were then made aware of a car on fire at an address at Tredagh View, Marley's Lane at approximately 2. 15am this morning.
It is understood an accelerant was used in this incident.
It is not yet known if the incidents are connected to an ongoing feud in the Drogheda area.

Might be just some fuk tryin to offload some excess accelerant.

It seems Dublin gangsters are (getting) involved:

Two men arrested after 'ice box bomb destined for use in Drogheda feud' found
Gardai are tonight questioning two men after seizing a sophisticated explosive device they believe was destined for use in the vicious crime feud in Drogheda.
The device was discovered after a garda plainclothes patrol searched a van at Brews Hill in Navan in the early hours of Monday morning.
Two men in the van were arrested and an Army bomb disposal team was called in to defuse the device, which had been built into an ice box type container that had been wrapped in cellophane.
The container had been wired and primed, according to gardai.
One officer said last night: "It was ready to go and only needed a timing device. It was very much a viable device".
The officer added: "It was a great seizure by young eagle-eyed gardai, who were not happy about the behaviour of the men in the van".
Two detectives became suspicious of the occupants of the van shortly after midnight.
They radioed for support and then interviewed the occupants. During a search of the van, they found the bomb hidden in the rear of the vehicle.
The suspects were arrested under section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act and taken to Navan station for questioning.
Both of the men are from Dublin and one is regarded as a "serious criminal", who is well known to officers in the capital.
Officers believe the the van was to be driven to Drogheda where the device was for use by one of the feuding gangs.
An Army bomb disposal team arrived at Brews Hill at around 3.20am and a cordon was put in place while gardai evacuated nearby houses until the operation was completed.
The device was made safe and removed by the Army five hours later and the cordon was lifted.
The Army removed the bomb and it has since been handed over to the gardai for more detailed examination by ballistic experts in the Garda technical bureau.
The Army advised the public that if they encountered munition components or suspect items, they should maintain a safe distance and inform the Garda.
Gardai are expected to consult with the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to determine if either of the suspects should be charged and brought directly before a court.
Gardai in Dublin, Louth and Meath have been closely monitoring contacts between crime gangs in the capital and those suspected of involvement in the feud in Drogheda.

Watch the shocking moment a man is beaten in an attack which is believed to be part of an escalating gang feud in Co Louth.
The video shows a man, topless and barefoot, as his attacker assaults him in broad daylight.
The victim can be heard shouting: "Will ya cop on, will ya" as he takes the punches to his face and upper body.
The video is believed to have been taken days before a shooting where an innocent man was blasted in the leg as he was loading rubble into a skip.
Local Fine Gael TD Fergus O'Dowd previously said: "There's fear in the town, there's deep concern, we need and must have more gardai."

Man (29) hospitalised following stabbing in Co Louth

A 29-year-old man has been hospitalised with knife wounds after a stabbing in Drogheda last night.
The victim was attacked by up to four males in the Moneymore estate which has been at the centre of a violent feud in the town.
Gardaí were alerted to the scene near the local GAA pitch at around 10.30pm.
Members of the Regional Support Unit (RSU), who have been patrolling the area to prevent any further outbreaks of violence, also responded to the incident.
At this stage it is not believed the assault is directly linked to the ongoing feud in the town.
The victim, who is originally from Dundalk, was brought to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Investigations are ongoing but no arrests have yet been made.
Hours earlier an armed juvenile was arrested by local gardaí following a robbery at a local shop at around 7.30pm.
A masked male entered the store in the Aston Village area and threatened staff, before robbing a small sum of cash from the till.
Unarmed gardaí who were on patrol at the time responded and a foot chase ensured.
A 17-year-old suspect was arrested a shot distance away, and gardaí recovered a knife, ski-mask and a sum of cash.

'Petrol bomb' thrown into home while three slept
Conor Feehan
June 5 2019 2:30 AM
A house was rocked by a suspected petrol bomb yesterday as a woman and two teenagers slept inside.
A fire broke out at the home in the south of Drogheda, Co Louth, at around 2.15am.
The woman and teens were woken by a smoke alarm, which may have saved their lives.
A neighbour with a fire extinguisher helped stop the blaze from spreading.
Extensive damage was caused to the property by flames and smoke, but gardaí said no injuries were reported.
They are investigating the attack as part of an increasingly violent feud between drug gangs in the town.
Local sources said the occupants of the house are not involved in criminality.
However, gardaí fear it is related to the ongoing feud, which has seen shootings, firebombings and tit-for-tat reprisals for more than a year.
In a spate of similar attacks in recent months, the homes of innocent people have been shot at or torched.
Initial signs are that the front kitchen window of the house targeted yesterday was smashed before a petrol bomb was thrown in or a flammable liquid was poured in and ignited.
There was extensive damage to the kitchen, but the intervention of the neighbour helped to stop the flames from causing further damage.
The family dog, which was asleep in the kitchen, escaped unharmed.
Gardaí have intensified their activities in the town since gang member Owen Maguire (35) was discharged from Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital at the end of April.
He had been receiving treatment there after surviving a feud-related shooting outside his home last July which left him paralysed.
