Elderly Dubliners are “living in fear” as thugs continue to terrorise communities with fireworks.

A local TD has called for immediate action after multiple people have been attacked by explosives including a new born baby who narrowly escaped being hurt.

In Palmerstown a vulnerable resident got the fright of their life when an explosive device was allegedly fired through their letterbox last week.

Sinn Fein TD Mark Ward TD blasted: “You only have to take a walk through parts of Dublin at night and you can witness the very visible misuse of fireworks in our communities.

“There is constant barrage of noise and flashing lights making our communities seem in a state of lawlessness.

“I know of elderly residents who are living in fear and afraid to leave their home. Shopkeepers and local businesses are fearful for their staff and customers because of fireworks aimed at them or into their premises.”

The deputy for Dublin Mid-West and former Mayor of South Dublin said that bus routes being curtailed have forced people to walk through areas where thugs then target them with fireworks.

He added: “During yesterday’s debate the Minister gave a lengthy response about the legislation and that is strong enough to deal with the issue.  If legislation is indeed strong enough then it is a lack of Garda resources that is the problem.

“Operation Tombola is a Garda operation that is set up to deal with the misuse of fireworks in the lead up to Halloween every year.

“Yesterday the Minister informed me that this operation did not begin this year until September 4 despite the very visible misuse of fireworks in our communities since mid-July.”

Deputy Ward also said that there need to be more “proactive responses, or this situation will just get worse year on year”.

He added that the number of community gardai in Dublin was down 55% from from 508 in 2010 to 278 in July 2020.

He said: “Customers in parts of Clondalkin and Lucan are afraid to use their local shops and dog walkers won’t walk their dogs because of the distress that fireworks causes them and their pets."

Instances of fireworks and bangers being set off have risen sharply across Dublin in recent weeks.

In one horrible incident, yobs set a firework alight before putting it through an elderly resident's letterbox, while in another disgusting attack, a banger was also hurled at a young mum as she wheeled her newborn baby.

A battery and a firework were arrested.

One was charged, the other was let off.
