GRANT aid to cover the cost of insurance for rural hackney drivers will be provided under a pilot scheme in a bid to boost the number of rural taxis.
The National Transport Authority (NTA) will roll out pilots in the coming months in 17 areas where there are currently no taxi or hackney services that will cover the cost of insurance for community or private services.
A recent clampdown on drink-driving and learner drivers driving unaccompanied has sparked intense debate about how best to provide transport across rural Ireland.
Take-up in a special rural Ireland hackney licence is extremely low with just 13 such licenses approved nationwide.
CEO of the NTA Anne Graham told an Oireachtas Transport Committee that the slow take-up is due to the high cost of insurance. The committee heard that the cost of insurance could be as high as €8,000 per year.
The pilot scheme would see the costs covered based on certain conditions which would allow the NTA to see that the service is being provided as envisaged, by checking bookings from the previous month.
Ms Graham said the scheme must be teased out to ensure that it does not undermine existing services and to allow the agency to better estimate the costs.
She said the initiative could go a long way toward meeting the travel demand in isolated communities.
However, Ms Graham said there is work underway to identify gaps in public transport across the State but said the NTA does not have a national database which shows what areas don’t have access to any public transport.
There is no timeline for the service to come online but it is a number of months away and a budget has not been outlined for the project to date.
The application process to apply for a rural hackney license will also be overhauled in a bid to encourage uptake.

Will they have their area village sticker on the roof?
Not that'll matter wit mytaxi providing the app....
Hate to say but the game is up.....
We fuked alrite

Hi Guys
Great news your licence fees will now be plowed back into the industry to subsidise your competition .
Love .Anne .
-
They chased the BoBo and handed over control .I warned yis on Roys WORKCAPTURE everything I said was right .If your under 50 get out or follow the Legends advise its a part time gig .With rural hacks taking the culshy work expect to see more rentals working the bigger cities .I remember one dickhead calling me out when I said dispatchers would have fleets of WATS and get a grant for every one .

Somebody is after getting a huge big fukin brown envelope johnny.... Into the cayman islands ide imagine....
Like Wat Cameron got off uber.........
Be careful Wat ya put up here now.... The Irish government ain't yur boss no more
-
The writing was in the review .Minister said he wanted ALL drivers aligned to a dispatcher and ALL taxies cashless .To achieve that he needs DISPATCHERS not taxies .Next move is to remove Diesels from Cities .I know at present there is a congestion in buslane survey being undertaken .Dep of Trans want to know if they restrict other users from bus lanes at peak times would that speed up the bus and increase useage .You wont read about that on the internet .The assessment is being done to achieve a cost based annalasis for the new buslanes .There is a question from a certain City Manager to ask if bus lanes are increased will it encourage more taxi trips and negate the improvement to service .
-
at least its not ride share. and i doubt it will be through an app.
-
at least its not ride share. and i doubt it will be through an app.
Wake the fuck up .If they subsidise rural hacks taxi drivers will apply and then rent out their taxi to some Indian,African or Paristani .to work dublin and compete with you .It will certaintly be through the app .Metaxi or some other app will be given the authority as perscribed in the legislation to recomend a driver .Who do you think is going to cover the discounted HSE work and pay commission .Not a taxi driver paying Full insurance costs .
-
i dont work in dublin. i work in a rural town, i wouldnt rent my taxi to some guy in dublin, you are far better off with a taxi than a hackney, i can get calls from customers or be hailed on the street or work the ranks.john you are way too pessimistic about these things, i remember reading an article in the paper a few years ago, some taxi driver in longford was worried the new local area hackney licence would put him out of business, Take-up in a special rural Ireland hackney licence is extremely low with just 13 such licenses approved nationwide.
-
there is no need for an app to be involved with this at all, these guys will be working local areas so will be known, have a few business cards made up and hand them out.
taxis were worried about local link buses as well, sure you will have a few hippies using the local link buses but i still get plenty of business and them hippies would have never got a taxi anyway, they will pay 1 euro for a short trip or walk.
-
You are missing the point compleatly .The State do not have the money to provide proper rural transport so they will provide the cheapest option .If they can get cheap hacks to do runs from the bus stop that stops on rthe main road but dosent run into town or get the localhacked up Hiace to pick up kids for school or old dolls for day care that is what they will do .This is a RURAL EMPLOYMENT SCHEME it is also a TOURISM SCHEME it is also a GET A DRUNK HOME SCHEME but what it really is is A VOTE WINNER .Plenty of farmers or dairymen would jump at this scheme especially if they can write off the costs against earnings .Dont be fooled into thinking this is about rural transport this is about rural intergration of services at the lowest cost to the state .The School Bus Fleet is in bits so is the ambulance fleet tourists cant get from the hotel to the town .How many unemployable locals do you think will give it a go sure if it dosent work whats the harm .Be carefull .

Your not at this long are you .What are the rules for engaging a Hack .?
-
@1990 Did you buy a WAT to enter this game ?
-
yes i bought a WAT, why?
you ring a hackney for a lift. why would an app be needed?
-
yes i bought a WAT, why?
you ring a hackney for a lift. why would an app be needed?
Hacks have to be prebooked Im not sure you can legally ring the car .So when your WAT is old and has to be replaced you have to replace it with another WAT probably no grant and if the Brits leave the EU probably not many imports .So will you pony up 30K for a new WAT or would you hack a partworn Scoda ?
-
yes you ring the hackney driver and ask him to collect you at 12 at the pub or collect me in 10 minutes etc.
i wont need a grant, a second hand WAT is not expensive, 12,000-14,000 will get you a good 4 or 5 year old WAT.
these kind of grants (WAT) don't last forever same as the insurance grant might not last forever.
-
I wouldnt be to certain about getting used WATS in future .Here is another thing for the clever man .Hack up a part worn Scoda get the government to part pay your SPSV insurance for 3 years then buy yourseld a WAT ring the insurers and tell them you have a full 3 year NCB .Government subsidising your future competition .
-
i have years left in my WAT, will be running it into the ground.
i doubt rural area hacks can say they have 3 years experience if only driving as a rural area hackney. sure i was talking to a guy who had the 2 years experience driving a taxi full time for a taxi company, he then went to get insurance in his own name and was told buy the insurers he needed the 2 years experience in his own name.

Correct but they will have SPSV insurance in your own name part paid for by the government out of your licence renewal fees .
-
i have seen a good few taxi drivers leave the job in the last few years, most of them because they got sick of it, not everyone is going to give taxi driving a go and fall in love with it, its an ok job but its not for everyone, most people would rather stick pins in their eyes than work all night listening to drunks talking $hite, threatening you, dropping curry chips all over your car, throwing up all over your back seat, hitting you, fighting with you over a euro or refusing to pay the fare at all.
-
So you still think that people are just going to go out at 11:30 Monday to Thursday to drive a few drunk people home for a few quid, and do the same on a Friday and Saturday, when they realize how detrimental it is to their mental health they won’t do it for very long, no matter how much the NTA pay for their insurance
-
Just off the phone .The Dep of Trans and DCC are monitoring bus lanes to gauge congestion at peak hours from other vehicles using them .There is under review allowing taxies and Municipal vehicles (bin Lorries )use of the lanes during peak time .3 taxies take up the same space as one bus .The taxies can transport 12 passengers while a bus can carry 96? The topic under review is to allocate an Express Bus lane status to some bus lanes that will restrict their use to Bus only during peak times .Taxies will be allowed to pick up or drop off only in these designated lanes but not travel .The thinking is if the bus lanes were faster more people would use them reducing the number of private vehicles on the road and provide extra space for taxies and bicycles .This survey is ongoing and the results are to be known before hundreds of millions are spent on new bus corridor's .There seems to be a realization that building bus lanes only encourages taxies to clog them up .
Now being the sort of rational cunt I am .If taxies are removed from the express bus lanes then a taxi has no real advantage in traffic so why get one especially if you can get a cheaper hack >anybody seeing a plan here .If you want to block up bus lanes at peak time encourage taxi drivers to work peak times .

Who says the hack is cheeper than a taxi
My taxi will set the price until they have dominance .I also heard that the UK based Go Bus requested a review of the bus lane usage before they agreed to bid for Dublin Bus routes .

Seriously considering whether or not to buy a new car..I do realize im fighting a lone loosing battle regarding dispatchers, but while I accept that the way things are going,it will become ether compulsory,or necessary to align myself,my hatred for being told what to do as a self employed person ,and bowing the knee to radio company bullys,is greater then my desire to carry on ,well I will go on for another while yet,and see how it pand out
-
Keep fighting.........what else is there?

Frankie once said its a part time gig .Get what you need out of it if you can .Im 57 and I would jump at a job with no work for small coin and taxi at the weekend .I was out visiting a friend on Tuesday ranks of cars at Christchurch and Clondalkin Villlage and about 30 cars on Heuston at 110c .WHAT FOR ? Think of any other industry where your licence fee is paid out to your competition with WAT grants and now subsidized insurance .
-
John its only a part time jig because drivers allowed that to happen,in the same way that people (taxi drivers) appear to be incapable of working on their own initiative, and need a feeling that they are employed by these radio companies.they have brought about a situation whereby drivers who DO want to work independently,no longer can.the days of independent drivers is over all because drivers could not work on their own,and will eventually run independent drivers out
-
To be fair Dalyer....ye can't just expect drivers to sit on ranks and wait for punters to pull their suitcases to the nearest one or business people heading to the airport to stand outside an office block in the hope a taxi drives by to get them there.....we're in the 21st century(minus Buck Rogers) and Ireland and particularly Dublin is a changed place(whether for good or bad?)...i might be taking you up wrong but the impression you give is that there shouldn't be taxi despatchers/apps at all and drivers should be left to their own devices to secure work?
-
You got it in one.if their were no dispatchers or apps of any kind do you seriously think this would stop people using taxis the ranks would be surplas to requirements .the drivers would be constantly working.
-
Oh...right so!!

My advice FWIW DM, buy the new car (Silver in colour as it hides the dirt best and the stickers are not so obvious), sign up with MyTaxi, go Ambassador. No one TELLS you what to do, you are offered jobs via the app on a take or leave basis. As an Ambassador (which half of this forum are) you get a 2 or 3 second advantage on instant hails, you also get 8 cent off per liter of fuel in Circle K, half price car washes and a 100Euro fuel voucher starting off. Korky talked me in to joining last year and I have never looked back, my usual working week back then was about 45 hours, today it is about 35 and fer the same dough

10400 Corpo Gaff bought and paid for .As Silver refers to it as a litter strewn area and him from the upmarket Estate of Kilmore West Coolock Dublin 5 .In case you dont know it thats the big Corpo Estate off the Oscar Traynor Road .
-
I wouldn't buy new, DM. I picked my shitebox up for 12 large, if it lasts four years it owes me nothing. I wouldn't go ambassador either. As a non ambassador working for mytaxi with no priority I paid the guts of €150 freight for a 39 hour week a few weeks ago. Imagine what an ambassador with priority would have paid, particularly the ones that cover the "hospitality" jobs with the €2/job surcharge on commission.

Rat I'm not an ambassador either in me 2007 Avensis shitebox, but if an when I have to change its worth considering.
More Freight charge means more Take Home Lolly
-
Rat .firstly I do not know what an ambassador is in the context ofof taxi driving ? Secondly the pointpeople I was making was ,there are no circumstances in which I would EVER join a dispatcher, but I do acknowledge that because of a lot of drivers inability to work on their own initiative, they might bring about a situation where it becomes compulsory to align with a company.in those circumstances,I would be forced to leave the industry, because my hatred for dispatchers is greater then my desire to remain within the industry.if that situation became a reality whereby you HAD to join one,I would be down 20 k on a car that would never be a taxi

An ambassador is a driver who works for mytaxi and covers his car with stickers advertising for new (immigrant) drivers and promoting the firm's P2P/Scooter/eBike/etc objectives as well as it's current use of clapped out shiteboxes masquerading as limousines and hackneys to cover taxi fares.
-
Every second taxi.
-
Are you one rat ?
-
No... and, as I was saying, my freight for a 39 hour week was the guts of a ton and a half... imagine what it would have been if I was an ambassador or if I had priority or if I covered "hospitality" jobs with the €2/job surcharge on commission. Back when I worked for C2k the freight was €80/week for as many hours as I wanted to work and you didn't do a quarter of the kilometreage on run-ins. mytaxi is great for the part-time scum and the immigrants but it's the full-time professionals that need the job to feed their families anall that are paying through the nose. As the immigrant on mytaxi's latest wireless advertisement noted, us Irish drivers are very generous.

I will go New next time, at 53 and a half years old and after being through about nearly 20 used cars in my lifetime I have never had a New car, so I'm gonna spoil myself next time around !
As fer Ambassador, you don't pay any more freight than anyone else, you just see the job offers a few seconds before the regular scum, my usual commission is about 65Euro, never anything like 150 !
-

2 or 3 second advantage on instant hails, 8 cent off per liter, (the Gardai only get 4 cent off !) and half price car washes + they pay you a Hundred Euro to sticker up. In my book it's a No-Brainer !
And Yes, they will sticker up a 07.

Using Philosophy and a birra very forward thinking, that is One way of looking at it. Another way of looking at it, is that Ambassador drivers make the same coin as everyone else but work about Ten hours less per week. Personally I go with option Two.
-
If you're only paying €65/week freight as an ambassador you're either being screwed or you work less than 13 hours per week, Ken.

Did I read Rats that you paid 150 bucks last week.
And your a bottom feeding scum.

Non ambassador cars doing 90-100 jobs a week in cork.
Don’t know what sort of hours they are doing though.

They should get a life
Everyone’s situation is different Dalymount.
People have mortgages to pay and college fees.
Granted a lot of taxi drivers live in corpo gaffs and pay very little rent a week so they can work less hours in the week.
Are you a married man yourself with a mortgage ?
-
If you're only paying €65/week freight as an ambassador you're either being screwed or you work less than 13 hours per week, Ken.
Emails sent.
I paid 85 last week as I actually did a 40 hour week, even got a Gold star !
Usually I hang around the Silver mark and pay a bit less on a lazy 30 hour week.
I'm not much interested in MyTaxi work between Midnight and 4am which is my usual working time unless it is on my doorstep.
I'm finding a lot of cancellations and no-shows during those hours.
-
Married man or not,(which I am ) I physicality would not be able to do anything the amount of hours some drivers claim to do.my average working week consist of 20/24 hours a week
-
Personally I couldn’t survive on those hours every week.
Maybe it’s because taxi turnover in Dublin is a lot greater than Cork.
As you can see from my previous post at 4.43am I was starting work at that time.
-
Well to be honest what you said about everyones needs being different is absolutely right.I guess im just very lucky that I dont have to do those ridiculous hours some, lads do.I do the hours, and make the money I need to.I have found though, its not necessarily about working hard, its more about working smart.I have done a personal study of a number if months, and identified times, and ranks which I use.I have found this to be very beneficial insofar as getting the kind of work I like. I only use about 3/4 certain ranks, and at times you would not expect to see many takis on them.
-
Why are ya paying college fees Deboy? I thought it was a smart thing to do for your kids to get a part-time job and pay their way through college?Show them the value of money etc..
Bloke I used to work with ended up taxi driving too.But he works at least double the hours I do..has a newer motor and a slightly nicer gaff but he looks like death warmed up every time I see him.He looks like a pensioner and he's only in his 50s.All that extra work has to take it's toll on the body.Even when tradesmen get older they slow down and cut back on the hours.
-
To be honest didn’t mind paying the fees for them, wasn’t only me but wifey also.
One just finished her masters last year.
Cost 12k for one year and working up in Dublin now.
Other child finished her degree a few years and has a nice job now.
Suppose we invested in their education and it has paid off for them.
And anyway I would go off me game if I was doing 20 hours a week.

It's a lot of extra pressure all the same.Fair play at least you like it. I hope they put you in one of them 5-star nursing homes with a jacuzzi and a sauna.

I know of plenty of taxi drivers going around in 40k plus cars and wondering how the fook they can afford it.
You then drop off a fare in some shitty council estate and you see the taxi in a driveway.
The reason they have it is because they don’t have a mortgage and will depend on the state to house them at a very low rent for life.
While I would invest in bricks and mortar and education.
No way would a bank give me 40 grand for a car.
-
Round where I am...........mostly cars younger than 3 or 4 yrs old............Down the road in private housing Templeogue..........mostly cars older than 3 or 4 yrs old..........

Ugly birds have high sexual expectations and it's difficult to maintain a stalker when they look for a kiss. Fat birds are the best.......they can always lose weight and you can tell them they have when the mood takes you.

You must learn Jack to learn the system .People living in Corpo Gaffs pay a differential rent based on their earnings ,a lot of renters are paying more than the would for a mortgage .Most farmers who own farms worth millions dont pay college fees they use proper tax planning .Investing in property is well and good but to whos benifit .You live in the gaff until you die then the kids sell it and spend the equity on new cars holidays or whatever think of all the effort that went in to paying for the gaff all the worry most of it not necessary .Same goes for work earn 70K as a PAYE worker after tax USC and PRSI you might see 35K do a bit of casual taxi driving earn half that pocket about 25K no stress kids if they want qualify for subsidised college fees probably medical cards and Susi Grants .Difference between smart and Educated ,Smart learns the game educated only learns the rules dosent necesserily understand them .

We were over the limit for SUSI grants and as you are well aware they are no grants for a Masters.
-
No, and there should never be. Anyone going post-grad should have to fund it themselves. The fees back in the 80's stopped me going...the grant system was fucked as it was designed for millionaire farmers in Kildare and Meath. Although, I'm sure there's still a Tax covenant break for those paying fees?
-
Th kids being born today will be in college until they're 40 just to get a job cleaning up after the robots.I'm glad I dropped out of college.
-
John M is right though..........smart people learn the game......educated people learn the rules..........those inbetween are the one spaying for everything...the PAYE sector.

Isn't it amazing ? You often hear people say they are the type that has to be doing something, that they could not sitbe around all day doing nothing.I on rhe other hand are the complete opposite.I could willingly sit around all.day watching repeats of fools and horses, steptoe andthe son,and faulty towers.I could do it at night also
-

There are plenty of grants just a matter of looking .A lot of small grants from local credit unions and local busnisses are sometimes available its just a matter of research .
-
You're not getting any value out of the stickers then. 40 hours would cost an ambassador at least €200 up above in Dublin.

I don’t understand your post John M.
Do you mean sending out begging letters to fund college education for ones kids.

I’m trying to put a face on John and he comes across as a man that’s over 30 stone in weight.
Fairly fond of the sauce and can’t get up and go to work.
“Work in the bed, sleep on the floor”
A lazy fook in other words.
-
Ah...John is harmless enough...apart from the weight,the gambling,the gargle,the boxroom in the corpo gaff,driving a wanked out shiteheap(non exec)....it's all good!!

You're not getting any value out of the stickers then. 40 hours would cost an ambassador at least €200 up above in Dublin.
I get what I want from them which is more frequent work at the quiet times, the stickers don't bother me in the least, the majority of my work is done in the dark hours, and after the first few days you don't even notice the stickers anymore, the same as most drivers don't notice the door decal's anymore..
-

Are you saying ambassador cars are doing 2k a week for 40 hours.
50 bucks an hour.
-
Jeez I would hae thought that not only would there be no charge at all by a dispatcher for fukking up your car with stickers all over it,but they also would pay you adequate compensation for it as well.after all when you go to trade it in,the stickers will provably take half the paint work with it when they have to come off, thereby reducing your trade in value even further .Ebbs has loads of drivers with the same thing
-
I cant believe they actually have the nerve to charge you freight
-
The young Ross O'Carroll-Kelly types wearing Abercrombie and Fitch hoodies and Ralph Lauren boxers don't get a cent for advertising their products either.
-
€200 freight would amount to c.€1,666.67 takings, JM. They couldn't be far off that. My freight, as a non ambassador without priority and without covering any Airport or "hospitality" jobs, is never below €3/hour and I generally don't pick up south of Collins Avenue or west of Ballymun Road so I'm not maximising takings by any means. A good few years ago Hail0 told us that it's best drivers paid €240/week freight... the economy has improved since then and the firm's market penetration has increased.
-

Do you think they should give out the app work fer Free DM ?
If they did who would pay the staff's wages, the IT mans wages, the rent on Mount street and the Cork depot, the Lecky, Etc ?

....... when you go to trade it in,the stickers will provably take half the paint work with it when they have to come off, thereby reducing your trade in value even further .......
My 08 Joe has nearly half a million on the clock already and still 4 years left on the licence, today it's value is scrap and in 3 years time when I trade up it will still be scrap.
