A Dublin-based firefighter has been arrested and charged in relation to a massive drugs haul after a surveillance operation by elite gardai.

Tallaght man John Paul Gray (41) was remanded on bail after a special sitting of Bray District Court on Thursday night, following his arrest by the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (DOCB).

It has emerged that as well as being a firefighter, the suspect also works as a taxi driver.

Mr Gray’s work as a firefighter sees him stationed at Dublin’s Townsend Street Station – the headquarters of Dublin Fire Brigade.

He was granted bail on strict conditions – including signing on at his local garda station three times a week and surrendering his passport – and independent sureties were also required from his mother and partner.

Gardai had earlier announced details of their major search operation, which has also led to two other men being charged before the courts.

“As a result of an intelligence-led operation targeting an organised criminal group operating in the Dublin and Wicklow areas, a planned operation was carried out by the garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and local gardai,” officers revealed in a statement.

“A number of searches of residences were carried out in the Enniskerry, Tallaght and Ballymun areas on February 20, 2019.

“Cocaine and cannabis herb with a street value of approximately €250,000 (pending analysis) and approximately €20,000 in cash was seized.

“Three males aged 41, 37, and 28 were arrested.”

All have now been charged before the courts and are likely to face trial at the Circuit Criminal Court.

The Southsiders have cleverly manipulated this West Dublin myth to avoid being swamped by attention. When I was a nipper....................Talllaght and Clondalkin were southside...........Blanch was northside until Castleknock GAA club started up and Leo was caught drinking in the club bar.

I guess the "strict" bail conditions don't preclude him from driving his taxi, noting he's still shown as linked to the same on the TfI Driver Check application. I guess TTNH and ITDF will be making representations on his behalf when the trial commences.

Amazing how many taxi drivers are caught drug dealing really. The Gardai don't seem to give a fuck about the youths dealing openly on the streets up above in Dublin yet they keep catching taxi drivers... is it just coincidence that all the drivers they catch are Irish by accident of birth... surely there's a lot more drug dealers among immigrant drivers?

Maybe the DFB union reps might step aside and let the taxi unions reps do their thing....as they have form for it.

Probably just the weight of numbers.  Assuming 1% of 'us' is a bad guy.
(Numbers made up)  1% of 9,000 'Irish' drivers is 90 while 1% of 1,000 'immigrant drivers' is 10.
Therefore, you'd expect to see a ratio of 9:1 in the courts/newspapers...

In this case, it's probably not fair to call him a taxi driver.  He's mainly a firefighter who, in his spare time, (allegedly) deals drugs and drives a taxi.

Fire fighters get well paid.Even amongst his colleagues at the station he would be thought of as a hungry bollix.I was told the boss up in the Tallaght fire station issued a warning to the three taxi drivers they have not to put the roof sign on while at the station.
